  1. Thoongfoned, excellent info!

We have 7 rai that produced 42 bags without. Chemical fertilizer, 6 per rai is poor. Soil is very poor and the weather is blamed for most things - as it is every year.

We have to pay for all labour as there are no family members to help out - 400 baht/day without food. We also need to hire tractor.

    Total cost is around 13baht/kg.

I think you are wise and I will not be financing a rice crop next year.

  2. An interesting thread. Thailand reminds me of the UK of my youth when most of my friends smoked and you could cut the air in the pub with a knife..... Of course those men have now retired to Thailand and continue to smoke just the same in bars and restaurants - it's almost impossible to get a smoke free breakfast in Udon, Sakon, or Nong Khai........

  3. A few points to consider.

It's traditional for grandparents to do the bulk of child rearing - that cannot help with discipline as grandparents are generally petty soft or probably too tired to keep on top of the youngsters.

I believe Thai parents see their responsibility to the extended family, not simply to their children.

Many parents, sometimes both, sometimes one, are working away from home and will see their children once or twice a year; not a good situation in which to teach values to a child

The lack of education does not help and, from what I've seen, schools do not help form rounded adults from their intake.
But then again, neither do many UK schools.

Did we in the UK happily wear helmets or seatbelts when the law was changed given overwhelming medical evidence of the benefits? No we didn't.

Similarly, why do we still smoke when we know it kills us?
