Another ticket would not be needed for the extension. A onward ticket within 30 days may be needed to board the flight to here but that can be a cheap one way ticket to a nearby country.

Best to get at least a single entry tourist visa before arriving if you plan on staying longer than 30 days.

i don't really understand. why might they need an onward ticket to a nearby country? If they originally may have purchased a return ticket back to the USA, might they need to purchase a new return ticket, or is it possible to have an airline change the date? what is a single entry tourist visa? if they visit a neighboring country then go back to Thailand within the allowed time, to they need to do anything?

A 30 day visa exempt entry can be extended for 30 days at an immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht.

The only problem is that the airline might not allow them to board their flight to here without a ticket out of the country within 30 days. A low cost one way ticket to a nearby country can meet that requirement though.

so, if they want to extend it, they need to go to an immigration office to do so, but they may need to buy another ticket? Is it better then to apply for a visa prior to entering Thailand?

  3. What are the current laws? I read from the Thai embassy website about a 30 day extension if somebody wants to stay longer than 30 days:

thai embassy and this site: for us citizens but i was told that the situation may have changed.  somebody was asking me about how long they can stay if they are a USA citizen without getting a visa. They might want to go for 2 months.. Can you help verify this information?

  4. Yingluck herself has said the rice scheme "lifted the quality of life for rice farmers"

Tell that to the families of farmers who went bankrupt and killed themselves months after you failed to deliver payment as promised. Most of them only got paid after you were thrown out of office.

You understand that they got paid only because the Junta abolished the constitution that prevented payment from being made?

Is there real evidence of the Junta being involved, or is this just speculation?

Also, what I am seeing in this article is that Yingluck agrees with points of loss, etc, but not admitting to being responsible. There are people who do not support Yingluck who want to show that she is responsible, and there are people who support her who to show that she is not.. Hopefully, all the facts will be honestly shown on both sides and this will be resolved showing the actual truth and not be able to push anybody's agenda into this situation.

  5. Why did they do a re-enactment? Investigating the crime, or because there was a cover up?

I think that it is worse publicity for the city to show that the police are covering up crime, then publicizing that there is crime but they are doing their best to prevent it, take care of it, etc.

I agree about the comment about a 22 year old. Though the frontal lobe of the brain is not fully developed until 22, only 13-19 are teenagers.

  6. Arresting this man is a positive step. It would be nice to arrest others as well who do this, as well as those that go to the other countries from Thailand and tell people they will provide their child a good life, but then put them in forced prostitution. There should be some legal consequence for parents who sell their children within Thailand too. . Horrible. Another problem with this is that not just in Thailand, but in other countries as well, people lure young people somewhere with false pretense such as fame and fortune, but then kidnap. This isn't always a result of parents selling their children. There really needs to be a crackdown on this.

  7. Granted, many people have the opinion that meat is not healthy or they appreciate animals very much to want to dissuade eating of meat.

Humans do need fruits and vegetables for health purposes.

However, meat is healthy, and not all animals are slaughtered inhumanely to provide meat to the population.

I agree that animals must be checked for diseases and if used for providing food, this should be done humanely.

Also, if some animals being smuggled still have a collar, it could very well mean that some animals are stolen. It is a possibility. This would mean that somebody may have unwillingly given up their pet. It should only be voluntarily.

Personally, I like meat. I like to eat meat from many different animals. I also have pets, and would be uncomfortable to slaughter my own pets (it is difficult enough for me cut up large half-frozen whole fish). But we can't change that people want to eat meat. We are actually omnivores, not herbivores, so we do not have to cut off meat from human consumption.

But yes, it should be done humanely, and there should be a way to verify that it is not infested meat for human safety.

  8. KFC and the Thai government must close them up. It is an infringement of intellectual property and its use in the most heinous and egregious form with this Thai Hitler/Nazi thing.

As I suggested in the other thread, they could have legal problems with KFC, and using a famous genocidal maniac who tortured and killed millions of people to sell it is not genious, it is stupid, and like spitting in people's faces. I agree they must be sued for this.

If it were for marketing, they could have called it "secret fried chicken" or something.

  9. Hello,

This a warning to all the silly, insensitive people on this forum who post messages which in any way condone what Adolf Hitler did during WW2, or make light of it, or turn it into some kind of joke. If I see posts like this in future I will report you to the moderators. For your information, there were millions of people who suffered during WW2 as a direct result of the barbarians led by Hitler. This is not something to be laughed about. This is not, as one poster stated so stupidly, to be regarded as: "it's funny". People all over the world suffered from this Devil called Hitler, notably in France, Poland and Russia - and above all, of course, it was Jewish people who suffered and were killed. Some of the comments here are seriously offensive, and I would request that people who make them should be banned from this forum. "Adolf Hitler" was not some "funny" guy that we can mention as a joke. He was a fascist dictator who brought untold misery to millions of people throughout the world. I would suggest that if you visited one of the death camps, as I have done - Dachau or Auschwitz (Oświęcim), which have become 'museums' - you might gain some insight into what happened during WW2. Maybe after that you would stop making your silly, offensive comments.

I agree with you. My grandfather was a prisoner at Auschwitz. It's not funny. There was nothing funny about the genocide or what went on at the camps.

But I am curious about why there seems to be a fascination among some people in Thailand about Hitler. I believe that I read about nazi fashion there, and recently I watched "Jakkalan," which seemed to portray a character as something of a caricature of Adolph Hitler. While the caricature was not one that glorified Hitler, I wondered why anything related to Hitler might be portrayed in comedy. Hitler was not funny at all. Hitler chicken is not funny either. It's been mentioned that their icon looks like they used Colonel Sanders from KFC, and pasted Hitler's head on him could be a problem, couldn't it? Maybe especially if Thailand has any KFC?

But I think making "Chaplin Chicken" would be better, but not portrayed as Hitler, but as Charlie Chaplin. There does seem to be a lack of awareness of who Adolph Hitler was. I wonder how many people are wearing the Nazi fashion clothes just because it is popular, but have no idea what is wrong with it.

  10. A lot of people are making jokes about this, but this is a serious issue. For some of the Laotian girls and women, there are people that go to the parents and offer "a better life" for their daughters. The girls are then forced into prostitution. It is usually not their choice.

This is the same for others trafficked from Cambodia, etc. But also, unfortunately, some parents knowingly sell their daughters into this.

There are cases when some think that they can make a better life for their family. They really don't know what is going to happen to them or what they will do. They end up working as prostitutes and it affects their lives negatively in the long-term.

Many who are in this, especially those trafficked, often are not people who chose to be a prostitute. They are somebody's children, and their lives are stolen from them, and only when they are rescued to they have a chance for a future.

In my country, there are people that they lure girls through offers of modeling, acting, etc. They end up getting kidnapped and forced to work as prostitutes. Some of them never make it out alive.

This action taken in Chachoengsao is a big step. It will be a greater step to enforce it throughout Thailand,

  11. Hello, can you provide the links from which the articles reprinted in this thread and the thread here: http://www.thaivisa....t-wef-thailand/ are located at? I saw links to the AFP and "The Nation" website, but not to the articles.

Can anybody provide me the aforementioned information for me? I would like to share the articles, but do not want to share all the debates and comments, as youth may also see the links that I post.

I believe that Suu Kyi being re-elected into a governmental position can be beneficial for her country and people. I agree that children do not always repeat the choices of their parents, and do not necessarily have the same viewpoints. I do believe that Suu Kyi does have a heart to help the Karen people whom the Burmese government has long rejected, persecuted, and taken violent actions against. The government in Burma is in need of a long-awaited change. One that will unify the people, and not separate them causing war in their own country among different ethnic groups. Perhaps this a step in stopping creating child soldiers and stopping child trafficking and slave labor. Also, perhaps this a step towards religious freedom. I have seen how the choices of the government and military forces in Burma have affected the different groups of people.. Their country is in great need of change, and it will not be done overnight, but perhaps Suu Kyi's voice and actions can help move the country in that direction.

  12. I do not believe Hitler representations are funny, entertaining, or neither anything that should be tolerated. Hitler would not have accepted the Thai people. Hitler was against many different groups of people.

I do not believe that turning children's icons into icons that represent hate and marketing them is justifiable, no matter how long ago that it happened. One can use recent international atrocities as a comparison to try and justify it, but one current action of attempted genocide does not make it okay to market the past ones.

This isn't simply about swastikas or inverted swastikas, but of hitler and representations of Nazi paraphernalia.

Didn't the nazis try to make their stuff fashionable in their propaganda?

Where are the ideas to market Hitler coming from?

The best way to build a bridge is not to promote symbolic icons of hate and genocide, but to forgive people and prevent repetition of the hate or symbols of it.

  13. Do you know how much it costs a person in Thailand when I use my Google voice account to call them? I purchased a credit, and I've called to a cell phone in Thailand. I am not sure if it is forwarded to a Thailand number, or they receive a USA number and are charged a lot.

A person from Thailand recommended this, but I would like to know how much the person in Thailand is charged when I call. My friend seems to think they are not, but I don't know if that is correct.

  14. I found this thread searching Google. Is anybody able to tell me if there are any new options or services? I would like to setup a Thailand SIP number for using within the USA to call Thailand, or to receive a call from Thailand.

In the past, I have signed up with various pay services, and didn't always use up my minutes. is there anything that is via the internet that is completely free or extremely cheap? Perhaps one that I don't need to pay 10 -15 USA dollars?

Is anybody familiar with this one: http://www.truenetta...ruenettalk.html

  17. What is the likelihood of such a law actually passing?

A person could argue that banning religious tattoos or fining people who have them apparent as a hindrance to tourism--> an economic barrier.

Regarding jewelry, many people might see banning it for commercial purposes as a problem as well. There are many people that wear it to actually profess their beliefs, and they do not always make them, but they buy them from somebody. This can effect people in work situations and other situations as well. How many people wear them in Thailand generally?

I have a Christian-themed tattoo on my right shoulder, and for me it is a significant meaning. However, I usually dress in a way that covers it up. but what about possibilities of needing to uncover it, for whatever reason?

Is this really a law to protect modesty and religious reputations? Why are two laws that affect religious expression being proposed simultaneously?

  18. SHORTAGE OF ENGLISH TEACHERS

Plan to hire native English-speaking teachers

BANGKOK: -- The Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) will seek a Bt350-million budget to hire 300 native English-speaking teachers for its primary and secondary schools to tackle the shortage of English teachers, a senior official said yesterday.

According to the proposal, the native speakers would each get about Bt1 million per year - a salary of Bt83,000 per month - compared with the Bt9,000 per month drawn by Thais teaching English.

Obec chief Chinaphat Phumirat said the foreign teachers would be from the United States, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, India and the Philippines.

Obec's secondary schools currently have only 25,000 Thai teachers who have graduated in the English language, while primary schools have 5,000 such teachers. He said the move in 2010 to employ 3,000 Thais who had graduated in the English language to teach at its primary schools had boosted the students' academic results greatly. Obec hence felt encouraged to consider employing more native speakers to teach at its schools.

Chinaphat said Obec was coordinating with the Foreign Ministry to recruit the native English-speakers, possibly retired teachers or teaching graduates in their fourth year of study who wanted to get experience in Thailand. They would be given annual contracts and would teach at district-level schools, he said.

Meetings will be held from April 22-24 to discuss the plan before it is submitted for the Cabinet's approval in May, he said. The plan would need a Bt350-million budget to hire 300 teachers for the period October 2011 to October 2012.

He said the plan was a five-year project aimed at hiring 1,000 teachers. However, they would hire 300 teachers in the first year to screen them first.

Will they help teachers get certified too? Such as a person with only an AAS and volunteer teaching experience? Perhaps teaching schooling assistance or higher education assistance?
