  1. When they built our pool, the body corporate would not allow the excavator on side (something about road damage), so they dug it out by hand (1.5m deep), then they had to install 36 x 8m pilings to support the base of the pool. The holes were dug by hand, and the concrete piles driven in as per the video.

I never did take a video, but it was impressive to say the least.

This was in suburbia Bangkok with nothing but clay for miles around, and fathoms below!

  2. Hi BBJ,

My wife and I have a house about 10 minutes from Fashion Island. 3 bed, 3 bath with garden and a private pool (3 x 6 x 1.3m). We have moved away for work requirements and have it in our minds to rent the house. Comes fully furnished, pool is looked after twice weekly and garden is also serviced. It could be a straight walk in and hang up clothes type of place.

House is in a Moo Baan and security is very good. All common areas are well looked after. The next door neighbour (thai) are a good family. There is only a couple of other foreigners in the 300 house complex. My wife and I have been there for six years and very much enjoyed it. Quiet and safe.

Photos are available through private email if you would like to see more.

    Cheers,

    Aussie.

  3. All depends on the type of crowd you roll with I guess. I paid $1.5M in cash, with 20 Baht in gold. Got it all back a few days later, less 180k for the ceremony expenses, which catered for almost 300 people.

My wife's family are not wealthy, but are more than reasonable and have never asked me for a cent.

    Sometimes you win, sometimes not....

  4. Hi ryanhull,

My wife and I have a 3 bed house, small garden, deck with pool possibly available in 2-3 months. We too are expecting a baby, in 3 weeks and will move out of country when they can both travel. We may consider renting our house, or sell, depending on requirements. Plus side for you is it comes furnished and already has a baby nursery set up.

We are about 10 minutes from Fashion Island. Secure Moo Baan with lots of family/children about. Close to shopping, supermarkets etc. we have been here 6 years and really enjoy it.

Let me know your thoughts, we are open to all suggestions.

    Cheers.

  5. G'day all,

Can anyone point me in the direction of locating international wall sockets in Bangkok? I have a few appliances that are of a foreign nature and I would like to install a few wall sockets that are capable of accepting multiple plugs, such as you would find in a good hotel these days.

Any ideas where to find them? I'm having a look in Hong Kong, but would source locally if they are available?

    Thanks in advance.

  6. BIC (Bangkok Infertility Clinic). Don't have the address handy, but you can Google their website.

IVF (ICSI) package starts at 218,000 Baht. Medications required after the first pregnancy test are approx 9,000 Baht.

BIC are a well known clinic and have a good reputation from all accounts. Doctor is Australian trained, good English. A nice facility with a relaxed atmosphere.

I have also heard good reports from the Phayathai 2 and Synphaet Hospitals. Several hospitals have IVF clinics, but this is all I have researched.

Wife and I have experience with BIC, and so far, so good ;)

  7. Afternoon all,

Is there any special fittings required for pool plumbing (from a manufacturer / quality stand point)? The plumbing I have looks to be made up of standard PVC 1.5" pipe etc.

If I were to use the standard PVC cement as available say from home pro, can I expect any problems or should I buy from a pool supply store and use what they use?

I need to install a ball valve prior to the pump inlet and plan on using standard PVC hardware ex home pro, but if there is a specific standard that should be used, I appreciate the heads up.

    Suggestions, experience and comments appreciated.

    Cheers,

  8. G'day all,

I have a 1 HP Hayward Super II pump fitted to my in ground pool. Due to some design screw ups in the build phase of which I was not home to monitor, the pump room is under ground as an extension of the pool structure itself. This was done for reasons of space saving, but what was not thought about was ventilation and as mentioned, I was not on site to monitor what was being done about it until it was too late and they had basically closed in the room with an access hatch. This has caused the pump room to have poor ventilation and does wreak havoc on the main pump and counterflow swim pump due to high humidity and condensation from plumbing work.

    To my problem...

The hayward pump motor has finally given up and failed for the third time. The first and second was due to water ingress which caused a short. This was repaired and have since rectified the water ingress cause. I found out that when the motor was first repaired, the motor was re-wired to remove all selection for 115v and had some wires cut, joined, wrapped in electrical tape and nicely put back under the end cap never to be seen again, until today! Anyway, the cause of the last failure was the bearings letting go. heaven forbid should I expect that whilst the pump is open, one would replace bearings? So rather then spend the coin repairing it again, I am in the hunt for a replacement motor.

Searching provides no end to the replacement possibilities, but I have a disagreement in the model number of the motor I have and the options available. The original motor was manufactured by AO Smith, now Century Electric Motors. When I search Century with my model number, C48K2DA23A1, it states no replacement available. However, searching a few US websites, there are replacement pumps available for the same HP, Flange Type, Service Factor, Voltage etc. basically, they would bolt onto the Hayward pump housing that I have. My concern is that the RPM is rated higher at 3450 against 2850 of the original and there seems to be a difference in overall length (the replacement being longer by about 1.5 inch) and the AMPS rating is higher 15.0/7.5 against the original 14.0/7.0.

I may be making a mountain out of a molehill here, but are there any reasons why the available replacement motors on the market would not slide in to the housing I have and do the job with those small variations?

A new complete pump is available in country for 20k+, but I don't want to head down that path unless really necessary, not for cost reasons so much as for plumbing reasons. Again, the genius who made the plumbing has not installed isolation valves for the main pump which makes removing it a hassle. I will get to this at a later date, but for now, just want to source a pump motor that will suit my needs.

Any experts out there having knowledge of these differences? Thoughts and input is welcome.

    Thanks in advance...

  9. G'day to all,

Looking for a decent repair shop to rebuild a couple of pumps I have. One is the filter pump, a Hayward single phase 1HP which needs bearings and possibly a rewind. The second is a single phase 3HP which needs some attention on the outside casing.

Unfortunately, my pump room is not well ventilated and subject to some water ingress, either via rain water or condensation. I need to do some work on the ventilation and by doing so, will solve most of the other problems.

Anyway. If anyone has a good contact, I am about the Minburi area of Bangkok and would appreciate a heads up.

    Cheers,

  10. Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister has also ordered the AOT to talk to the Royal Air Force about the operation of a golf course under its supervision, the Kantarat Golf Course, which is located between the runways of Don Muang Airport.

    You're kidding, right!?

Played that course a few times.......a serious slice can have you out of bounds and into a turbofan, no matter of club selection will get you out of that one ;)

  11. We are in Moo Baan Saransiri 1, off Panya-Intra Road. So far, no flooding out on the main road, and zero in the Moo Baan. I just went down the back of the property and checked the main drains and they have risen 14cm in 24 hours. The water is still 50cm below road level and will require at least a 1.5m rise to make it inside the houses here. So far so good, but as with everything, time will tell.

They have 5 pumps set up at the back of the property and 2 inside the main entrance which empty into a small khlong that crosses the front of the property.

    Good luck to all.

  12. I am just down the road from Safari World, and although there are sandbags about, there is no definite signs of flooding. In fact, i would estimate that only a small percentage of homes/shops/moo baan's actually have any sort of protection. I have to leave Thailand Thursday for a week, so I hope all is where I left it when I return?

  13. Just purchased the 2.4 EL Accord....bought from the Honda dealer on Lad Prao (just up from the FoodLand). We were given free insurance, a cash discount of 24,500 plus some 18 free inclusions....(wife did the negotiating :) ). We did the motor expo a couple of months back and the Camry and Accord were next to each others stands...To be honest, I found the Camry interior and front panel to be dated and did not have that "spark" when being viewed. The Accord had a more modern look to it (just my two cents worth).

They are both on par with each other for the most part...comes down to personal taste and what you want from a car I guess.

    Cheers....Aussie :D
