  1. Always be a place of good food pirated goods, and steaming nightlife. Not every country has to be an economic or intellectual success. Sure the other ASEAN countries know what's up. But you can always wave the big number one finger. "Some people are so far behind in a race, that when they look up they think they are in first."

  2. Songkran once was a fine festival. It "was" fun. Now there is a vindictiveness about it. Maybe aggressive is the better word. Is Song ran about getting drunk and trying to knock people off their motor bikes with water? That's what its become. That's what we complain about. 3 days of this sucks. 7 like in Chiang mail is shit.

  3. It's not just the fires, nor the ample amount of petro exhaust. Granted, when your at ground zero, Chiang mai has enough of this. But our problem gets severe when the warm weather comes in. Normally, all the horrid pollution that this city produces will still rise into the atmosphere at various levels, winds, etc. However during warm weather we get an inverse condition greatly added by the fires burning at higher elevations. Chiang mai is actually in a valley. The air above is then warmer than below (inverse condition). This interferes with the dissipation of the crap normally created here.

  4. It depends on how much it affects you. An entire can rule of physical pathology and after that very few know what to do. In my case it almost destroyed me 13 years ago. For some people it is a mild annoyance. You can't compare your suffering g to others. I'm from the USA. Of great help was the. American Tinnitus Association. They are on the net. I did a treatment called tinnitus retraining therapy which helped immensely. Best wishes my friend.

  5. Hmmmmm. I always hear: "Oh oh don't go the Philippines. its so safe here!" Ha. And I live here in Chiang Mai, but just another strike for the hometeam....

About 6 months ago, I was filling the bike at the gas staion past Loi kroh Rd, near the DK Bookstore. 2 Thai teens, 16 - 18 yrs. old in their school clothes, (A technical college is nearby), were fighting. Or actually 1 was kicking the other ones skull apart. I dont use this lightly... one was near unconscious, barley moving, and the other was punching and kicking the kid in the head. The victim had blood pouring out of his eyes. Anyway, all the Thais just watched it. 2 Tuk tuk drivers, a couple of red car drivers, and a few gas station attendants...wouldn't do or say a thing. I pulled the punk away. He and his xxxx xxxxx girlfriend who were yelling "xxxx you farang" at me, but he kept backing up as I walked at him. Eventually he took his little punk g/f and they ran off. All the wimp xxxxx thai watchers cheered me on (kind of like world war 2...no? Anyway, don't expect them to help you -- its their culture and history to not get involved.

  6. Hey Brother:

Great work. Its very hard but possible. Both my mother and father were recovered alcoholics. Each with over 35 yrs soberiety before they passed away. They were AA successes. If one last incentive (negative one). I found on facebook one of my old teenage buddies from the 1970s. We got in touch and I visited him last month. I was horrified. He's in the last stages of Alcohol Induced Pancreatitus.

He can't eat until he takes morphine and Dilaudid. Incredible pain - type 1 Diabetes. At this point he found the disolving the tablets and injecting into a vein is better than swallowing. All from years of booze (and coke).

    Good luck.

  7. Hi all, not to cause too much redundancy but I'd like to get an opinion: I'm from the USA and will be in Chiang Mai. I'm entering on visa exempt (30 days) and then will leave to get a tourist visa. What country would you suggest? Don't forget I'm departing from Chiang Mai, and would like to keep costs down, but am also looking for minimum hassle. Ive thought of Singapore. Also, what turnover process can I expect (2 days seems from what Ive read).

    Thanks to all,

    Mike

  8. You need a visa prior to leaving the US as you do not have onward ticket within 30 days. So yes, get a free tourist visa and extend 30 days until age 50 and then either convert in Thailand or obtain a single entry non immigrant O visa at a nearby Consulate.

Be sure to make arrangements with your bank for wire transfers agreement before you leave as that normally requires paperwork be signed in person at bank.

Thanks. Your answer was simpler than my question (good thing) Lastly, do I have to leave the country to change visa types? ie: if Im on a tourist visa, then turn 50, can i change this in country (Chiang Mai).

  9. With so much information on this site, I hope someone could give me a tip or 2. I'm coming from the USA. Ultimately I'm hoping to secure a retirement visa which I'll be eligible for when I turn 50 in February. I meet the income requirements, etc.

But, I will be leaving for Thailand about Mid November (3 months before 50 y.o).

Can I get a tourist visa now, extend, or if need be, do a few visa flights (30 day types) until I'm 50, and then apply while in Thailand (Chiang Mai). I understand I need at least 21 days available after my app is submitted.

Or might it be just as easy to arrive in Chiang Mai (visa exempt) and enroll in Thai language course and apply for Non Imm based on education, and then when I turn 50 apply for extension based on retirement?

I hope I haven't complicated my question. Thanks to all my friends here at Thaivisa!

    Sincerely,

    mike
