  1. My personal opinion is that there are already too many supermarkets and convenience stores in Udon Thani. It seems that this is the most popular type of business that people seem to want to open, maybe because it's relatively easy. Just buy a few boxes of food etc, put a sign up outside and hey presto your ready for business.

However I may be wrong, if your girlfriends land is in a good location with no other stores around then it may be good idea. Don't be surprised in the future if other people follow suit and copy your idea. Then before you know it your street will be full of mini supermarkets all competing for business.

Udon Thani has a large selection of supermarkets, there is one Tesco Lotus, Big C, Tops supermarket, Mackro, Top World and 1,000's of 7-11's, not to mentions the millions of privalty owned mini stores. So bear in mind that there is so much competition.

Good luck anyway and let us know how things go.

Try this website for more info on Udon www.udonmap.com

  2. Udon Thani has an interesting museum on Phosi road behind Nong Prajak lake, here you will find information all about Udon Thani province.

Nong Prajak lake is nice to walk around in the evenings and you will also find some really nice restaurants around the lake.

Korean BBQ's are very popular in Udon now, you can get a decent size meal for 59bt per person. MC is probably the best place to try, you will find it on the Prajak road leading away from the train station.

Center Point night market is worth a look if you like shopping, there are also some cheap restaurants around this area. Center Point is next to the train station.

Wat Pa Ban Tat forrest temple (20 Minute taxi ride) located just outside Udon is home to the famous buddist priest monk Phra Maha Bua.

You could also visit the Sunshine Orchid farm not far from the north-western ring-road or Na Kha Thai silk village.

Udon Map has more information and they have good maps available all over Udon.

I hope this helps and have a good time.

  3. Well seeing that your username is 'Up2you' then I would suggest that you head to the UP2U bar which is located opposite the main shopping complex. Look for the big blue logo and follow the signs. They have good food there and is a popular place to for local farangs to hang out. You will also find a few more farang bars around this area. I think Steve's bar is the best place for good valure food (100bt for pie 'n' chips and gravy) it's one of the most popular farang meeting places. You will find Steves on Prajak road around the corner from the main shopping center.

Udon has a helpful farang website Udon Map it has a good map and forum with everything listed.

    Maybe I'll see you around.

  4. Hi. If you are interested in History you could visit the Udon Thani museum on Phosi road, they have information about the Udon area. Udon has a nice park in the central area with lot's of good restaurants to try in the evenings. Hightech night plaza and Lum Udon night market are worth a visit. There is also a good selection of nightlife for a town of it's size.

Maybe you can get a few ideas for things to do on the udonmap website Udon Map they have a good community forum there.

    I hope this helps,

  5. Thanks for your posts Dr P & Huski, I guess you could be right, what I dreaded may come true and there could be an end in sight for the unlimited 30 day visas. To be honest I knew it was kind of illegal as they aren't really permitted to let you enter without an onward ticket out of Thailand, but to this day I've never been asked.

I will have to consider another alternative visa or get ready to make my way back to the UK.

Are there any other options for a person who wishes to stay in Thailand for a long period of time or do I have to get married to be able to stay?

Any help as always will be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    GR

  6. I live near Nong Khai and once a month I do my usual visa run across the frienship bridge to Laos and then return to Thailand to get my 1 month tourist visa. I have been doing this for over a year now but I'm getting worried that I will not be able to do this for much longer as I have recently heard from various people that the law for this visa has changed or is going to change. They say that you may only be allowed to cross the border six times and then you will be given a stamp to say that you will have to leave the country for 6 months before being able to enter again.

I am 29, have a Thai girlfriend and am just enjoying a long vacation over here with her. I have no intention of getting married yet and I'm too young to retire so I can't apply for any other type of visa and I'm getting worried that I will have to leave because of a possible new law.

Does anyone know if what I heard is correct or is it just a misunderstanding? Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks :o
