  1. 1. FYI - Just for everyone's info., I read another article that described the metal rod as a common tool used to pull the metal door down in front of a business at closing time. Having read that I realized that is what I saw. At the time I did not see the hook on the end because it was in motion most of the time but it most certainly had one.

    2. It's obvious some people don't read existing comments and just post ill-informed comments on an article. Oh well.

    3. The article said the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday. It most certainly did not. It was around 9:30 or so Sunday night. The article also said "2 Thai bouncers". there were 3. They were very tolerant and the foreigner threw many punches before one of the bouncers went and got the weapon. As several people have pointed out, there should be a better way to handle drunks than with a metal rod. Agreed. Tasers? Aikido training? Any other ideas?

  2. @blitzfix - thanks for the firsthand report - I doubt that it will sway the haters but their minds were made up long before they logged in today. When 3 Thais cant deal with a single Westerner - assuming he isnt Dolph Lundgren - without resorting to weapons perhaps they need to ask themselves if this is really the industry for them, but from your report it would appear that the Polish man was the instigator. Not really sure who in their right mind would fight to get back into a club where they could potentially corner him and really do some damage - one can only assume that he had another target in mind and these guys got in the way.

I dont have a lot of experience in go-gos, but I've seen some complete idiots who seem to be under the illusion that anything goes. I keep my hands to myself and my eyes on my bill wherever I go in Pattaya but I cant say the same for everyone else here.

I was impressed (and a bit surprised) at how tolerant the bouncers were. The guy just wouldn't quit. What could the bouncers have done? Pepper spray? Tasers?

The way it turned out makes me feel like the guy got what he deserved. Now, had he lost an eye in the conflict, I might feel a bit different. The big gash was a couple of inches above his right eye. It could have been a lot worse for him.

  3. Saw this guy a couple of weeks ago. He was Hilarious! Twists the words to some songs to fit the local environment. Also did some great sing-alongs. Is he only there Sunday nights? I gotta work Monday mornings!

  4. I bought a Sierra Wireless USB dongle with and iMobile SIM card for 2300 Baht and it is VERY FAST - 7.3 Mbps!!! HOWEVER --- It is very expensive to use. The cheapest iMobile plan gives you 6 Gig of data for 700 Baht. IMO NOT WORTH IT!

I would be curious to know if anyone else out there has a more cost effective USB dongle solution. How fast? At what price?? I live on Sukumvit Soi 22. Cheers!

  5. Thanks for that. Seems like the USB dongle from pantip is the way to go for me ! Which brand/model of dongle did you get ?

Good question! It says "EDGE Modem". No brand name. I've attached a picture of it. Just used it today. Works great! As has been said many times before, EDGE is not fast, but it is usable. Here in Bangkok I get "5 bars" everytime I use it. Outside of Bangkok I've been in areas where I get only 2 or 3 bars but even then I can do what I need to on the net. I am very curious to know if a "better" name-brand dongle would get a stronger signal but this one has worked well enough that I haven't bothered spending the money on another (except the 3G one I wasted my money on. Oh well... Satisfied my curiosity.).

If anyone else out there has experience with these things please join the conversation. Cheers!

  6. Several months ago I bought a generic USB (dongle) EDGE modem from Pantip and it works great. However, I highly recommend that you take your laptop (assuming that's what you're using) with you and have them set it up for you. The first one I bought didn't work. Took it back. The guy tried another one (different model), didn't work. Third one worked great! Happened to be the cheapest one too, around 1000 baht with 12-Call SIM card included. 30 hours of internet for 100 baht good for 30 days. Top-up with cards from 7-11. I've since set this up on several more computers without a hitch. Easy self-loading software. Coverage is good anywhere you can get a phone signal. I've used it in taxis and on the sky train with no problems.

About a month ago I bought a Sierra Wireless 3G USB dongle with an iMobile sim for 2300 Baht. 7.2 Mbps and it is FAST!!! Coverage in Bagkok is good, spotty in surrounding provinces. Although fast, it's expensive. 100 baht only gets you 100 megabytes of data transferred. iMobile doesn't provide internet access by the hour. Their best "sign-up" package only gets you 6 gig of data for 700 baht. Definitely not worth it for me. Again I highly recommend taking your laptop and having them set it up. The 3G dongle is a lot more involved. The guy set it up on my laptop with no problem and showed me how to do it. When I got home I tried to set it up on a desktop and couldn't. Took the desktop to him and it took him nearly an hour to do it. And this is guy that has set up hundreds of these things. You have been warned. Have since been able to set it up myself on several other computers but I don't use it much due to the cost. Will soon look into a more cost effective SIM. If anyone has any suggestions please reply.

    Cheers

  7. Reviving a rotting thread, not to

open a new one on the same topic -

any updates as of todays availablity -

    brand, setbacks, pricing...?

to be used in the Kantaralak area...

The great news is that prices are down. I bought a cheap (1200 Baht including AIS NetSim card) generic Chinese Edge Modem to use in a remote location where phone signals are usually bad (unless the wind is blowing in the right direction). It works very well. Maintains a signal better than any phones we use in the area. Speed isn't great but very usable. It's like using a 56K modem with a strong signal. Slow but MUCH better than nothing. Also use as a backup when at the apt. in Bangkok if the local wireless signal is down. In Bangkok where the signal is strong the avg. speed about quadruples.

The name-brand edge modems are more expensive (around 2500 Baht) and I'm curious to know if the signal would be much better. Anyone have any experience with both? I'd like to try one but I'm so happy with this cheap one that I don't want to bother.

Also, AIS gives you 30 hours of net time for 99 Baht good for 30 days.

The only drawback to the cheap edge modems is that the original one I bought didn't work. I took it back and the guy said, "Oh, you just have to disable your firewall to use it". I said, "No, I'm not gonna that." We tried a different model (even cheaper) in my netbook and it worked straight away. Been happy ever since. So the lesson is, if you have a laptop, take it with you and make sure the thing works before you buy it.
