  1. I stayed there in April, not got very positive suggestions im afraid, they were useless in the hotel literally would not book us a taxi and kept sending us to edge of the street to get taxi. There were baht bus there but got stung every time we got a lift.

I would try arrange something before hand, get a taxi drivers business card or a motorbike taxi number ...

I wouldtnt stay there again due to it being such hard work to get back/forth from hotel

  2. Just arrived back yesteday from an amazing 3 weeks, but something unsavory happened at airport,

I was listening to my Ipod as we pulled up to airport in taxi, i took it off and put it in my bag which i was carrying on my shoulder - i then went through and checked in, went through security, went for food etc with the bag on my shoulder at all times - when i boarded the plain i went to put Ipod on but it was gone. The zip on my bag slightly open but the contents of my bag was a mess, I cant believe someone stole it, they would have to have x-ray eyes to find it but whatever happened the thing has gone. I am baffled cause at no point was the bag left unattended , was on my shoulder or by my feet at all times.

now i have travel insurance so will be ringing them, i dotn fancy my chances but no harm in trying.

Had anyone got an email address for airport or tourist police ? anyone i can email to at least show i made some attempt to report it? the plane was practically taking off when i realised so was pointless reporting it when i arrived back in London.

any help appreciated please, only worth £150 but i always take out travel insurance and never made a claim in my life so going to try

    thanks

  3. Think we pretty set on catching that 'sprinter' train as they called it,

That train they say in email is 22.50 to 08.05 so im assuming that gets into Suratthani, then Lomprayah offer a 9am, 11.10am service from Suratthani to Koh Samui (nathon) so we should make one of them easily i hope ...

going to be long night but I think that's our trip down sorted

I have always just flown but the girlfriend wants to do it this way

    thanks for help

  4. Hi,

On April 2nd we were looking at getting the sleeper train from bangkok but my girlfriend says she has checked and they are sold out that night, i thought booking 2 weeks in advance would be fine but obviously i was wrong, this was the email -

' I AM SORRY THAT ALL AIR CON SLEEPER TRAIN TICKETS FULLY BOOKED AND NOW THEY ARE AVAILABLE ONLY SPRINTER TRAIN WHICH IS RECLINING SEAT WITH AIR CON, DEP 22.50-08.05, BUT THIS SPRINTER TRAIN COULD NOT CATCH OUR BUS/FERRY TO KOH SAMUI AND HAVE TO ARRANGE YOUR OWN TRANSPORT'

if we catch this train is it straight forward to get ourselves to Samui ?

    any help appreciated please

    thanks

  5. The rates are about 4 percent worse than outside (own observation/calculation).

Its a mafia style arrangement, all booths have identical rates (whatever bank they belong to).

If you have the need to change a reasonable amount at the airport:

go down to the lowest level where the rail-link is situated.

There you find a K-Bank exchange booth, which has "regular" exchange rates (same like K-Bank outside airport).

(not open 24h, forgot opening hours)

The rail-link level is not covered by the Suv. mafia ripoff arrangements.

Seems to be administered by the state railway, so not part of the airport (legally).

    Now that's an answer smile.png

All i want is a decent rate, really did not want any fuss so bottom floor it is , thank you very much for that

unrelated question but am i still able to go up to top floor and grab a taxi that is dropping people off at arrivals ? just found they bit cheaper

  6. The rates offered in the airport are poor. Only change what you have to at the airport and wait until you get in town. Best rate at TT Exchange.

I figured they would not be the best rate, always try to sting you at the airport, just thought the savings on a £1000 would not be that much,

can see the wife marching me around BKK looking for good rate sad.png

anyone have idea of difference in rate ? please ..... like roughly ?

  7. This probably been asked a million times on here before so i apologise, had quick search with no joy so ..

arriving from UK with small amount of holiday cash, say £1000 tops to exchange, is the rate much better in Bangkok itself ?

ideally i would like to arrive and change it all in Airport and just get on with my holiday .. i cant see me saving much money by searching for better rate but i told my partner i would at least find out for sure,

    any help appreciated ?

    thanks

  8. You simply have to tell them that you want it fileted with the meat only.

Most Thai dishes will serve the fish whole, since the head is actually considered a delicacy and some would say is the best part of the fish.

(Personally, I'd like to have the eyes if you don't mind...)

But most restaurant should be able to serve you only the fileted meat if you explicitly requests so.

Some restaurant may not understand "filet", so just tell them in simple English, "no head" and "no bone" and they should understand what you mean.

    perfect, thank you :)

  9. I did try this in the Food forum but did not get one reply so will try here, sorry for repeating myself.

anyways, Been many times but myself and partner always tend to end up eating same food i eat back home, got nice 3 weeks on the islands coming up and im determined to eat more local food.

I love fish but in the past when i have tried to be adventurous and ordered fish it lands on my plate exactly that - a whole fish - have to admit i dont enjoy that ...

So my question is simply are there any dishes/fish that would come meat only/filleted or if when i ordered would they take the head off and remove bones?

or is it just the Thai way of things it comes as a whole fish and thats that ?

apologies if you think its a silly post but just need a little guidence

    thanks a lot

  10. Afternoon/evening,

myself and my partner are booked into the Sosofitel for 3 nights next week, my girlfriend has read reports of a death in lumpini park and people on the tripadvisor forum are telling her no to stay at sosofitel.

Obviously i dont want to put ourselves at risk but the hotel seems to be running as normal

anyone got advice please? safe to stay there you think?

    thanks

  11. Wasnt sure whether to post this in Samui or Food forum so im starting here :)

  12. If you are worried about saving a few Pounds on card fees is Thailand the best choice as a long range holiday. I use my UK cards and get a very good exchange rate. The 3 Pound charge is tiny compared to what the holiday will cost you and you can withdraw subject to available funds up to 30,000Baht at some ATM's now so you don't need to go that often.

Im very sure about coming back to Thailand , thanks anyway

Myself and my partner on holiday tend to visit a cashpoint every night after a few drinks, we are on holiday, it happens - think we pay like £4 ish on every withdrawal so if there is a way to save on that then just seems common sense to me, for sake of a few posts on a forum, just throwing money away otherwise. I appreciate the suggestion of taking 30,000 odd out at a time but i just would not feel safe doing that, im the type of guy who would lose my wallet.

The Kalixa Pay card looks pretty handy, although the ICE card coming with a back up card is very appealing ....

    thanks fir the help everyone
