  1. Hi all

A year or so ago I saw a shop in Pantip Plaza selling a home security system that used sensors in window frames that would set off an alarm when the windows are opened. Now that I'm ready to buy one, I returned a couple of days ago to find the shop closed down.

Does anyone out there know of anywhere I could get hold of such a system or have any other recommendations for home security/alarms? (no dogs or geese please!)

    Thanks in advance everyone.

  2. I went for a drive at about 1.30 am this morning and parked up to enjoy the night time view with a friend of mine. To our surprise, there was a man sat all alone on the floor in the dark playing the guitar. We stood for, I guess, almost an hour enjoying the music and the moment. I didn't say thanks to him as we left for fear of breaking the mood. So, if the man in question is a TV member, on behalf of my friend and I - 'Thank you!'.

  3. I've sampled John's food since he started with the 'Bagel Cafe' which used to be on the soi behind John's place. I've always been impressed with the taste, quantity and value for money of his food - authentic or not.

I'm certainly no expert on Mexican food and neither are the majority of my friends, but the consensus is that of all the restaurants proclaiming to serve Mexican food, Salsa Kitchen is the best with Diablo's a close second. If what some of the more experienced Mexican food eaters are saying about Miguel's being the closest thing to authentic, then I'm glad I missed out on it back home!

  4. Went there a couple of days ago for the first time. Impressed for the price. Tee areas were ok (better than Hand Dong which isn't saying much), greens passable but the fairways were a bit dodgy to say the least. Turned up at about 2pm and walked straight on.

Hang Dong is in the process of re-sodding their tee boxes. 3 were still roped off as off last week. At least 3 more are to be done next and they are making an effort at course maintenance, more than I can say about that absolute pile of crap Lanna Sports Center.

That's good news - thanks for the update.

I've never played Lanna - is it really that bad?

  6. Like all nations, the Thai education system is, in the foremost, dedicated to imbuing children with love of king and country, and the necessary tools to fit into the Thai cultural melange. Just as the USA was the center of the universe for me as a child, the same holds true in Thailand through Matayom.

This is a positive, and is the primary reason Thailand "check's all the right boxes" in tourism and retirement. There is something to say for this overlooked political asset. The Thai disinclination at becoming embroiled in First World mischief-making is a blessing-in-disguise.

One need only to look to Britain and the U.S. for proof of this supposition. One person's view of progress is an anathema to another.

This may be true for most schools in the US where they still, as I've been told, strangely pledge allegiance to the flag every day, but it certainly wasn't the case where I went to school in England. At the majority of government schools, pratom and mattayom students are taught through a microphone, told to sit & listen and are discouraged from questioning authority or, god forbid, displaying any unconventional thought. It certainly is a positive for the rich and powerful who run the country who want a populace that is easily brainwashed. For the benefit of the country, the Thai education system needs a major overhaul to say the least.

  7. A question for the golfers in Chiang Mai:

How do I go about getting an 'official' golf handicap? Do I need to join a club and hand in x number of completed scorecards or can I do it at a municipal course?

I know I could just estimate it myself based on the last few rounds, but I was wondering how to get an official one.

    Fore!!!

  8. I'm currently tethering my iPhone to my Mac via Bluetooth at home so that I can download torrents (as the condo Internet service blocks all torrent sites). Right now I'm getting just under 3 MB per second download and 1 MB per second upload speeds. I'm paying True 599Baht per month for unlimited 3G Internet usage, 200 minutes of free calls, 300 free SMS & 50 free MMS. Skype works fine, so I'm enjoying the free calls to friends & family back home.

  9. A great big THANK YOU is herewith forwarded to Leung Scrubber from staff and especially the children from The Rena Green Memorial Childrens Home.

I am assured by those in charge that your Sony Stereo System will be put to the best of use.

.... and thank you ' eek ' for making the suggestion.

Photo of some of the important beings at this home... It brought, and will continue to bring smiles from those who it is all about.

You are more than welcome, as are the kids at the childrens' home. Many thanks to The PunPun for getting it to a good home.

PS. Less of the 'leung' please - I don't feel like one yet wink.gif (even though I have six nephews & nieces back in Blighty) whistling.gif

  10. To the OP: I've been buying protein on eBay for the past few years, most of which has been shipped from the UK & US. I've only ever had one package stopped by customs out of, I guess, about 20. As one other reply said, it's best to get it sent by regular mail (ie: not DHL or UPS). The best price I got was 50 GBP for 4 kilos of USN Syntha6 protein (about 700 baht per kilo) including postage.

Hawkup2000 - What brand of protein is it that you can get 20 kilos for 18,000 baht? I've bought Thai brand 100% whey protein for 1000 Baht per kilo, but the quality is not that good at all when compared with stuff from the UK/US.

BIIR - What brands to you import from the US?
