  1. Its probably better in the long term getting his English reading skills up to par. Sure there are translated version of CSS3 for Dummies etc.. but all the books I consider 'gold' in that area I've not seen in the Thai bookstores. In addition all the blogs and design sites alistapart etc.. that you'll need are written in English. And of course YUI/youtube/vimeo - most of the screencasts are english too.

For Javascript all you need is Crockford JS series (free on YUI theatre) and for deeper understand Javascript - The Good Parts book.

For CSS, the W3C 2.1 Spec (free pdf/word doc) I find the most conclusive.

  2. I am having problems with Yahoo for the last few days. that' the only overseas site I basically use.

dont you use Thaivisa Roo, thats an overseas site , server is based in Singapore ( not Thailand )

The past few weeks 3BB and TOT have gone very strange. I found I was able to traceroute to bbc.co.uk in 4 hops on 3BB, so theres obviously something intercepting traffic at 3BB. Remote desktop has crawled to halt. Most web pages are okay, but stuff like youtube seems problematic, videos on vimeo.com continously buffer. It looks like CAT may be the only sane solution once again - a shame as 3BB were really improving as much as a month ago. Even stuff like overplay.net VPNs that I use are disconnecting frequently.

As for DNS always use 8.8.8.8 (google's public DNS) or opendns. As for thaivisa hosting in singapore, routes to singapore used to perfect, think sub 100ms pings and max bandwidth on stuff like 3BB Indy / TOT. That's all gone now. I use to route my browsing through a VPS in Singapore (route to singapore and then international from singapore a grade), no longer possible with any reasonable speed (unless maybe with CAT).

I have a feeling that they system they were using to throttle torrents a few months ago (experimentally) are being more liberally applied and possibly in the process of being tweaked, so there may be some light at the end of tunnel, if they get it right.

  3. ...bought a few months ago a nice Dell laptop there incl. orig. Windows 2007 Home, but the assortment of screens is rather disappointing.

That's because there is no Windows 2007 Home. You got one those super messed up copies. I can see your CC details as you type ;) just kiddin..

Get a genuine copy of Windows, with a genuine product key, active it without a crack, dont use a keygen or blacklisted (or soon to be revoked serial) as you'll have endless problems months or at best a year from now. Its just not worth the hassle, for example Windows Home Premium 7 has everything you need for less than 5000 baht and will be good for at least 5 years (less than 100 baht a month).

  4. If you want a good PC you build it yourself or let them do it with the best A quality parts you selected.

hmm... I disagree. I used to build my own PCs (its not hard, too be honest its easier than lego) but its a false economy has been since the millennium. If you take Dell, HP, Lenovo the combinations of components are tested to work, by tested I mean thoroughly - they dont want returns, the closest you can get is 48hrs burn in on your own hardware. The amount of shit PCs that have loose MB connections, overheating graphic cards, overheating CPUs, incompatible memory, loud fans (the most common). I am not saying it cant be done but by the time you've done your own testing, purchased a decent case (that doesnt look like a toy with neon lights) and a decent fan that doesnt sound like a 747 youll find it costs more than an offshelf job. Yes I accept HP etc.. use lower end Foxconn mobos, but I cant hear my PC, it can run for weeks no problem, and I make more than 20baht per day so Id rather not piss about with PC lego.

  5. combined ferry and mini bus ticket to haad yai is around 450 ba

Last time I did this it was normal bus (not uncomfortable but not VIP or a minibus) and bus stopped at main bus stop at Had Yai only, bus was slow got there around 5.30 if I remember correctly after leaving at 9.30am, onward travel motorbike taxis, did I miss or is there a faster mini bus to Hat Yai?

  6. I've heard various prices from 500 to 5000 a month for different magazines and publications, there are probably dozens now, I forget the names of them all. As for calculating return on investment, its a little difficult, unless you can squeeze the referral out of the customer - difficult as may have been referred again by a tour op or the accumulation of seeing several ads enforcing brand etc.. you need to get an idea for the number.

Talk to them, each publication should have a telephone number or at least an email, ask for their distribution numbers and what they've done to realistically verify them, then do some of your own homework:

    e.g.

If they say everyone arriving at Samui airport gets a copy, go down in the afternoon and see how many of punters getting into taxis/minibuses are holding a copy..

If they say distributed to all bars in Lamai, Chaweng etc.. go and see in the day time, are they well displayed, take a pen and mark the top copy discretely with a pen, return it, see how it takes to shift, will it still be there when you return?

Include a voucher so you can do some referral tracking yourself.

Even if there is carrier level point 2 point tunneling (e.g. some CDNs do some magic like this) I dont think it should look like this

  8. A tracert (not traceroute)

Well it does depend on what OS you use, most will call it the correct term of traceroute since they aren't carrying the baggage from 8 character max filenames from ye old days :D

BBC.co.uk works okay, tracert/traceroute displays as expected, if someone on 3BB can PM me I'd like to give a few IPs to test.

  9. If you have pulled it off in any other country then you should have a chance here, but it wont be a free pass. You then have to choose where to compete, locally or online, the first you'll need to develop connections, the latter you're competing globally (think PPC, market adjust rates etc..).

Also you have to make sure you are actually able to do the job, unfortunately most web designers here are no more than click-a-button-on-cpanel-throw-up-a-joomla-theme voila "im a designer". Same for IT repair, a lot of people here fix PCs because they were able to remove a virus from their dad's PC or managed to get some cert, here a great saying the other day.. "A Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer is to computing what a McDonalds Certified Food Specialist is to fine cuisine".

  10. Just buy a few receipt books from Tesco / Big C, maybe 7/11 sell them. Or possible just offer the taxi driver 100 baht for what remains of his receipt book. Im not suggesting you fraudulently claim against your employer, but there will be items (bars etc..) which wont let you keep the checkbin, and accounting departments are usually anal about having receipts, using your own receipt book is just filling in the gaps... It worked great when outsourced in India ;)

  11. Doesnt the temple provide sanctuary for people that have fell through the net (i.e. no family to support them)? Id say a donation (or dropping food off with the monks) probably benefits them more.

So one argument suggests that by not giving money eventually these beggars may be better off or future generations will be spared.

I'd say if you avoid the chaweng beggars that have been placed there by organized families/gangs then they wouldnt be exploited, as to who supports them I guessing temples, point being that this cant be the only way for their survival?

  12. Point taken. No offence to mods, wrong target of frustration (chang hangover doesnt help). It is to say the least just annoying that they are still at large after so long. The thais are at now too, one guy in bangrak going around the bars day time last Friday with a scruffy piece of paper as a price list e.g. 1000baht wheelchairs, I went ballistic at them the other day before someone pointed he could probably knock two tons of crap out me.

  13. Watch the new Toyota trucks picking them up at 4am.... Yeah the beggars obviously get basic survival money/food out of it, but they certainly dont get to keep it, it goes to scum who wants to get latest Toyota mods etc... Dont take it out on the beggar though, like someone said a bottle of water or an issan sausage probably goes further.

Charity/begging in Samui is probably more organized than it is in Cambodia (think each lucky beggar has a pitch and turf is thought like drug wars). The connect four kids and girls selling beads at 2am (all same family i belive) should be avoided to, nice new motorbikes and trucks, frequently see the family at the BBQ near bangkok hospital.

Giving money in both cases is probably the worst thing you can do.

  14. Actually thinking about it, taxis from both Manchester airport and London airport are ridiculously expensive. 13 quid to Premier Inn on the perimeter of the airport example. Perhaps bangkok airport is the exception rather than the norm. Manchester airport fixed price to destination but super expensive. Not defending samui taxis as they are rip off outside airports too, but just accepted that airport travel is expensive both flying and to/from
