  1. Regardless. the thing about ringing bells for three minutes every fifteen minutes? What kind of sadism is that? I don't give a rat's ass about this murderer, but to not let the inmates sleep through the night is a form of torture. The guards don't have walkie talkies to check in? Why ring bells? There is only one reason: to harass the prisoners. That's not the idea of prison. It's rehabilitation. That will have long-term physical and psychological effects on the prisoners.

It really is stupid and inhumane. I can hardly believe they do this all over Thailand. Some people are heavy sleepers, but some people are quite light sleepers. The latter will develop severe problems.

  2. Thanks for your replies, folks.

What I found odd was that I have never created a contacts list, in my Yahoo mail account ......and a the few people I know who got spammed were people I very rarely send emails to.

Why or how the virus did this, I'll never know.

  3. ALL my passwords....for EVERYTHING ?

I also just downloaded and scanned with Microsoft Security Essentials, but it detected nothing.

Also used Advanced System Care, which does a virus scan while it's doing it's other stuff but doesn't tell you what it's found....just repairs it.

  4. My Yahoo mail has been compromised. A couple of friends received blank emails with a link (which led to a work at home scam).

Previously I have had a handful of these from other people, and as soon as I saw only a link, I deleted the email as it's obviously spam, but I was never sure how their computers or email accounts were compromised.

This time, I even received one myself, in my second email account.....sent from my first email account. And upon opening the primary account, I saw MAILER DAEMON messages due to 4 emails being returned. And my Yahoo account had been changed from Classic view to the "new Yahoo".

So it looks like some program got right into my account......perhaps a keylogger ?

This concerns me as I sometimes view my bank account from my computer, but a scan with AVG revealed nothing, a scan with Malwarebytes revealed "Pup.forceinstaller" (which I had once before and which was quarantined by Malwarebytes), and nothing else.

The odd thing is that (apart from myself), the other people who I saw in the message headers receiving the spam, were people I had not emailed for quite some time. One was a person I only emailed two or three times.

Can anyone shed some light on this, please ?

  5. Could someone please suggest some software to help my friend catch a thief ? He has a webcam (which he can disguise on a high shelf) and a 5 metre long USB cable, and wants to install a program on his PC hard drive which he can turn on and record the scene in his room for up to an hour at a time...... perhaps two hours max. It does not have to be all day, and it does not need to be motion-activated. He wants to use only the computer (with XP) and webcam he currently has.

  6. Ok.....this brings me to my next point.....Air Asia seem to purposely mislead people about luggage weight. As far as I know, the luggage prices are cumulative. For instance, the cost of 30kg is 920 + 1150 + 1425 + 1950.

    From that website:

    Check-In Baggage (Pre-book) :

    International (up to 15kg)

    THB 920

    International (up to 20kg)

    THB 1150

    International (up to 25kg)

    THB 1425

    International (up to 30kg)

    THB 1920

    International (up to 35kg)

    THB 2425

    International (up to 40kg)

    THB 2850

    Check-In Baggage (Airport counter)

International (up to 15kg) THB 1500

  7. I want to upgrade my weight allowance on an international Air Asia flight. Online it will be 1400 baht to upgrade from 20kg to 25kg.

Does anyone know how much price difference there will be if I have to do it at the airport instead ? I'm not sure how much weight I will actually be carrying when I finally get to the airport. (And put all the heavy things into my cabin bag whistling.gif )

  8. I wouldn't recomment Scoot at all. I flew out of the Gold Coast, Australia, and the flight was delayed by 6 hours, making it a very long day.

People were frantically trying to re-book their connecting flights in Singapore, and all we got was an apology. Though after complaining bitterly that I had missed my connecting flight, I was offered a $50 voucher towards a Scoot flight.... to be utilised by the end of the year. blink.png

I think the problem is that they use old planes that were previously used by Singapore Airlines, so they're more likely to have technical problems causing delays.

  9. I've done a search of the forum but can't find any actual prices. Does anyone know the price of dialysis in Bangkok, per session ? Preferably in a government hospital....

One of my friends is coming to visit for a little while and needs it twice a week. He doesn't have a lot of money though.

  10. You can buy grilled bananas on the streets in Thailand, but I always have a good look at the stall before buying. Sometimes there are flies buzzing around, and they could have just been sitting on doggy-doo in the street.

Indoor markets have them too, and there are a couple nearby where I indulge. One place gives you a palm sugar sauce to dip them in, and the other gives you a coconut milk sauce. Very tasty.

  11. I had travel insurance for this flight only ; not the first one which caused me to be late. I do not have travel insurance generally.

My point is that only $90 is for the flight. The other money was being held in lieu for:

    Passenger Security Service Charge 8.00

    Aviation Levy 2.20

    Passenger Service Charge 7.80

    Service Fees (including taxes) 31.00

    Insurance Paid SGD 7.50

As this money is being held in lieu, shouldn't it be refunded to me ?

  12. Recently my flight from Australia with Scoot Air was 6 hours late, so I missed my connection in Singapore. I had left a 3 hour gap, but missed my Tiger Air flight to BKK.

Of course Tiger kept my money and I had to buy another ticket. This irritates me, as the breakdown was not for the flight only:

    Total Price SGD 146.50

    Fare 90.00

    Passenger Security Service Charge 8.00

    Aviation Levy 2.20

    Passenger Service Charge 7.80

    Service Fees (including taxes) 31.00

    Insurance Paid SGD 7.50

Should they be able to keep the money for the various other things ? I hate the way big companies like this walk over the little guy...

  13. My thoughts on the additional information that you have given is that let your wife put pressure on her sister for a contribution from their side also.

Maybe the answer is that medical insurance may not be the best option (or as mca points out, maybe not an option) and that have the operation conducted in a Government Hospital might be an OK option with the upgrade to a private room after the procedure has been completed.

There is no operation due. This is just trying to avoid the sometimes extreme expense of possible future hospital stays.

Thanks for your input, David and others. I had forgotten that in over 70s it is difficult to get insurance.

I'll talk to the sister (or better still, her husband ! )

Personally I'd recommend stepping back a bit on this, other than providing the overall framework and of course being the source of funds, let her family take the lead in planning.

And yes....I might take a step back.

  14. Thankyou, MCA ! Finally, after two pages....a post giving the correct response to this situation. This is exactly what I have learned to do in Thailand, not to turn away and refuse to deal with the offending person. In Thailand, a calm response....not a reaction....is best. And that is the correct response.

  15. Actually, my wife's sister just married another Westerner. I know him a little. She is my wife's only other sibling with a good job. However as the parents' hospital cover is currently provided by virtue of her being a government teacher, and they are losing this because she is coming to live with me in Australia, he may not be too keen to front up with money for health insurance. His wife has however been sending money every month, and this will no doubt continue when she too moves to Australia later this year.

What I am wondering is what level of care / support government hospitals in Thailand provide. I can't let her parents be at the mercy of a public hospital (which would probably send them home to die of cancer as they have with two penniless relatives already ), but at the same time, I will be on a lowish wage and desperately trying to save money in Australia, so I don't want to buy private health cover which may be expensive.

Perhaps I should, as two people just suggested, ask my wife to research and find a health fund giving the same level of care.

  16. My wife is a government-employed teacher, and because of this her parents are entitled to free medical care in any government-run hospital. These hospitals give a reasonably good standard of care. Her father is over 70, her mother approaching it, and both are in good health. However when she moves o/s permanently to be with me, she is quitting her job, so mum and dad will need some kind of health insurance.

Can anyone make a suggestion regarding this, please ? I'm not sure about the various levels / standards of health care in Thailand, but in the West, private care is the best, and public is the worst. Where does the government system fit in, in Thailand ?
