Phuket is on a regular basis asking for proof of money spent locally. I don't think this is connected to the UK and US income verification letter saga at all.

The "locally" thing never happened to me regardless of being a "routine". BTW what? Are you supposed to keep every single purchase slip from a cashier?? Is your name on a slip??

  2. Cheers

    Mick

I have recently built a home in Thailand (Isaan)

A great experience for me....as I had a good contractor.

If you are inteested in contact details...PM me.

    He works all over Thailand.

    post-36548-1176382090_thumb.jpg

    Around 2 million baht...4 bedrooms,3 baths

Mick , I 'd appreciate the contact for your builder. Does he operate in Phuket too?

  3. [Am quite happy with dara samut, and have heard that kajongiat is okay.Am happy with the acedemic results and think it is important for the kids, that if they are going to lie here the are schooled in the thai environment. His english skills are excellent, there are a lot of look-kreung kids there in both the normal and bilingual programs.I believe is is well advanced on where he would be in my home country where there is a lack of discipline in schools these days

Big Guy, When you say he's more advanced than he would've been in my country... where are you from? What are the yearly fees?

I've checked the fees in first grade BCIS it's 600,000 baht. Prohibitive for me. Does anyonre know what are they at other comparable schools?

  4. AIA is a good Insurance Company. Wife and myself are with them . But there are surely others that are good too.

By the way i think this is in the wrong Forum...should be in the health section , not the real estate,

    rcm :o

I've been reading a lot of insurance posts lately. From what I can see I got ripped off by AIA major time. A month ago I had bought an insurance (AIA) for my (Thai) wife. i paid about 20k baht for coverage for max. 80,000 per ilness, and no coverage for any condition that results from her being pregnant. From what I'm reading she should get a coverage of some 1 - 1.5 M per ilness for that money, right?

Also AIA said they can't cover me with my tourist visa; need work permit and non-imi.

  5. "Thai Life" or "AIA" IMO they are okay if you live here really. They'll send you first for a check in a hospital about HIV/AIDS or sugar... and you'll need maybe one year extension or something like that (residence permit in my case). The first 4 months (for sickness only so by AIA) they'll not pay if you're sick. They want to be sure you are not really sick before. All the contract papers are writing in Thai script also your name on the card's. So this is in my case the premier card. Maybe they have other options also.

I have only this insurance because I was emigrated. I have no insurance in my home country. So it was important to have a good insurance for me when I live here in LOS.

Does anyone know of an Insurance company that does not require work permit or non-imi visa status? I come to LOS on 30 day entry stamp basis every other months and looking for a good health insurance. Got an accident coverage only from AIG. Thanks for any advise.

  6. i am being stupid cos i really don't understand why you have quoted firefan?

no you're not; my apologies, I was in the middle of reading fireman's post at the same time posting new topic and somehow i copied that into my post. But I'm not stupid :o just make mistakes sometimes.

  7. Don't think related to that. Note I am only talking a symbolic payment in case of death/handicapped. It does not refer to the general health treatment.

AS to geneal health treatment Thaihealth does, as far as I have been able to deduct, cover HIV related sickness. Unlike BUPA they do not specifically EXCLUDE HIV/Aids related sickness. They DO have the almost standard disclaimer/no-pay for STDs (as does BUPA) but normally hiv/aids related illness is considered seperately, probably due to the multiple ways one can become a victim to that (blood transfusion Etc.).

    Cheers!

I would appreciate all experience and advise in regards to schools for a Thai/US child from the age of 2 on. I'm interested in both international with English as primary language as well as those teaching in Thai with English and/or other languages as a second. Costs, academic level, children safety and locations information would be much appreciated, as well as parents experiences with dealing with schools' owners, teachers etc. Also, what is the semestral system, holidays schedule etc.? Anyone can help or point me to any topics that had already explored the subject.

    THank you

  8. I have had one for about two years and really really like it. I have had hundreds of motorcycles over 30 years and this one is pretty high on the list especially for driving in Thailand.

Large frame and lightweight makes for decent comfort and easy handling at slow speeds. Its a honda, with minimal maintenance it has proven exceptionally reliable. Drive it up into the mountains around Chiang Mai every year, lots of shifting but never had to push it over a peak yet.

Easy on gas, easy and cheap to service, good cruising, just fine for splitting lanes in Bangkok, it is an excellent compromise.

The gearbox is pure junk, feels like shifting a bag full of marbles. Misses gears alot, could use better rear shocks than the 240 baht standard equipment. The OEM tires and brakes are junk too, the bike performs much better when these are replaced with quality components.

This year I think I will punch mine out to 250cc, thats what they were originally designed as in Japan, our Thai Phantoms are undersized to comply with regulations. The 250cc kit is just pistons and rebore, easy and makes a big differance.

Great bike, great choice, you will enjoy it with few problems and have something to resell easily when your done.

i have a Phantom too. I like it just fine but it's a little underpowered for the hills in Phuket.

Where do you get the 250cc kit?

  9. Not a mention of even one gratuitious grope from that report skb, and in over 30 years of flying with Thai and well over a million air miles I have never once seen anybody act improperly towards inflight staff. Maybe I just get all the wrong planes. :o

Same Here, I've been traveling 8 - 10 times a year long haul trip and not that I patrol a plane during 11 hours flight but I would've known had any harrasment been going on on a flight.

  10. Sometimes I think that people don't give Isaan credit for the beauty it contains. Sure, a lot of it is flat and agricultural, but it has some great beauty and fascinating cultural artifacts. Well worth a visit.

    Agreed,

I have always liked Issan, for many different reasons.

    Visited many times.

Starting to build a house there this year and when I retire I will

take off from there on exploration trips.

    Looking forward to it.

    Where are you building, Bullit?

I bought a piece of land in Chanuman, about 40 km south of Mukdahan right on the riverfront. will start building in about a year. I'm the only farang there as far as I know.

  11. Children, please!

Being a long-time resident of northern Minnesota and now Wisconsin, I'm familiar with the hazards of cool temps and exposure to them.  The snow arrives here in early November and stays until the end of March.  Did a bit of winter camping myself back when I was young and foolish.

Hypothermia certainly doesn't require freezing temperatures to occur.  All it really refers to actually is that heat is carried away from the body faster than your body can produce it.  Exposed skin in a temp of 40-50 degrees F can be just as deadly.  If your body can not keep pace with this heat loss, your core body temperature starts dropping and crazy stuff starts to happen.  Your body reacts by restricting blood flow to the extremities and your head is an extremity in the eye of your body.  Confusion and mild temporary dementia is the worst part.  You can't think clearly as your brain temp drops into the low 90's and by the time your core body temp reaches the low to mid-80's body functions start failing.  You can do the math, but with low single digits C it would be approximately 40 degrees F.  If he was wet or had light clothing with exposed skin, it could easily be deadly over night.

Don't mean to sound disrespectful and my sympathies are with his family.

    ~WISteve

You are exactly right. Ihad lived and sailed the SanFrancisco Bay for many years. THe water in the Bay and outside the Golden Gate is 50 -55 F all year around (lot higher than freezing 32). Coast Guard official stats are that the people who fall off the watercraft and are not retrieved die from hypothermia within 20 min. on average. The idividual figures vary from person to person i.e. physical build and fitness, weight and... you guessd it, blood alcohol content has an adverse effect. Of course there is an important factor: when you are in the water, the body heat loss rate is a lot higher. In the air surroundings the ave. 20 mins. become more like a whole night. Anyway, my condolences to close ones of the Swede.

  12. I have the same problem with my GF. Have you decided yet who to go to with your GF?

Not yet... lets stay in touch regading this.

My GF went to Phuket Bangkok International hospital. THey did smoe tests on her skin (800 bht) and told her that her skinis very sensitive to scarring and that the treatment would have to be done very slowly in several sessions.

4 - 5 sessions would do but each one costs 35,000 bht.

Expensive...She said she doesn't want to do it, let's buy some land in her country instead. Well I still want to research some more maybe BKK would be cheaper.

    Will appreciate any clues.

  13. Laser tatoo removal in BKK. Readily available? Safe? How effective is it?

Does it leave scar tissue at all? Paeng mai :o

Reason I ask is the tatoo in question is right in the middle of the chest and looks bloody aweful if she wears a low cut dress. If it was removed, even the slightest scarring would probably be just as bad as the tatoo itself.

I have the same problem with my GF. Have you decided yet who to go to with your GF?

  14. My GF has this awfull tattoo right on her chest, and I want her to remove it.

I heard that Bangkok hospital in Phyket has a good Dermatology Dept. that does the procedure.

DOes anyone have any other recomendations?

    THanks

  15. Does anybody know what documents one needs to obtain thai drivers licence?

I have a american DL, I understand it needs to be translated and notarized by embassy staff, doctors certificate and 2 photo's. Anything else?

The regulations say you must have Non imi visa but I heard of my friend frech husband who got away with a tourist visa few years back.

  16. Has anyone tried to get a thai drivers licence on tourist visa?

I was told in one of the licence departments that I'd qualify for one with the usual forms i.e. original DL translation notarized by my embassy, health cert., and address proof. That after my passport and the tourist visa in it had been looked at.

  17. Rules against dual citizenship still apply to some extent to people who wish to become US citizens via naturalization. The Supreme Court chose to leave in place the requirement that new citizens must renounce their old citizenship during US naturalization. However, in practice, the State Department is no longer doing anything in the vast majority of situations where a new citizen's "old country" refuses to recognize the US renunciation.

The above is taken from the richw.org website.

    Ah, vindication is sweet :o:D

Now then, Smokin, before you go off on another unsubstantiated rant, this is your arse and this is your elbow.

    Scouse.

I am a naturalized US citizen. THere as no requirement of renouncing my second citizenship at teh time I become as US nat. By the way, look into your US passport, whoever has one; on the page 3 there is a statement regarding dual citizens (!) situation while visiting your other country.

  18. I will be travelling to Phuket soon.

Looking for a dentist to get a couple of fillings and teeth cleaning session. Does anyone have recommendations for a Patong Beach or the area?

I am also planning on getting an implant. Any suggestions for a good clinic, surgeon?
