  1. Typically, grass seed is not used in the tropics. If you do find some in the market it will probably be some low grade stuff from china and may not take, but you never know, some years back there was some bermudagrass developed in the US that produced a viable seed.

The most common native grass variety here is Zoysia Matrella. Sometimes incorrectly called Japanese grass. There are two types, the other is Zoysia japonica but does not grow here. Do as mentioned in a post above, cut out sprigs, or plugs from your existing grass and plant them where you need them. Make sure you try to eliminate compaction and apply some 15-15-15 fertilizer and keep the newly planted area wet until established....1-2 months should give complete coverage.

  2. Thank you 7by7. Yes we had the visa dated three months in advance (Feb), and would then travel two months later (Apr) giving us 25 months in the UK.

We will be flying from Manila rather than BKK so I'm not sure whether that will have any bearing with the IO at LHR regarding the TB certificate. I dont recall seeing a TB certificate requirement for the visa app in Manila, though I maybe wrong. Maybe better just to get another cert. to be on the safe side.

    Thanks for your advice.

  3. My wife has her UK settlement visa having passed her Bulats test with an overall mark of A2 (speaking was B2+, listening B1, reading and writing A2 I think).

The grades are as per European standard of testing languages if I remember correctly, however, for my wife to apply for ILR her English skills need to be at ESOL level 3 or above. I have looked but cannot find where there is information regarding the correlation between the two standards; 7by7, do you know where ESOL level 3 sits with the A1 up to C2 standard?

Another question: By the time we leave to travel to the UK (next April), the TB certificate valid for 6 months will have expired, how relevant is the certificate upon arrival at immigration considering that the settlement visa was successfully approved last month?

Thanks if you can shed some light on these two issues.

  4. Another TV member with a successful settlement visa application. I applied with my wife on October 21, passport available for collection on November 14. Three weeks, when I was expecting up to three months given that my wife is not Thai. Bit of a shock since we are not in any great hurry to relocate due to employment here.

Can anybody advise if their wife/partner is asked to show their TB certificate at the UK immigration. By the time we do depart my wife's TB certificate will have expired, will we need to get a new one does anbody know?

Thanks for all the good input from everybody here.

I'm going through the same thing at the moment, the test centre's on the ukba website were out of date and no longer provide the tests. However, Kunash posted a link the other other day to the local test centres here in Thailand (not the same link as posted above). Vantage Siam appears to be the only company responding to my e-mails last week. They test every week which the others do no appear to do. In fact, Pearson do not test again until november.....useless. I tried to call to see if this is truely the case, no answer; so vantage siam looks like our best bet.

If anybody has had their spouse take the test in the last month, please advise which test centre is operating and which tests are being taken, thanks.

  6. Thanks for the above info. I am in Thailand on a non imm B and my wife and two kids are non imm O. Yes she is a Philippine national. We don't have the last expired passport which was my concern. I have plenty of other strong supporting docs but was not sure the emphasis they placed on previous travel history. Based on all your kind replies, we'll apply without it and hope the rest is sufficient.

    Thanks for the replies.

  7. I am applying for my wifes settlement visa; so far I can supply a fair amount of supporting documenation after seven years, 2 kids and marriage. However, could somebody advise how much emphasis may be placed on not supplying my wifes previous passport which is currently locked away in our safety box in the Philippines and therefore not easily accessible.

We have travelled considerably, and my wife had done so prior to our meeting yet her current passport does not reflect this. Would this be an issue to an ECO?

Secondly, is it advisable to submit our childrens original British passports in the application or will photocopies suffice?

    Thanks...

  8. My daughters passport will expire July 24th 2011. Our current extensions expire on March 5th, 2011. I have applied for a new passport which is due shortly, however, if I do not have it soon can somebody confirm that the new extension will be put in the current passport with a validity up to July 24th, 2011 and we can then get the remaining extension period once the new passport is received.

FYI, I'm on a Non Imm B together with my Filipina wife and 2 kids on Fil passports.

    Thanks.

  9. While I would not deny the scams are taking place, there is the flip side of this story. Yesterday at approx 5pm I saw a pair of jets skis doing their thing, one of which planted itself on some rocks off Cosy beach. The operator tried for 5 minutes to first drive himself off and then repeadedly rocking the ski until finally he was off. There is no doubt this craft suffered not only gelcoat damage but most probably serious grp delamination too. If the operator (indian renter) got away with B100k, I would say he was lucky.

This is not the only incident in recent weeks. I also saw a goup of skis, two of which collided at a fair speed, one of which became submerged before they luckily towed it to the beach. Frankly, nobody should be allowed to rent these machines, ban them...problem solved.

  10. Cebu Pacific are not very user friendly when it comes to online payment. No probs with the card or issuing bank, just that Ceb Pac does not like many cards, particularly UK ones. Apparantly, Mastercard works, but I dont have one of those.

  11. Does anybody have any up to date information on Pattaya area travel agents who can sell or obtain Cebu Pacific Air tickets to Manila?

Usual online problems occurring and cannot get through to the authorised agents in Bangkok.

    Thanks for any recent info.

  12. At Phoenix the B50k per term is correct. It works out at B10k per month. You choose which program you want i.e. English program which has a daily dose of Thai, or the Thai program that has a daily dose of English. You can also have a bit of Chinese thrown in as well. There are extra programs in the afternoons (extra charge) if you want to expand on one language or another.

  14. I'm working here on a Non B and work permit. My family joined me here having secured Non O visas (3 months, single entry) in Manila. We travelled together and our 3 months are due on March 5th.

I have given my employer plenty of notice (6 weeks) to prepare the necessary company documents required for our extension but it looks like there could be delays. How long does it take for Immigration dept to process the extension request if all the docs are in place? If my employer cannot secure the docs in time, will we all have to leave the country or are there any other options? (My daughter is in school and having paid large sums to put her there I'll be damned if we have to go through the whole visa application process again).

    Any suggestions much appreciated.

  15. Richard, my gut feeling says take your house off the market until the new condos are complete. Any prospective buyer is simply being scared off by such a high asking price given the condition of the immediate surrounding area. After completion of said highrise, stick the sign back on the gate after re appaising fair market value. With a completed (and its going up fast) condo block, better chance to attract genuine house purchasers.

  16. I have my house for sale in Ptty, i have had it listed with 14 agents since August 2009.

In total i have had 5 viewings, from 3 agents. No buyers, or offers.

Quite a few of the agents haven't even advertised it.

Its not that there is something wrong with the property.

I think I've seen your property. Perhaps take the blinkers off and you will notice some large concrete condo structures very close to your house thereby blocking the sea view. This is why there are no offers. Incomplete concrete shells and round the clock construction on another condo unit do little to entice prospective buyers. Regret to say you are in a difficult position and will never sell for half the asking price. P Hill could be so much better if for some decent zoning and if builders would stop dumping their trash on adjoining vacant land.

  17. I'm am working here in Thailand on a Non B multi entry with work permit. My family will be coming over from the Philippines (wife, 2 young kids) on Philippine passports for a one month holiday. Due to airline policy two adults need to accompany 2 young kids so I will nip back to make the trip with them. They will enter and get a 30 day stamp as allowed for Philippinos.

Upon entry at immigration am I likely to encounter any issues since it states on my Non Imm B visa, 'no. of accompanying children' Zero?

Since they were not included in my application for the non B I dont think it should be an issue, but any info to the contrary would be appreciated.

Second question, could somebody post a link for info regarding my family joining me full time in three or so on my Non B multi visa.

    Thanks.

  18. Chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate, is a commonly used insecticide worldwide. It is available in Thailand from profesional distributors in the agricultural industry and maybe available at the local hardware store for control of termites. There is some very interesting reading in wiki on this readily available chemical; symptoms are described, not sure if they correlate with the victims symptoms.

  19. Guys, grass seed wont help you in Thailand, or anywhere in the tropics for that matter; thats why you cannot find any. Seed is used in cool season climates and some transition zones (middle east for example) during the winter.

What you need are sprigs which are harvested from existing turf, for an amateur this is not really possible, therefore you are better off buying turf (or sod as it is commonly known) and laying it accordingly. Just keep the dog off it for 2 weeks to let the roots get established. There are different types of turfgrass available, most of the nice stuff with a finer, softer leaf needs sunshine and wont tolerate shade. The coarser leafblade type is more shade tolerant if required.
