  1. So we can conclude that while here, you lived wholly like a Thai?

No cheese or wine? No single malts or cream cheese? No Doritos? No rib-eyes? No bacon and sausage for breakfast? No tacos or burritos? All of which are still cheaper in the States.

Living "frugally" can be quite a yawn inducing existence.

I understand your sentiments, but me, I'm not interested in "getting by." I'd rather work hard and play hard. I've got five years here non-stop myself, and can't wait to go back, both to work at a very nice salary, and to eat, eat, eat.

    It's all relevant.

  2. You paint a shitty picture. If she's educated , travelled and speaks English the success level will be higher although a bigger cosmopolitan city is better. My wife is from Chiang Mai and we live in Toronto so Thai food is abundent and she is seen as a Canadian. Alot of it to be honest depends on your situation. If you live in a shitty small apartment and are just getting by and she thinks she is good to sit at home and watch Thai Soaps all day it will be over quick. If she has no ambition to work or contribute not only will you be Pissed but she will be bored. This is what seems to be the problem with most of these scenarios. You need to sponsor her . Then it's a waiting game of approx 6 months. My wife and I have been together 7 years and married 5. It took me 2 years to really get to know her to determine if she would be able to live in Canada. Even then the first winter was pretty rough and the homesickness was pretty bad for almost 2 years. Once you get passed that it's good. She has a good job making about 30,000 baht every 2 weeks now and I don't see her ever wanting to leave . If she does work be prepared for her thinking her money is hers but your money is for both of you. That's just the way it is and she will send alot of hers home to help her family which is ok by me. Good Luck .

  3. You are 100 percent bang on. People who haven't been that low and made it back can never begin to understand.

Surely that's not him in the picture, just before he jumped
I have been very low some times and managed to pull myself out of it but I believe that severe depression, if you get that low, no one can help u, u just want out. My thoughts only btw.

  4. I had a Bidirectional Endoscopy done at CM RAM about 3 years ago and it was 16,500 all in. It was done by DR WOSSAMBUT name could be wrong but it was something like that. Woke up felt like nothing happened , watched the video and got in depth analysis from the DR. Not a bad experience. Probably cheaper somewhere else but I didnt care to look around .

  5. It was ok 15 years ago.

What do you mean 'ok'... ;) Best place in town, and the only venue with an actual dance floor (at the time), not just wall-to-wall tables and chairs!

Yeah your right it was pretty cool back then . I was in my mid twenties back then and pretty new to Thailand. I staggered out of there more than a few times at 200am back then. Or was it 100am closing back then I cant remember ?

  6. Gentleman,

Wife and I will be back in CM in a few weeks and we are looking to tear down two small houses ( actually shacks ) on her property and just clear the land and drop some dirt to build it up. Was wondering if anybody knows a company or person(s) who could do that and approx cost to basically demolish and take it all away..... Any ideas appreciated. We live in Canada now and will only be in CM for 5 weeks. Ive attached a few pics so you can see what I am dealing with. Thanks Again,

    Mike

  7. Hey all,

Been a regular site visitor for years and have been to Thailand maybe 20 times over last 10 years. I recently lived in Chiang Mai for about two years but am back in Toronto. I will be going back to marry my fiance later in the year and am trying to get everything lined up as what needs to be done. From what I have read and understand I will go there and have a small ceremony with some family and then to govt office to be wed. I have a ton of paperwork that I have downloaded from immigration Canada Website. I will then proceed to Bangkok to have documents translated and be wed in Canadian Embassy in Bangkok and do whatever esle is necessary. I understand she will need to do police checks and medical and bring her house book and all that stuff. I have alot of questions but I will just start with a few for now. Can I do anything in Chiang Mai before going to Bangkok to speed up the process? i.e. her criminal check or doctor physical or do these things need to be done where specified by Canadian Embassy? Translation of documents? Is it a big deal and expensive or are places a dime a dozen and you can just bargain? How many documents need to be translated? I know that her paperwork is sent to Canadian High commision and my stuff is brought home and done in Toronto but it takes 3 weeks for things to be processed and received and then the waiting game kicks in....I was also interested in how a pre-nump would work if the document is made by my lawyer here and signed in Thailand before we wed is it considered valid. My fiance has a decent job working in hotel management and although her job is good and she owns some land she doesnt have any substantial assets to be granted a tourist visa to come to Canada and thats why we are going this route. We arent to concerned about her waiting a year because she is doing her last year for her BA in business admin so even if visa is granted we will wait until she earns her degree. On another note sadly both her parents passed away in seperate car accidents when she was young and has little family so she said a dowry is not required but she does have an 87 year old Grandma who is alone and has offered to sell us a nice adjacent lot to her land on a golf course for only 100,000 baht. I figure I will give a dowry to her Grandma although she is unaware but I have no clue how much to give without insulting anybody. She has never been married and no kids...She is a great girl and beleive me after spending time in Thailand for years and being in the so called scene there I know whats going on. I have taken Thai language courses and am conversational in Thai.....Anyway Im just wondering how the best way is to tackle all this and get it done right as im having knee surgery in a few months and will be off work for about 6-8 weeks...So in that time I am gonig over to get it all done and wanto make sure I do everythng right....Any help would be appreciated...espec from a Canuck who has been through the process......thanks alot...Mike
