You just proved the point that there is much more than just one thing you can't talk about in Thailand and most other places..."free speech"

is rapidly fading into oblivion..accused of all the ism's, hate speak

mis,dis and mall information, (Putin) propaganda !!

Agreed but that was under a military government and they were arrested under laws that are very specific to Thailand ( lese majeste). Protesters who didn’t breach LM laws were left alone because they got around the Covid regulations by traveling in cars with less than 5 passengers.I don’t understand why people are defending a guy who is doing business here on a tourist visa. The OP is actually misleading by suggestion that he might be charged for criticizing the country when his real crimes were related to breach of his visa conditions which he incriminated himself for.

What a sell out. He reported the truth.  But thailand turns a blind eye to the truth.

Yes he reported the truth that he was running a business illegally whilst on a tourist visa and was picked up by the police for it so I guess that they didn’t turn a blind eye to it. All the other stuff like insulting the nurse who was trying to help him was irrelevant but not likely to put the authorities into a tolerant mood towards him. Isn’t there a website called the Darwin Awards for people like him.

This one?  Worldwide should be good enough for Malaysia.

Thanks. Mine is actually slightly different but I found reference to one like mine that confirms the same information. My concern arose after I read a post elsewhere where someone said that their SCB ATM card didn’t work in Malaysia so I thought I would check rather than get caught out. I can always carry cash of course or change money at the airport.

  4. It always saddens me when a story like this is published on TV and all that most posters can do is make smart Alec comments about how bad safety is on Thai roads and how they could easily solve the problem. If it is so easy to solve then how come there are still 40,000 road deaths a year in the USA despite strict policing and legislation.personally all I want to do is offer my condolences to the families of the bereaved and count my self lucky that I left work early yesterday so I was on the motorway earlier than the incident in the post.

  5.

Bangkok was ranked the world's most visited city with nearly 16 million people travelling to the Thai capital, ahead of London and Paris

sorry but London had 28 millions visitors and Paris 26 millions ..... I wonder where they got their information .

They may have got it from Forbes http://www.forbes.com/sites/andrewbender/2013/06/07/bangkok-tops-the-worlds-10-most-visited-cities/

Ha Ha. The source data quoted in Forbes comes from MasterCard and is quoted by numerous news providers. I couldn't find mention of the 28 million mentioned in laurentbkk's post anywhere on the net. Even London's own advertising agency only claims 16 million. It seems that the OP is correct (or at least verifiable) unlike certain TV poster's claims:-)

  6. coming 55 out of 60 is no news. It is normal for a country that wasn't colonised. The interesting news is that Thailand ranked 10 out of 60 for rate of improvement in English. Now that is surprising and suggests that the education system here is doing something right . Unfortunately none of the posters read the report and jumped o with the negative posts hased on thr news summary. Not clever guys.i say well done Thailand and poor old S. Korea who poured huge sums into English learning only to get worse at it

  7. The Thai government wants to hire 50,000 foreigners to do work the Thais don't want or don't know how to do. Does this mean that the government does not think Thais are capable or they just want a free lunch. It sounds like a complicated solution to a simple problem. The correct attitude would be “get off the mobile, get out of debt, and go to work.” This is directed to the youth.

The unemployment rate among Thai citizens is less than 01% with many having two jobs to make ends meet. It's one of the reasons that 'speed' pills are so popular in this country. With all the flood prevention schemes, 2.2 - 2.5 trillion Baht infrastructure schemes, etc., Thailand needs a lot more workers than are currently available.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. There are thousands, if not millions, of workers semi-employed growing rice under government subsidy, but happy to do so because of their lifestyle. Stop the subsidy, make small-holding rice farming uneconomic (ie face reality) and they will be forced to seek employment elsewhere. But don't expect them to vote for you when the real world bites their arse.

I think it would be good if posters on TV start including a few more verifiable facts in their posts. When you make a statement disagreeing with another poster ( and where does his figure of lessthan 1% unemployment come from?) claiming that "there are thousands if not millions of workers semi employed ...." it just tells me that you can't estimate the number of such workers within a factor of thousands and consequently you are really not in a position to disagree with his point. I am not trying to have a go at you as this forum is full of factless posts containing highly opinionated statements about various topics and I think it would improve the quality of the debates if more people at least attempted to support their opinions with a few facts:-)

  8. Bloody EIAs.

How dare the people to be involved.

Absolutely - anybody would think its their money giggle.gif

This is a democratically elected peoples' government - they can do what they want. They have the peoples' mandate. All these pesky NGO's and agitators - how dare they interfere with important government scams schemes that have been carefully thought through to benefit the Shin gang people.

Some will be challenging the hugely beneficial long term rice pledging scam scheme next.

Yes they may have got the Idea from the US where George Bush lifted the ban on offshore oil drilling in Alaska in 2005 without even studying the environmental impact. A shocking decision that wasn't blocked until Obama got in.

Unfortunately in this case the project in question is clearly intended to benefit ordinary people and companies who live/operate in flood risk areas rather than lining corporate coffers and the downside is that completing the EIA might take a year or more which increases the risk of further flooding. The best solution might be to place a contract for the design and EIA studies since you don't actually need to have an approved EIA until construction starts according to my understanding of Thai regulations

Are you saying that the environment should not be considered just go ahead and start building dams? Yes it might set them back a year or two. But this is a permanent structure you don't just go and build one and then say Oh this is wrong it has damaged to much of the environment. Not to mention the people living there.

That attitude is what has gotten the Government into so much trouble all ready. Do any thing involving big money so they can get there nose in the trough.

The land has been there for many years and seen many floods. It won't hurt to make sure you are doing the right thing.

I said " The best solution might be to place a contract for the design and EIA studies". I didn't suggest that the environment shouldn't be considered although that was GWB's crazy approach to getting oil companies access to Alaska.Thailand's EIA process requires public consultation which will be difficult if the design hasn't been prepared. It also makes sense to place the EIA/design contracts early as it gets the ball rolling without having to commit huge sums of money

  10. This will definitely happen, and most likely be a great success. Too many whinging farangs on here who think Thais can't do things. But all the farangs on here can do is constantly whine and whinge. Don't you have anything better to do with your lives?

Be fair, we dont think it, we KNOW it!!

Speak for your self tourist. What do you KNOW? You obviously haven't worked here

  11. Hmm so they built a power station, and then they laid a cable from the mainland to supply the power station with power. Logical, no? Just like you build a train station - you build it, then lay down the railroad tracks to the train station, so it can be supplied with trains from another train station?

I think something has been lost in translation. I think they are talking about a Power receiving station not a power generating station. PEA is a power distibution company not a generating company. It seems that they have installed a second subsea cable with a switching station on the island which will provide redundancy in the supply. A totally sensible idea which will help to provide a reliable power supply.

  12. I would have thought Thai students were WORSE than this. The stupid systems the Government has for people who ACTAULLY speak english is terrible. You have to LEAVE thailand to get a visa for a few months to come back and TEACH THais english. Then the money you earn you use agaoin to leave the country to get another Vidsa to come back. this is the case for most people I speak to or they teach ILLEGALLY on retirement visas. getting a proper work visa is hard because the incentive to be paid a low wage is not really there.

The government if it wants PROPER ENGLISH TEACHERS needs to change its visa policy otherwise thais will be going back to living under banana palms and climbing cocoumt trees... or chasing faranbngs dfor income as they are proficient at.

I have travelled EXTENSIVELY and Thailand with SO MANY TOURISTS lags behind the world in Elglish

If you think the level of Elglish (sic) in Thailand is the worst in the world try going to places like Venezuela in South America
