  1. Sorry I can't translate something that complex but I can tell you that Thai isn't written with spaces, well at least the words arn't separted with spaces. Usually sentances are separated by spaces though.

Just out of interest, why are you getting something tattooed in Thai when you can't read it yourself?

You might also want to say wether you want a literal translation or maybe a more poetic lose translation.

  2. But what if they tried to force him to land, but they refused to land? Could they really shoot him down? How good would that look?

Be a major lose of face wouldn't it? If they tried to force him down but he just kept flying, knowing that if they shot him down they would probably have an even bigger problem on their hands.

  3. Is this sort of what your looking for?

    http://www.thai-language.com/id/590098

Its not perfect and you would have to get rid of the extra words in the peom. Or maybe you could just learn the poem.

But it has the transliterations there with the tones.

Just copy and paste it into a word doc and rearrange it how you like and print it.

Note I only spent a couple of minutes looking, so there are probably better resources, this was just all I could find.

  4. Freddy123 is wrong in his post. Some European countries also require you to leave your passport with them when you rent a car.

I was talking about renting a motorbike, after all this is what the thread is about is it not? I was also talking about asia in general, not europe, I would have a bit more confidence giving someone my passport in most parts of europe (mainly becuase they usually have a police force that does its job to some degree)

  5. Yeah, if they don't accept a copy just go somewhere else. Always keep your passport, its only in the communist countries that want your passports.

Try Mr Mechanic, I left a copy with them plus a 3000 Baht deposit. Just make sure you get the deposit recorded somewhere on your receipt. There are places that accept just a passport copy, but they were all out of bikes when I went there.

  6. The leakings been stopped. Why the Australian goverment let Thai companies operate in our waters is rediculas. The 'engineer' that probably designed the structure probably graduated from some Thai uni with a degree equivalent to a year 10 school certificate in Australia. They better start cleaning it up and if needed compensating the fishing and other comunities affected.

Personally I see your statement as ignorant.

I am Australian also. I have run a number of companies in Thailand, both local and westerner owned. To ask why the Australian government let's Thai companies operate in Australian waters and your assumption the West Atlus rig was exclusively Thai designed is purely idiotic, probably much like the author. Nothing could be further from the truth, so before you ramble rubbish again take a look at the facts, a couple I have provided you here with 2 minutes research.

    • The West Atlas platform is a drilling rig.
    • It was built by Keppel FELS in Singapore. The Group, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Corporation, was established in 2002 and is headquartered in Singapore. Its strategic network of 20 yards serving regions including Asia Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, Caspian Sea, Middle East and the North Sea, enables the effective execution of the Group's Near Market, Near Customer strategy.
    • Seadrill of Norway operate the rig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • The Montara platform was built in 2008, and was installed in mid-2009 by Perth, Australia-based engineering company Clough by Australian engineers!

I run companies because of my skill sets, fluent in Thai, western in nature. I don't know the workforce breakdown on the rig, but I can guarantee you there were numerous Australian's working there, and there Health and Safety Officers and a bunch of engineers and operations staff are Australian.....

Thanks jayjayjayjay for pointing out my stupid error. I apoligise for my comment about the engineer, just having a bad morning I think. I've been recently getting fustrated at the lack of quality education over here especially at the university level and managed to find a way to combine 2 fustrations when it obviously wasn't needed. (That being the oil leaking for weeks and weeks and the thai education system.)

Well at least its stopped now and I hope the equiry will reduce the risks of something like this happening again.

  8. I have a question for the 3G subscribers; (maybe a dumb question, sorry). From the brochure it seems like we choose how much digital information we think we

will need to download in a month period. (From 500 MB at B100, to 30 GB at B1500) Am I understanding this correctly?

    Correct

Would'nt streaming video use up your

Gigs pretty fast? If I'm understanding it correctly once you exceed your allowance they charge you B1 per Megabyte downloaded? Not including vat either...

I think you just get cut off when you exceed your allowance. Becuase they don't take your credit card number or anything. It seems to be just prepaid, just like a normal phone sim card. I started with a 3gb a month but had to change after about 2 weeks cause I had used the 3gb up. I changed to the 15gb for 900b.

Is it just me or does this seem a very strange method seeing as the other so called Broadband suppliers have no limit on downloads?

Would'nt a streaming video left on all night (for example if you fell asleep and forgot to close the connection) easily exceed 10 or 20 gigs in a single night?

I definitely could be misunderstanding this, so please feel free to correct me....Thank you.

Im pretty sure most decent suppliers have limits, if they don't then I would be pretty sceptical about their level of service. Having a limit allows them to accurately purchase their bandwidth in advance. And stops people from just downloading movies all day slowing everyone else down, and costing the company alot of money.

BTW I had my first 1 hour of downtime last night. It just wouldn't connect for some reason. I didn't ring them up or anything, it just fixed itself after about an hour.

  9. Depends on how accurate it is, I think they are probably getting pretty good nowdays but they used to have problems when people had been sweating heavily or had been swimming recently. That can be solved by having a pin number aswell as a backup.

The place to put your finger could get pretty dirty and slimy if it isn't maintained very well.

I prefer the RFID cards, they fit nicely in your wallet, and if the reader is installed at pocket height its not much different to the fingerprint reader. My apartments have it so that you have to swipe your card on the way out aswell, which is good cause it means I can't leave the building without my wallet. (It also has an emergency button incase your trapped)

Also the whole not having to carry keys is a bit stupid atm, until your motorbike/car/office/postbox/garage has biometrics installed your still going to be carrying a set of keys anyway.

  10. If they were even a quarter serious about making a dent in the pirate industry. They would at least stop the shops that operate in big legit shopping centres, I mean when you go to Tesco or Airport plaza, start putting pressure on the owners of these big places to stop providing a place for businesses that solely exist to sell pirated software/dvds. But I assume that the people that own those big places are big enough to provide the appriate tea money to continue operating as normal (or the laws provide them protection.)

Also they should at least target big places that are trying to be legit, eg B2B? (The big book shop in robinson at airport) and stop them selling a mixture of legit and pirated software.

As for the pricing, I agree the software companies should start providing local pricing. But in the meantime if you can't afford the prices listed. There is alot of quality free software to use.

eg If you like photoshop, gimp is a pretty much exactly the same but free.

  11. I went to the french guy a couple of weeks ago looking to rent another bike, they didn't have any on either occasion i went. I don't think they do insurance there. But they don't require a deposit of passport, just a passport copy.

I ended up just going to Mr Mechanic and getting a 100cc bike for 2000. I got a nice looking well maintained but old honda dream. It doesn't have any guts and is a bit noisy but does the job perfectly. Even has an electric starter. And I doubt that anyone is going to bother to steal it which is also a benefit. They tried to keep my passport at Mr M but I told them I was in love with it and so they accepted a copy of it and 3000b deposit (make sure you get the proper receipts for that, they made a note on their sheet of paper about the deposit, and I had to ask specifically to get the same marks made on mine, I think it was an honest mistake though).

I have opted in for the 500b extra insurance, just to see if it makes me feel safer (i don't usually buy it), and it does somewhat but I still have to pay 10,000B if the bike is stolen which is probably well over the actual value of the bike. I think the small amount for medical if you have an accident is more comforting for me. If it breaks down there is meant to be some sort of service you can ring aswell that will come and help you, but its probably easier to just push it to the mechanic shop that you most likely broke down in front of.

  12. Maybe they could increase the prices of the rooms by 49% to make up for the 49% drop in tourists this year. Sure would be a good way to met tonights break even point. :)

If they were serious about attracting tourists, they would do something drastic like offering some free seats on AirAsia / Nok /Thai flights to and from Bangkok for people travelling on 30 day tourist visas only (and havn't been to thailand before). But of course that would require someone somewhere to make a decision and to actually do some work.

BTW does Chiang Mai have a tourist operators committee/group/organisation? Someone other that the TAT that might actually have some incentive to start promoting CM to tourists?

  13. If someone asked your name in English would you reply "I'm Mr Stephen" ? I certainly don't and if I heard it I would probably finish the conversation right there and then (unless they were a teacher and I was a student).

As far as my minimal experience goes with the Thai langauge, I have always found Khun can be pretty much a directly translated to the Mr in english.

Ie use it when refering to a person you don't really know, or a person in a higher position that you (ie Teacher, but pee and other words seemed to be used more for this.).

If your names hard to say, why not just make up a nickname? How about 'nok' seems as good as any.

    Good luck Mr Nok :)

  14. Maybe before eveyone starts buying these things, you should wait for a few other people to say that they have had the same experience as I have. Maybe my experience and speeds are a fluke or something. Anyway I don't want to be responsible for people buying these the USB stick and then finding out they arn't getting the same speeds as me or something. Or maybe if everyone buys one the service will slow down to normal thai speeds? If that is the case then please stay and suffer with your current provider while we enjoy normal speeds :)

  15. I doubt it will work, I think I read somewhere that they dont use the standard 3g frequencies that other countries do. Do some research maybe but even if it was compatible I doubt they would give up the chance at charging you the 4000 baht anyway.

Any others yould like tested? While running through these I did hit a bit of a network slowdown and orginally got .5mbs for Florida, but ran it again 2 mins later and got higher.

In terms of reliability, I can only say that I have had no downtime that I have noticed in about 3-4 weeks of use, I use alot of internet so I usually notice downtimes.

  17. Just buy a new one from the apple store thailand. If you second hand one breaks down then it will probably end up costing the same as a new one anyway. I don't recommend buying through the local resellers, its the same price as online usually, but it just goes through the hands of local thai people instead of coming direct from singapore via dhl (Apple already pays customs or whatever).

Though if you buy from the apple store, you can't claim the VAT back, becuase they arn't registered in the tourist program.

The Windows 7 copies arn't dodgey atm, they are a pre relase/beta version of Windows 7. And a whole lot more stable that Vista.
