  1. These are the "little people" trying to make an honest living. Maybe putting their children through school. Paying uni tuition so their grand daughter doesn't need to prostitute herself.

I get annoyed with street vendors selling fake drugs and stupid trinkets. But food vending is part of the culture. A staple of Thai living. A necessity.

Yes we have clean sidewalks in the west. Perfect hangouts for homeless, druggies, gangs, thieves and beggars.

I rather have food vendors and a vibrant culture of celebrating the unbearable a of city life. I see the Junta is doing its best to endear itself to their constituents. Shameful.

  2. I was in Bangkok a few weeks ago. When crossing over Suk, I happened to see one of these check points in operation. I stood for about 20 minutes to see what was going on. Had a birds eye view.

There were 6-8 cops and they had a long line of vehicles stopped. Cars and scooters. Pretty much every scooter, while waiting in line, pulled out a 100 Baht bill and folded it up. When their turn came, they handed it over along with their license. The bill behind the license. After about 60 seconds, they were free to go. I didn't really notice any infractions, just a collection of money.

Simple way. Pretend to stop. Then keep going. The boys are dumbfounded and just go for the next bike or car.

  3. <snip>

Wow. I am sure there isn't an honest bar, disco or karaoke owner in Thailand. It's all a snake pit. Now, how does the owner and the local police commander explain that there were people in the place at a time that it's not supposed to be open? Perfect timing to start a crackdown on that sort of lowlife corruption.

  4. On May 11th after inking the contract we had Information and Communication Technology (ICT) minister Anudit Nakornthap saying "The first batch of 400,000 tablets, costing $32.8 million, will be delivered within 60 days." That moved a wee bit to August 18th.

We also seem to be going down on numbers with now mentioning "804,941 units". Mind you Thailand currently has 850,000 primary one students. However, of around 20,000 schools, only 9,600 currently have internet connectivity and are ready to receive the tablets.

As for the "seven units in a lot of 50,000 did not meet international standards, the ministry will reject the entire lot.". One would expect the ICT Ministry to be mathematical about this. They probably use the Student's t-distribution in their guestimates.

BTW I lost track of budgets allocated and spend. Mind you I went for a beer last night

It is reasonable to reject a lot of 50,000 unit if 7 are found to be deficient out of 500 which are picked at random for testing.

Yes. That's MIL standard sampling/inspection. They could actually choose 74 out of those 500 and allow a zero reject rate.

  5. if the liner is removable, wash in cold water with soap.

if not, spray with rubbing alcohol to disinfect.

wear a skullcap or balaclava head cover which you can wash frequenty and keeps the sweat from breaking down the foam inside your helmet.

every few seasons replace your helmet (if you ride daily, you should have a new helmet every year)

  6. As my girlfriend says, it never change for me and my family no matter who is in charge

You could send her to school to get better education (it's free now), then she could get a better job. This would be a change for her. Wouldn't it?

I financed my wife's MBA course. She is from a lower middle class family and teaches her smaller sisters to study hard, open their eyes, and grasp life's opportunities with determination. None of that "mai bpen rai" or "bad education" attitude.

The first thing someone can do to gain a significant advantage is to learn English, by the way.

  7. Those that do not support this man probably can't read or have been bribed.

Or have been lied to (brainwashed) like many of the newbie shills we see coming on here attempting to propagandize for the Red Shirt communists.

I am not sure the reds are communists (Seh Daeng was a big anti-communist hero general), however they are using communist maoist tactics to divide and conquer.

  8. Yes the salient point being that Toxin and his ilk are indeed at the top echelons of said wealthy elite

    They are nowhere near.

However for right or for wrong he has now given the rural masses a sense of enfranchisement.

But he had nothing to do with it..! He said so on his Twitter and through his excellent lawyer, therefore he must be telling the truth.

so you're basically saying that one can 'buy' the truth via twitter and expensive lawyer's mouth???

    Of course it's called propaganda.

  9. PM: we've restored order, it's time to reunify and move forward

BANGKOK: -- In his latest televised address, both in Thai and English, prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva affirmed the restoration of order, urging for reunification despite differences of opinions and reiterating the prioritisation of the value of lives. Those responsible for arson, violence and other crimes will be prosecuted strictly according to the rule of law, but also with fairness and transparency. He mentioned that the previously rejected 5 point reconciliation plan proposed by the government will be employed.

"We belong to the same house" he said.

The prime minister pointed out immediate solutions, with ad-hoc Rapid Response Force set up to assist those affected. He said the rehabilitation of damages are as important as restoring morale of the people.

As for longer-term solutions, Abhisit listed the revocation of rights-ridden government decrees, fair and transparent prosecutions, as well as reunification of the country.

"This goverment has every intention to move this country forward."

About 3 minutes ago I heard an explosion. Sound coming somewhere from the direction of Central/Asoke direction.

  10. Every single Thai I know supports this man - I hope in the weeks and months ahead, he shows everyone a path towards peace, reconciliation and unity.
I don't know what you are drinking but it must be strong. I have not met 1 Thai who supports this man, I have been to Udon, Korat, Khon Kaen and Non Kai in the last 12 months and have not met this SINGLE Thai you talk about. I can say I've met hundreds and not met a supporter of the present government. Maybe this 1 you met was hiding. :)

you need to get outside the beer bar, mate.

  11. The Reds had a point: Thailand is a very unequal society, with a handful of key families controlling so much of its commercial life - & pocketing the proceeds.

Of course they were used by the odious Thaksin - who must never be allowed to influence Thai polity again.

And they contained their fair share of violent nutters.

But their key point remains valid: Thailand is precipitously unequal.

Unless that is rectified, the Reds will rise again.

That might be the end of the present elite, even the end of civil peace.

Better to make a deal now, to bring about fairness.

I'm trying to think of a single country where a handful of elite don't rule the country. And I am an American. Please show me a country where there are actual equal rights for all, and I would gladly move there. :)

North Korea. Everybody has the same nothing.

  12. International wheels of justice turn really slowly. BUT they do turn, eventually, in most cases. Look at cases against the Khmer Rouge, even Nazi guards. If there is any satisfaction in the fact that Thaksin will never be able to have a good night's sleep , and likely has not had a good night's sleep in the last few years, then it's small justice served already.

Now, Thaksin, please stay away from my home countries, get out of Europe, go to a little island somewhere and stop making noises. You are a thug, a criminal, a dictator, a liar.

And you are represented by a "Canadian' (oh what shame!) "human rights" lawyer? What a farce. I don't know why the world has to have such evil characters running around when most of us are just trying to find a way to be a friendly face on this planet.

Shame, shame, shame on him, his disgusting family (shopping while people bleed to death for his cause), and shame on those who facilitate this awful behaviour.

  13. Incompetency at its worst.

When they can't deal with a problem they call for Public holiday. Who ends up getting hurt and pay for it is the employers, that have to pay extra to the employee, at the same time they are not making money.

This can only go so long and I guess the employer will either mover other places or close for good.

Under Thai Labor Law, an employer is obliged to offer 13 paid public holidays per year. There are more than 19 (at last count) in the regular calendar, and not every public holiday is a mandatory day off.

I assume (cannot be sure about it) that IF another 5 holidays are declared, then the employer is entitled to cancel 5 in lieu later in the year.

  14. I got a text from the wife: 'I have exsidan.' Took a while to work it out. Accident! (itwasn't serious)

hahaha...My girlfirend asked me if I had been to the Cranberry Party in Somerset.....I said Cranberry party what do you mean? She said the Cranberry party it's very big lots of music, then it twigged I said you mean Glastonbury!!!!

Sorry don't have any spelling mistake signs but thought I would share.

My wife and I drive along the highway and I keep passing cars (in Canada on the left) and she keeps saying, careful, there have light lain. I say "what?". There have light lain. What do you mean? It's not raining. No, she says "lIght LAIn", why you not drive in light lain? Oh, you mean Right Lane...ok, she says, yes exactly Light Lain!

    And on it goes...hilarious sometimes.

  15. Firstly, who knows what and who took him out. As someone pointed out, the friends of the Colonel that was assassinated on Apr 10; maybe some redshirt guards loyal to the moderate elements, or whoever. But secondly, cutting off the head of the military wing certainly is a strategy that could be employed to subdue the violent elements now present on site. As for future, again, nobody knows.

  16. Absolutely best news about Daeng being shot. The triade of terrorists (Thaksin, Daeng, Arisman) should be taken out to remove the extreme elements hijacking a perfectly good cause (rights for the poor etc etc).

My inlaws, themselves from a disadvantaged upcountry background were literally dancing in the living room about this news.

Great strategy, not sure if the government can keep up the pressure or if it's going to turn into a complete mess again.

Too bad that the reforms being made (agricultural aide, loan packages, education reforms) aren't making headlines.

WOW, what kind of a fuc_king asshol_e you are man???

I am the kind of asshol_e who likes to see that innocent people who are taking advantage of by evil leadership are not hurt any further. I am not sure what in my comment offended you, but if it was the fact that I am not mourning the loss of a rogue terrorist armed guerilla leader, then, well...so be it.

They should get to choose their own fate, unless you see the poor as unfit to vote and too easily taken advantage of, the cornerstone of Italian Fascism.

Wouldn't be surprising in a country where Democrats condemn early elections but rejoice at Military coups and assassinations...

Yes people should choose their own fate, however being paid to vote and/or to protest in the name of democracy is a perversion.

  17. One could argue that he was kinda brain-dead all along. Good riddance!

This is inflammatory talk...totally stupid for farangs in this dangerous time to get enmeshed-albeit verbally- in SOMEONE ELSE'S WAR!!!!

In the era of twitter and various forms of instant communication imagine if it leaks out that farang kii nok are rubbishing the reds...

    Moderator...are you at the controls???

In this case, a case where a renegade evil ex general plays cowboys and indians with the government of a parliamentary elected prime minister, I think foreigners are indeed entitled to comment and opinion. If (God help us if) people like this ever come to power, you have a situation like the Khmer Rouge, Rwanda, Nazi Germany, or North Korea on your hands, and it is all the world's interest to make sure that does not happen.

I call this learning from history, and except for inflammatory and drunkardly comments, the discussion on this topic are legitimate.
