  1. I have been prescribed Dermacombin cream but now I am staying in another area and it has expired, I have not been able to find it. The tube of cream was very small and hasn't lasted long although it relieved my symptoms successfully. Instead I have tried some other creams but they do not work for me and so therefore I am specifically asking where to find Dermacombin in Bangkok or nearby, or a cream that is 100% identical in ingredients (listed below). The creams I've tried are Phoebus Cream, Lamisil and Urea.

The problem is a fungal yeast infection on the tip of my wotsit and when I try those alternative creams, it just does not help. Phoebus Cream burns instead, and the inflamation and awful lack-of-feeling returns. Lamisil is soothing but has no beneficial effect.

Dernacombin contains the following - Nystatin 100,000 u, Neomycin Sulfate 2.5 mg, Gramicidin .25 mg, Triamcinolone Acetonide 1 mg

It seems to be just those specific ingredients that clears my particular case of yeast infection. I've had this problem for three years since living here and I've only just managed to find a doctor who's successfully diagnosed it.

Hope someone can help, because it's been ruining my life until I started using this cream a few days ago. Thanks.

  2. If you intend to concentrate on your writing and devote your attention to your work, the last thing you would want is the inconvenience and disruption of performing visa runs. They would also be a drain on finances, in your circumstances. Living in Thailand can be expensive and one needs cash in reserve for unforeseen problems. It is often plagued with them.

I don't mean to sound unhelpful, because you say you love it here, and I understand that (or I did), but have you considered cheaper parts of Europe? You could stay without a visa and the whole affair would just be a lot less stressful for you.

Personally I would prefer sitting down writing, overlooking a clean European landscape with fresh air and maybe a picturesque coastline than a grotty backstreet in some dusty, dry and arid Thai town, with the continual interruptions of barking dogs, deafening loud music and screaming trucks and motorbikes rushing past. But each to his, or her, own.

The other thing, is that in Europe you can do what you want legally and can relax, whereas in Thailand many things are obstructive and require you to circumvent the rules. That's just the way it is here and foreigners are very much outsiders. Best of luck - wish I was in your shoes and could choose all over again.

  3. Sorry I can't get into the site it's Access Restricted.

Edit: Lomatopo's list seems pretty comprehensive, there must be a location near you.

Thanks very much indeed to both of you, Lomatopo and PattayaParent, particularly for editing that long list! Yes, I've seen the Mailbox-Etc. logo in loads of places before, but I didn't realise they provided that service. They'll be fine, I'm sure. Thanks again!

  4. I think OP wants his mail forwarded as well

Then I think the place in Asoke does that as it's used by businesses.

But I can't remember the name or the building it's in, Silver Place or something like that? On the left heading away from Sukhumvit.

No, I do not need the mail forwarding. I just want to be able to collect it myself.

There is a helpful list here, beneath the map showing Robinson's, but frankly I don't know where to start... http://www.farangfri...sons-16487.aspx

I do not want a PO Box number, but want an address. Perhaps, PattayaParent, the place on Asoke is listed on the above - would you mind looking to see if anything rings any bells? Thanks.

  5. Does anyone know if there is a mailbox service I can use in Bangkok, for delivery of local mail when I am living outside Thailand? Preferably not an address that says PO Box, but a proper address?

I do not know anyone to whom I can have mail addressed, in case that may be a suggestion. Thanks.

  6. I have lived here for a little more than 5 years now. For me the rot set in about 2 years ago.Living in Phuket you get the all worst of Thailand all in one place. I just can no longer live in a country where corruption is the norm and not the exception. As a foreigner living i Thailand, I feel very much like a second class citizen, we no rights here. I understand a little bit of Thai now and it is quite shocking to overhear Thais talking about you in a derogatory manner when they think that you don't know the lingo. LOS my ass. What do you show when you smile? YOUR TEETH! I will not renew my contract here in the next couple of months. I've had enough! There is more to life than making money, which seems to be the number on priority here, regardless of how it's done.

I'm always sorry to read something like this because moving away is a life-changing decision and things must be quite untenable to cause someone to have a change of heart. I also have been here for a similar amount of time as you have. I have certainly had ups and downs. For me, I think the Thais are very different to people from my own culture and perhaps not all Westerners can accept them, the way they are. I think it's better to stay away from tourist areas. I do not think they are all bad.

Although I should say that on a recent visit to Phuket, I did get rather fed up on arrival at the airport and waiting for a taxi. It is full of scams. Then on the way to the hotel, the police stopped our van for bribe money. It was depressing and I got the impression that Phuket is not like other parts of Thailand.

    I wish you luck, pmg.

  7. after all, he was a Neurologist not an Urologist. I made my own way to the Urology department for fear that I might be conducted to Maternity.

Is Bumrungrad all that it cracks itself up to be and value for money? Not in my dozen or so experiences there. I only go there to consult with somebody I like very much on a personal level and have total professional respect for who will write private prescriptions to save me being ripped off by the in-house pharmacy.

I had a similar situation to what you say. The representative making the booking for me insisted that I needed a urologist, even though I said that I had a problem with feeling in certain areas. I had done a lot of reading up beforehand and knew about the test that can be done, a neurology specialism. I just couldn't get her to make the booking so in the end I canceled it and went along in person to see a general doctor first. I got the visit to the neurologist through him but the language difficulty was a problem and he didn't know about the tests that I had read about on the medical web sites. I gave up in the end and went back home to get proper treatment.

Actually I have never been able to get the two doctors I've seen at Bumrungrad to take my problem seriously. I always felt that they just wanted to get me out of the consulting room as quickly as possible. The pain I had was put down to imagination.

I feel that they are all about "show" and not about leading the way in medical care.

  8. I do not want a foot scrub, but someone who can remove hard skin professionally. I realise there aren't many (if any) small chiropody specialists here who aren't part of a hospital, but would appreciate it if anyone has experience of someone in Bangkok. I have heard that foot massage shops *can* do this, but I'm not looking for anecdotal information - I'm hoping there is a shop of some kind which carries out chiropody properly.

The only chiropodist I've found here is Doctor Cherdpong at Samitivej, but I'm not willing to pay all the hospital fees and nurse's fees etc. for what is essentially a simple removal of hard skin from feet from time to time. They treat it like a medical condition, when in the developed world, it's just a normal part of looking after one's body.

Each time I visited Samitivej some years ago, they tried to sell me special shoes or have special insoles fitted into my shoes. This was just because every so often I like to have hard skin removed LOL.

    Thanks.

  9. I'm writing this partly because I have read the story of the other poster who's lent a sum of money to his wife's family to start a business, and the money has been blown. Partly also, I'm asking for a bit of advice, and the reason I'm asking for advice is because my girlfriend and her parents won't seem to ask me for financial help. However I'm not sure about her older siblings and what might happen in the future, especially if we marry.

Should I be harsh and always expect the girl to pay for her parents?

  10. My girlfriend had her motorbike stolen a couple of weeks ago. Lots of others in the town have been taken also, on the same night, so I understand.

I do not want to buy her a new one, but does anyone know what I should pay for (say) a four-year-old Honda Wave or similar?

Or if anyone wants to sell a tidy one, I'd be happy to look? It's just to keep her mobile until we both move away from the area. Thanks.

  11. I once heard there was a good skin hospital in Bangkok that operated as a research hospital, or similar. I don't recall where it was but I know that it was not private and not just a straightforward hospital. There was something unusual in so far as it was set up either for research or as a government dept.

The person I was speaking to had been there to have treatment after tatoo removal that had gone wrong. He said they were excellent - much better than the private hospitals and that charges were low. I'm looking to find the place but can't recall the details. Can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance.

P.S. I'm adding this after changing my search methods(!). I've found the web site of the Institute of Dermatology (www.inderm.go.th) and it might be the hospital I was thinking of. Perhaps someone has experience of using it.

  12. I occasionally go to the Andaman club for a couple of nights but the price is no longer as affordable as it was. They also do not reply to any e-mails, so I'm rather fed up with them. I have heard in past that someone stayed on the boat and just came back to Thailand on the same trip. If this is true, how would one pay the boat fee? I ask because when I've been across to the island, the boat and immigration fee is paid inside the office there at the end of the journey. No fees have ever been paid on the Thai side.

I should also say, I am not talking about a trip to Kaw Thung/Victoria Point, I mean the Andaman Club Pier, which is not near the Multi-Purpose Port. I do not like the idea of going through the multi-purpose port. It sounds awful.

  13. Anyway, an estate on the road to the park has 150tw with new english kind of style country house for 9 million.

I know the place you refer to. They look great. But after a few years they'll look quite grotty I expect, like all the other places in such an unforgiving climate.

  14. is not a problem for me, in fact its one of the attractions.
Yes, I understand what you mean.  Actually I do not want to live on a development full of other foreigners, but at the same time I do find it helpful to be able to contact other foreigners when help or advice is needed.

I have lived around Thai people for a few years and they've been so-so but... well... best not say any more!

Incidentally, can you give any information about where those properties were, RGS?  Many thanks.

  15. I have been spending some time in Pak Chong recently and have considered moving there permanently if I could find a western-standard property.

The reason I like it is mainly because of the mountains and scenery - it's more attractive than around Bangkok.

Does anyone have any experience of living in this area? The thing that puts me off a little, is that there seems to be no expat focus unlike some of the other places I have visited, like Hua Hin and Bangkok. Is this the case?

Also, the properties that I have seen are very poor standard basic Thai-style. The architecture of the buildings and quality of the buildings is terrible, so I'm hoping someone will well me there are properties available (hopefully new ones), built to a better standard, at least approaching that which we expect in the West. I'd just like a smallish bungalow in a rural location really. Thanks.
