  1. Can anyone explain this to me as I'm not to sure... I'm 23 and from UK. Plan to fly into thailand and stay for up to 30 days - so I don't need a visa? Then am going to go to Lao and Vietnam and re-enter Thailand for maybe just over another 30days - whats the best thing to do? I'm confused! Thanks

as you said, for up to 30 days you don't need any visa.

you want to stay longer, apply for a tourist visa, easy to get in any thai embassy or consulate around the world, valid for up to 60 days, depending on where you get it, single, double or multiple entry - in some embassies this can be discussed with the staff. :o

  2. I heard about someone buying a house, with land, in the wife/girlfriends name. He then leased the property from his wife/girlfriend over 99 years (or whatever maximum is) for a few bath.

Anyone know if this is a valid safe way of doing things?

to my knowledge it is a relatively safe way, but :

this possibility only exists if the title for the land is "chanot", anything less than that (4 possibilities) can - by law - not by sold and bought, which does not mean, that thais are not doing it since 50 years or more.

the lease can be for max 30 years, with the possibility of another 30 years later, should be done by a lawyer and ideally include rental fees for the lease and interest payments for the money lent equaling each other.

securities against the shotgun-approach are not so easy and most of times not efficient :o

  3. is it still cold ? that depends on the comparison :

compared to europe it is f**king hot

compared to songkran it is f**king cold

    Where do you live Chico?

Because here near NoneThai 40kms from Korat compared to Songkran its f**king hot!!!!!!

could it be that your songkran-experience stems from london?

in isaan average songkran temp is 25 - 28 at night, 35 - 40 at day, all celsius! and not talking about humidity nearing 100! :o:D

  4. We need a forum where there is none of this endless chatter about bar girls, bar fines, prostitutes, etc, etc... :o

It seems lately that half of the threads end up this way. I try not to be a prude, and adopt an attitude of whatever two adults wanna do with themselves is their business but some days the forum is absolutly obsessed with it, and I take my share of the blame for participating.

The casual reader might with some justification after reading, assume that all women in Thailand either are, were or will someday be prostitutes. You'd also think that all forgieners did here was chase bargirls and pound changs.

The amount of coverage these topics get is probably discouraging some from joining, others from reading, and I can't blame them if there's not alot of women here.

Maybe its time to start clipping the bargirl threads as they show up. Sooner or later hopefully nobody will bother. Lately its been looking like a high school locker room than anything else. Lets aim for a little more intelligent talk?

a : i do not believe in hot icecream!

b : jaydee's idea is the better one!

    :D

  5. last week i spoke to my friend the teacher in NonKhai district she said it was still cold and the locals were not bathing because the water was too cold and they couldnt face a cold shower in the morning so people were starting to pong a bit !

must be bad for the school kids not having adequate clothing in the mornings

is it still cold ? that depends on the comparison :

compared to europe it is f**king hot

compared to songkran it is f**king cold

people who have to use cold shower, usually don't live in comfortable houses, rather simple "baracks", they are used to cold and hot, and although it was this year longer cold than normal, i do not believe any thai not having at least once a day a shower, if not more often!

We are living in the area, and yes, the coldest i have seen on our thermo at 06.00am this winter was 16 celsius, right now, it's pretty back to normal, around 22-25 in the morning, daytime up to 35 (today). :o

  6. Stupid b*stards Siam Commercial at Central Power, Ramkhamhaeng paid me out for GBP 100 instead of GBP 50 simple cash conversion to baht.  I spotted it immediately but kept quiet to see what they would do, if anything.  Later hear my name on the PA system whilst shopping upstairs but can't be bothered to return to the branch lugging heavy bags of groceries.  Get back home 8.30 PM.  Knock on door 10.30 PM and three bank staff, accompanied by my security guard, want half their money back!  No problem ... enjoy teasing them in Thai about banks not being able to count money.

In a western country I can't see bank staff even being willing to work up till 10.30 PM, let alone visit customers' homes.  They would have called at a civilised hour the next day, right?  Lucky for them I gave a true address, although they did photocopy my passport -- however the booths on Sukhumvit don't do this for cash.  It does give rise to the question of 'Would a traveller be stopped at the airport on his final departure if he had moved on from his temporary hotel and the bank had been unable to track him down?'  Given TiT I could easily see his homeward flight being missed while immigration sorts out the mess with the police and the bank ... comments?

50 GBP is about half a month salary for the poor cashier, no wonder, he (she ) is worried - only comment: shame on you, and you better have a problem coming in next time, not on going out! :D:o

  7. buying in your name you need proof of foreign currency been brought into LOS.

buying in your wifes name, you could check rates in UK and LOS and choose the better one, usually in LOS.

but be careful, which bank you are using : SCB, Bangkok bank ok, stay away from foreign curreny transfers with Kasikorn - they are cheating you on the rate by withholding the transfer (even swift) !!

  8. Anyone had any problems with the time it's taken this bank to credit electronic funds from England or the charges that they have made.

yes, i made an swift (express) eurotransfer on dec/27 - rate 52.85 -, money was credited jan/06 - rate 51.83 - after an email to headquarters!

got all kind of "excuses" :

    * money did not arrive earlier - later acknowledged, money came within 20 hours

    * new law, have to contact bank for transfer over 1 million bt - i had contacted head office for new swift code, announcing the transfer

    * could not contact me : account number gives branch, they have all data

after second e-mail to headoffice, asking for explanation - reply, that after checking will contact - not until today (only 20 days!)

kasikorn has been my bank for about 15 years, they will not get another chance to cheat me!

i move to SCB, all transfers in thai bt!! :o

  9. My limited experience is indicating that this is a good way to be an icebreaker with a vendor, is pretty easy to say with a laugh or a smile, and easily helps open the door for both parties to reach an equitable price.

My experience, too. Keep it light. Often I'll ask a price and meet their response with, "tae, lote dai, chai mai?" :D ("but, you can lower it (the price), right?") The seller usually smiles :D , and we start our little dance together... :D

that's exactly what i have been teached "

give a litlle, take a little!

if everybody is happy it's a good deal, and in serious busines you can build upon this and have a good partner for centuries! :o:D

  10. do i get you right?

you ask once for the best price and if this is not, what you want, you stop talking and go?

Yes, that's right. If they give the "best" price and it's OK I accept. If it's not the "best" price I am obviously wasting my time talking to them.

I do a lot of business with the Chinese and all other nationalities. I give a price and they take it or leave it based on whether they consider it a fair price.

    [/quote

it seems like you are looking for someone to pay (o give) you what your want,

and you don't care about future business relationships? :D:o

  11. I let my wife do the bargaining.

She generally gets a better price than I do.

It is expected part of buying things!!

My teeruk bargains better than I do too... but that's to be expected. :D

    I'm a falung! :D

(I bet that's going to get some responses... :D )

just one little story (that one is not for mee, he would probably change his mind about me!)

pattaya, about eight years ago, strolling down walking street in late afternoon, i saw a cute little elefant, which i wanted to buy : 100bt, reasonable price, but then i thought, just by curiosity, how deep can i get the price down?

after about ten minutes discussing and me living the shop twice, the lady agrees to 45bt! i give her a 100, she returns 55 and hands me the elefant - then i give her the change and start walking - you cannot imagine her face! everything in it :

anger, fear, uncertainty... only when she sees, that i really walk away and smile, does she start smiling too!

:o:D that smile was worth more than 55bt!

  12. I hate bargaining and don't do it. I either pay the price or walk away - often the latter, especially when you agree their price and they go back on it.

A couple of weeks ago we agreed to buy some land at the asking price of Bt400K - as we were about to pay the price went up to Bt440K, the vendor said their children thought it was worth more - I replied that their children should buy it then and walked away - they were astonished.

We had agreed a price for having 300 truckloads of earth dumped on another plot - after about 50 truckloads the contractor said he wanted more for one reason or another. I told him to get off the land - he carried on and I paid the previously agreed sum.

I ask for a best price and that is what I expect to get. My wife has got the message and usually tells any vendors the score.

    do i get you right?

you ask once for the best price and if this is not, what you want, you stop talking and go?

i've made the experience that a little talking never does any harm, but usually get's people together.

the point is not, to get the absolut best price, but to get a price fair for both, then you can make make good deals also in the future!

chinese are said to be masters in this, and my little experience in that can confirm it.

i don't know if the name KARASS rings a bell to you, it certainly does all over the US and in big european companies.

he is THE EXPERT in bargaining (not bargainhunting!), and basically all big US companies send their middle and higher management staff to his seminars - they are expensive and intensive, but you do learn a lot!

and many things are so clear, just many of us don't think about them!

    :o:D

  14. I always ask for a discount... even in department stores.

And I don't look on it as "taking advantage", it is simply getting the best deal you can for the item(s) you want to purchase.

It is all about choice... the vendor can choose to sell at a particular price, and you can choose to buy.

You can also choose to say "no thanks" and walk away.

I think that in general, Thai vendors expect (and actually enjoy) a good bargaining session, so long as it's done with a smile. :D

Hey Jay, nice to see you back!

one of the most important lessons in my life was given to me in Florida :

    if you ask, your chance is 50 % yes : 50 % no, if you don't ask, it's 100 % no!

    I'll never forget this! :D:o

  15. I don't have a problem.

In fact I feel very lucky.

It's just that I see someone looking for 100% fairness in another thread.

    returning a favor?

no, i was never looking for 100% fairness, i never said that, i reiterated two times that i was just asking if someone could give me an undertandable answer -

but, "i am not disappointed", maybe i should polish my english to be better understood? :o:D

  16. since many of the recent posts to "access fees" have been strolling of in this direction, why not talk straight about it?

do you look to get a better deal, or do you just always pay the asking price?

is it fair, to get better deals, who probably will have to be (inknowingly) paid for by others?

or is this discrimination and taking advantage of those who do not want or cannot get better deals? :o

  17. I have read with great interest the pros and cons of dual pricing. Up until now I have always railed against it but reading the well reasoned arguments of the fans of it I now realise I was wrong.

What really swung it was the one "If I don't like it sod off home" actually I thought this was my home, there again I can't be right all the time.

So I propose that the people who are in favour of being ripped off contact the people who don't like getting ripped off so they can send the extra 180 baht per person to those that do visits these places.

I reckon we visit the parks and waterfalls etc. about 5 times a year with overseas visitors usually two or three at a time 5x3x180 =2,700 baht call it 3 thousand for fun, you can send it a brown envelope I won't mind at all, promise.

This way everyone will be happy, especially me.

could you probably include me in your recipients list?? :D:o

  18. KAN WIN said
I go to these places, because I want to and even with a P.R. which I have, I do not show it. I just pay the same as all the other Non-Thai people visiting.

    No problem for me.

    hi kan win,

i'd be interested to know why you pay the increased fees when you visit these places , and you must visit a lot of them judging by your photos.

is it just the national parks or would also be willing to pay more to use a tuk tuk in patong or pattaya just because of your nationality ?

kan win, your fotos are truly perfect, (unfortunately better than most of mines) and i do recognize many of the places, but even if you cannot (or will not) charge the fees sometime, somewhere what is the reason to be happy to pay them?

have to agree with taxexile : are you paying everywhere in thailand double or higher fees?

meemiathai is suggesting something like this to help the pour people!?

i do not believe that those fees are going to the needy, if someone want to do something for them, PM me, i give you plenty of adresses in isaan!!

    :o:D

    chico, I am very disapointed!

How can you say that I was suggesting this double pricing to help the poor people?

I was simply answering your question.

Are you that thick to misunderstand it or was it done on purpose?

    :D

:D sorry, definitely not intentional. i thought i was quoting you from another post, after rereading some i cannot find it, therefore i guess, just my mistake.

    my apologies again! :D:D
