  1. In my opinion 2 panes of glass doesn't make sense if they are not sealed like in the west.

Instead of double roof, I would suggest to put sound insulation on your ceiling.

I have been told in the past that 2 panes (or more) IS the solution ....The first to dampen the sound wave and the second to stop it. Most sealed double pane windows in the west are obviously better than single pane but in order to stop sound you need "mass" or an irregular surface (to deflect the sound wave).

Just what I've been told ....but do appreciate your input

    Thanks

A close friend of mine built his own recording studio, which require superior sound insulation. The glass window from the control booth looking into the main studio is huge double glass, 4' x 8'. And you are correct about your statement concerning irregular surfaces. To create an irregular surface with two exactly similar pieces of glass, the common practice is to angle one piece, say 3-5 degrees. (i don't know the exact angle) so it would take a lot of custom installation work in a house but seems like you are willing to invest the effort? Visiting audio recording websites are full of info concerning sound dampening.

  2. It's actually very simple. The best option (if time allows for OP) is to buy in America an unlocked GSM iPhone (whatever flavor C or S) It will be a couple hundred $s less than in Thailand. An unlocked GSM iPhone will work anywhere in the world, and especially in Thailand. Once you arrive here, just roll into any 7-11 or phone shop and buy a micro SIM card and you are good to go.

  3. I am really struggling to make sense out of this part. Can some one explain it to me.

"This level of production would consume about 180 tonnes of carbon dioxide per day, or about 10 per cent of the total CO2 produced by the power plant, which means the project would reduce CO2 emission in the near future."

If 190 tonnes a day is 10% of what it produces that would mean there is 1,620 tonnes a day going into the atmosphere. How is that helping to reduce the carbon emission? Seems to me it would be adding to it. to reduce it they would have to use more than they produce.

They left out a common feature of algae farms, they are often built next to coal burning electric plants. The carbon dioxide from the coal burning is fed into the algae farm where it's consumed by alagae. So the 10% reductioni in carbon dioxide mentioned in the article probably refers to the coal powered plant's daily carbon dioxide

  4. Hello, I've been to Bumrungrad a year ago to X-ray my hips. The doctor what pretty useless as far as a diagnosis of what's causing my pain. It has now become chronic and need to find a good hip doctor.

    Any first hand recommendations?

I live in Pattaya but will travel to BKK for someone who knows what they are doing.

    Thanks everyone, T

  5. I just returned to TH last Friday from a successful Non Immigrant B multiple entry visa run to Honolulu, HI. Before I left, I used Sunbelt Asia here in TH to help with the required papers (10,700 THB) and the visa application. This will take a day or two after meeting with a legal advisor at Sunbelt Asia.

It is a good idea to contact the the Royal Thai Consulate of Hawaii before you make the trip. The woman running the consulate is named Micky. I never saw her but was in contact with her via email, phone and SMS. She prefers you call her first to sort out the details, when you will arrive. Her number is +1808.218.8803. A $200 money order made out to the Royal Thai Consulate General is required which can be purchased at Wallmart, 7-11s, or easiest the Post Office which is walking distance from the Airport (if you arrive in HI during operating hours). 2 or 3 days after you drop off the paper work and money order (the assistant also said I could hand over the money order when i picked up the visa) you then call Mickey to set up a time to pick up the visa.

Here's a list of required docs via email from Micky:

Documents required: passport must valid at lease 18 months, application form attached with 2 passport photos (2"x2" not copies, real photo with white background), recommendation letter from business related (provided for me via Sunbelt Asia 10,700 THB), copy of latest bank statement, $200 money order payable to Royal Thai Consulate General for visa fee.
The new location is definitely here, 1035 Kikowaena Place, Honolulu, HI 96819. View it in Google Maps http://bit.ly/WgR742
The best email address to reach Micky is [email protected]
Be sure to give yourself 5 business days not including holidays. Mine took 4 but seeing how things are run there, give yourself 5 or maybe few more. HI is incredibly beautiful so the longer you stay the more you get to enjoy the incredible beaches, surf and other sites.
Good luck on your visa run, Todd
  6. According to Index Mundi, it looks like the world commodity price for 5 percent broken milled white rice, per Metric Ton for the last three months has been around 17,100 THB. http://www.indexmundi.com/commodities/?commodity=rice&months=60&currency=thb

The article states the Chinese are going to pay about 32,500 THB per ton, almost double the going rate. Please let the Chinese purchasing agents know that I have some condos I would like to sell them.

  7. Hello,

My first thought: did you buy an official carrier "unlocked" phone? These phones are the only way to go for people who want to use them in several countries. You would also want to make sure it is a GSM phone since the vast majority of networks around the world are GSM. if your phone has a SIM card, it is GSM. Yes to both questions? then lets move on to the answer of your question..

Simple answer, the GSM iPhone 5 only shows the data Network available to the phone. You phone can only connect to 4G, LTE data networks if the carrier provides it.

The iPhone 5 (as all iPhones ) shows in the upper left corner of the screen which carrier and what kind of data network the phone is currently using. There is a 0-5 bar symbol for signal strength, followed by the name of the carrier, and next to that, the type of data network which can be nothing, GPRS, EDGE, 3G, 4g, LTE or WiFi. Since I am a True-H subscriber, my iPhone shows 5 bars signal strength (not always 5 bars), followed by the text "True-H", and the type of data network I am connected to which is 3G. It would show 4G or LTE if that type of data network was available here in Thailand, but unfortunately it is not. When I am at home, the type of data network automatically switches to WiFi and I can tell by the WiFi logo instead of 3G text.

The iPhone automatically switches the the best data network available to your phone in that geographic area. When I travel, my phone will switch from 3G when available and down to GPRS or EDGE (where 3G coverage is not available) and to blank when no data network is available (when traveling in more remote areas of Thailand). In this situation I might still have a carrier signal and can still make and receive phone calls, I just can not access the internet via the a data network. When I get home it automatically switches to my WiFi network (after you sign in the first time ). It phone deals with the tasks of seeing what is available and switches to the best option available so you don't have to.

    Cheers

  8. The problem is how do you find out what is selling and for what?

That's simple: you can't. I've long believed that an official database report of property sales/prices from Land Offices as is available in many developed countries would make fascinating reading here.

Even if it was available to the public, the information would be useless. Most sale prices on the second hand market are report far below the actual amount to avoid taxes. For example, a unit is sold for 5 million, but report to the land department as sold for 3 million and now only have to pay taxes on the 3 million. I am not say this is right. It is just what I have come across in conversations and real estate dealings.

A Zillow or Trulia for Thailand would be so useful for sellers and buyers but where would they get the real info needed to build a database of actual sales prices?

  9. Steel Joe, as previously mentioned, they are called fixed gear, meaning they only have one gear. They are also called "fixies". True fixed gear bicycles setups are patterned on the track racing bikes. They are single gear and have no brakes (prevents pile ups while racing on the bank oval tracks which would surely happen at high speeds with several bikes tailgating within inches of each other. Imagine if the leader slammed on hand brake for whatever reason.) The hubs are not freewheel. The cranks are fixed to the back wheel via the chain. Freewheel drive trains allow the cranks to remain stationary while the bike is in motion and are much easier to ride. Fixed gear cranks are constantly spinning when the bike is in motion. To slow down a fixed gear bike, the rider needs to add resistance to the spinning cranks. The bike rider can not stop pedalling, even when flying down hill. This method braking is tricky to learn, especially if your son used to a bike with a freewheel drivetrain (the vast majority of bikes). The other method of slowing down is to bunny hop the bike into a power slide. This take lots of practice. Both these skills need to be perfected before any riding on public roads.

A good option is to not buy a pure fixie bike but a sort of hybrid fixie that looks exactly the same but includes a rear freewheel hub. It is still single gear. It will also include a single handbrake or better yet, two hand brakes, one for the front wheel and one for the back wheel. I highly recommend looking for one with a "flip flop" rear hub. These hubs have two cogs on the rear hub, one on each side. One cog is freewheel, the other cog is fixed. This way you can change the bike from fixed gear to freewheel just by removing the rear wheel and flipping it around when desired or vice versa.

True fixies do not have have brakes but get one with at least a front handbrake. No need to be a purist. If I was buying for a kid, I would buy a fixed gear with the filp flop hub and front and rear handbrakes.

In Pattaya, I have seen cheap versions in shops for around 7,000-8,000 THB.

    Ride on!, Todd

  10. Hello, I am setting up a small bike workshop. When I say small, I mean just me. I will be building bike frames and I need quality power tools that can handle every day use. I am looking for the following items; chop saw, power file, drill press, tube notcher, a small lathe, battery powered drill, a big vise etc.

I live near Pattaya but will travel to BKK if necessary. Ofcourse I am familiar with Home Pro and similar, but there must be a place where the pro's go?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Cheers, Todd

  11. Hello All,

I've been a Truevision customer for many years. Truevisions audio has always and is still out of sync with the video. I was hoping the recent upgrade to the new encoding format MPEG-4 would help but it is still, just as bad as before. The audio is delayed so there is nothing I can do in the SETUP page. The only option available to adjust is to delay audio more which is the exact opposite of what I require. What is needed is a way to delay the visual or move the audio forward.

I don't see True ever fixing this in their broadcast. Quality control is lacking.

So, I was wondering if any AV gear heads out there know of a device I could buy that would allow me to adjust the video to properly sync with the audio?

    Thanks, TR

  12. Hello All,

3bb customer support is useless and will not help me connect my Mac to their service. She said they do not support Macs.

I am a former True ADSL subscriber and have connected several macs successfully. I recently moved and no longer can use True so I chose 3bb. My 3bb line was installed a few days ago. 3bb says they can see my ADSL router online. The install crew (why do they always need 2 or more guys?) successfully connected their Windows laptop during install. I should have asked them to configure my Mac, but I mistakingly thought it would be as easy as True. I was wrong.

True uses PPPoE just like 3bb. A user name and password was all I thought what was needed (like I did with True) but I have not yet successfully connected to the internet. I have tried everything I can think of and I am now asking the Mac users on Thaivisa for help.

Are there any Mac 3bb customers out there who can help a fellow Mac user get online?

I am using a Macbook, OS 10.5.8. In System Preferences, I set up a new ethernet connection, connecting directly to the ADSL modem/router. The modem/router ADSL "link" light is a solid orange which means its has successfully connected. The LAN "link" light is a solid orange which means My Mac is successfully connected to the modem/router at 100Mbit/s. When I try to connect I recieve the error message from Internet Connect, "Could not find a PPPoE server".

Any ideas? Thanks for any insights you can provide

  13. Try this Thai company, Wheatgrass Bangkok. Just combine the names and add .com for their website.

You can have flats or packages of wheatgrass delivered in the Bangkok area.

I purchased their plastic hand crank juicer for THB 1,500 and I am surprisingly happy with it. I would recommend it but go for a stainless steel if you can find one.

I recommend a hand crank juicer over an electric juicer unless you are doing tons of juicing every day.

I have been buying my wheatgrass flats and packages from Wheatgrass Bangkok but feel its a bit overpriced. I am trying to find a source of wheatberry, the seeds for wheatgrass so that I can grow it on my own. Very easy and worth the little effort if you are juicing everyday.

Please PM me if you know of a source in Thailand for wheatberry, the seeds to grow wheatgrass.
