  1. I have just noticed that amazingly, I am now an advanced member.

    :D

    me too :):D

Not me :D but I guess that's because every time I try to contribute some "senior member" decides I'm "OFF TOPIC" or vhave said something that offends their sensitivities. :D So I've given up trying to participate. You'll probably never see this anyhow :D

And me :D ..... what ever that means :D

Whoops I just noticed me too! :D , I guess it's just a matter of how much you write, not what actually makes it past the word police!! :D

  3. It would be wise for both sides to ask for and use (perhaps privately so Thailand can save face as an independent nation) the assistance of USA mediation -- after all, a country like the USA which has 250+ years of experience in democracy may have some good experience and ideas; whereas Thailand has less than 80 years, and all of it fraught with coups, tension, and conflict. Thailand should realize it is in the infancy of democracy and needs to understand how to deal with it.

    Ah, democracy US-style...

Do you mean like George W, got into power the first time having lost both the electoral and the popular vote?

Or are you referring to the fact that they threw out the British?

Or the conflict between North and South?

Or to the fact that they wiped out as many of the Indian tribes?

Or to the use of slaves?

Wouldn't think Thailand needs that kind of solution. The USA has many great qualities, and I have close family who are American, but your suggestion is not a good one.

You obv iously don't have a clue what your talking about!

  4. My wife is coming in to Suvarnabhumi Airport tomerrow at 11 AM. I'm driving from Phethaburi and need to follow the highways through Bangkok to get there. What is the protest doing to the Highway traffic? is it backed ip on to the freeways? If so I'll start earlier and go around Bangkok. Thanks in advance for any help. Steve :)

  5. I know I'm late with this. I just came across it looking for something else. I've only been here for 5 or 6 years, depending on how you interpret trips back to the Motherland. When I first got here, there were many things I missed, such as good dill pickles. I've since learned to make my own. A good tender steak, my wife buys loin from the village, I marinate it and it's as good as anything I could buy in the States. Pizza was a biggie, I hated every one I bought here. I learned to make pizza, and better than anything I've had before, but you have to experiment. I have a friend in Seattle who's German wife makes the best rouladin in the world. I worked for months trying to get the recipe from her. I've now made it twice and it's getting there. I guess my point is that rather than wishing we had something from our past, We should take the bull by the horns and make it happen. BTW all of my culinary experience comes from the internet, but I'm quite pleased with the results. There are a couple of things I can't replace. King crab, Alaskan, not the Russian version. moose, caribou, red salmon(sockeye), But I survive on prawns, somtam, and beer Chang. :)

  6. BTW I drink about 7 or 8 large Changs a day

    Holy crap, I thought I had a problem. :)

Problem?? I drink I fall down, No Problem!! Seriously, I've been drinking like this for years. Sometimes I wonder if I have a drinking problem, and when I'm honest with myself I say yeah you probably shouldn't drink so much. But in all honesty I drive and offer to let my wife (same age as me 62) drive and she usually says no. The only time I'm uncomfortable is when I drink the hard stuff. (Not much anymore.) I enjoy my life, I don't stagger around, and slur. So do I have a drinking problem? by AA standards yes. But I've always said the difference between us drunks and those alcoholics, is I don't have to attend those dam_n meetings!! :D
  7. Yes quite convenient to blame poor sales on a demo by 100,000 people.

My wifes folks run a general provisions shop up North and tell her that the price of everything has gone up recently. This and the fact there is no water for crops=work=not much money for beer.

Funny since Afta came into affect, my heineken at the local family mart has gone down 4 baht a can.

Canned beer? No wonder some people think Thais look down on farang! I am guessing here but I bet they only look down on farang that drink canned beer! (particularly in the daytime!)

Not forgetting those eager to show off their macho tendencies by drinking straight out of a bottle.

I'm not quite sure where that comment came from, but after spending most of my life traveling around the world with the Army, from one hel_l hole to another.I've learned that a lot of these countries know squat about sanitation. How many of these local bars, restaurants, etc. do you think use Boiling, or even hot water to sterlize your drinking glass? On the other hand The breweries do it because it keeps their product from spoiling, I never drink out of a glass if I have a choice, and it has absolutely zip to do with "macho"!
  8. Sorry but I think Chang Draught tastes like a 'Lite' and the Lite just doesn't taste - of anything. I must admit however only trying it once when I was mistakenly served Lite instead of Classic. I thought I was drinking my wife's soda, although that would at least have had a 'taste'.

Chang has always been my preferred tipple here but if not served ICE COLD (and in the Thai way with ice) it can taste revolting and only of chemicals.

If there was decent wine available and at a reasonable price I would change (or at least alternate) to that.

Promoting a good-tasting beer of lower alcohol content, such as Chang Lite (which is an acquired taste) can possibly help reduce the road toll at Songkran as well as the extent of unarmed domestic violence which is most likely to be from husband to wife or that sort of way of gender. It's not the solution in total but just a small part of the integral whole in these negative aspects of good sanuk over a drink or two.

Sorry have to agree with Hung..... lite and draught just don't do it! as far as kicking my wife's a-s I'm 230lbs, shes 100. I wouldn't even dream of it. I'd probably get mine kicked. (joke) It isn't beer that makes an a-s hole, it's their personality, if your going to beat on women, then it has to do with you and your upbringing not whether you drink regular beer or "lite". BTW I drink about 7 or 8 large Changs a day, and have never thought of raising my hand to my wife. In fact the very idea strikes terror into my heart LOL :)
  9. Did a few bars in S C last night and not many floging beer at less than Rol Bt...which I REFUSE to pay....Nuffing to do with the Reds ...

Spoke to a couple of me old mates (now mama Sans...) and even they admit prices have got silly....still pays yer dosh and all that...

    Offshore still OK.......yeah ...old git....MPR :D:)

    Just curious, is this English??

  10. Some of the threads on TV may raise a smile but this one caused peals of laughter with some hilarious posts. Shouldn't read this one when you are at work. :)

I agree totally, I very seldom get involved with these threads, because someone has normally stole my thunder. I have lived here for 5 years, and never realized that the little hose behind the toilet was for anything more than cleaning the toilet. I went to a friends house one time, and told him your out of toilet paper. He said you use the sprayer to clean your ass. I laughed and walked away. It wasn't until today (over a year later) that I realize he was sincere. I have never laughed so hard at any thread on this forum! I think I may even try this "custom", just don't tell my wife. She's Thai but lived in the US for the past 40 of her 62 years and would be horrified!

  11. The grenades are not necessarily Thai Army sourced. They have been around for donkey's years, and millions were left behind when the yanks lost their war in Nam. I'm sure they could be purchased for a quite reasonable price. Over the years since, corrosion of the detonator and deterioration of the explosive charge could be the cause of the 2 misfires, and a 50% failure rate is certainly not acceptable in issued weapons.

they are definitely not large firecrackers! the lethal component is a coil of flat wire designed to fragment into pieces about half an inch long. these will penetrate the body but don't have the mass to travel too far, though the lethal range is further than you can throw one -ain't that a nice thought!

hollywood BS is responsible for the expectation of huge explosions with flames, and bodies flying through the air.

I did like the comment that use of them in a public place is despicable. I fully agree. To qualify it by saying that it's a good way to point out companies whose political leanings you don't like is equally despicable.

From an old retired Army guy, the kill radius is 5 meters, the casualty radius is 15 meters, and as old as I am and drunk to boot, I can still send it30 meters. just clarifying :)

  12. I am a newb and only aware of Tdoor and TV. I hope people mention some of the other places because I definitely have the time to check more than 1 website each day.

No, please don't anybody do that because posting the names of other forums would be against forum rules. I am sure everybody is capable of doing searches to find what they want.

Just curious, Why is it against the 'RULES"?

  13. CATcom phone card is a good deal for making calls from Thailand to US. i have been using them for 3 years. Calls are crystal clear. 1000 baht gives you 15-16 hours worth of call time which does not expire, meaning that you only get charged for the minutes used. Good deal as far as I'm concerned.

Hi Mizzi Where do I need to go for a cat card I am in Pattaya. They have an office in Pattaya or can the phonecard be obtained anywhere else. Since Skype does not work this would be great for me to use.

    Thanks

    Barry

Why does Skype not work? I have the world wide package which Thailand is a part of the package. I think my monthly bill is about 25 euros for unlimited talking and cell phones in Thailand are included. Plus I have a US number from skype so my kids can call me anytime at no charge to them. I just leave skype on all day like it is a normal phone no problems

I agree with beardog. I've had skype for 4 years and have never been able to get it to work properly. Of course it may be that I'm on a sattelite connection, but they have not been able to get the system to work for me.
  14. My wife has a habit of not throwing things away. Even things such as broken TV remotes she insists on keeping.

For this reason, one day I let her know just what a hoarder she is..........

Even to this day, I swear at times I can hear the echo from the hand to face (mine) connection.

Yeah I know, I told my wife she was a sexy Bixch one time. One time was enough, It didn't matter how much I tried to convince her it was a good thing. took weeks to get over that one.

  15. 2 bedrooms 3 baths 2 kitchens Thai outside, Farang inside. 3 car garage. 3,000,000 baht

    Very nice & interesting design.

Cant tell from the 1st pic but what is the material used for exterior walls?

    Almost looks like red brick.

    Congrats nice place!

I was told super block, but just came from another blog that was claiming super block is white ( I call sand block) hollow concrete and sand. Anyhow it's like red brick back in the States and has two holes for putting concrete and rebar through. I think it came out nice, but had to teach my contractor how to lay the block. It also has 2 raised areas on the top as well as 2 matching indentations on the bottom, for locking them together. kind of like the toys called Lego's.
  16. 2 bedrooms 3 baths 2 kitchens Thai outside, Farang inside. 3 car garage. 3,000,000 baht

Very interesting with the separate structures. Do you have other family living with you? Just interested in your thoughts on separate structures instead of one large one.

No just the wife and I. We're older (62). One side is a " great room " one large open area 70 sqm. living/dining room/kitchen with an outside (on the porch) western style bathroom. The other side is 2 bedrooms w/baths approximately 40 sqm. each and built-in closets. I love the style (detached I mean.) The only thing I would do differently is connect the roofs so that the walkway between the houses stayed dry during the rainy season. I don't mind getting wet, but the tile on the porch gets slick and I don't need a broken hip or some such nonsense. I planned to use sand wash for the deck, but was outvoted :) .

  17. Thailand is trying everything in its power to disuade foreigners from coming here.

Mind you, thats quite a wack, 150 baht, more than most countries.

    Ernest

Yeah, it is a conspiracy. The Banks sit down with the government in smoky back rooms and work out ways to stick it to the poor defenseless farang. Diddums

Get over it. You clearly have no idea about economics.

The banks are charging it cause they are betting that people will pay it regardless, and that they won't go away. How is it in a banks interest to drive away clientele?

They are betting that Mr Sextourist Jones and Mr BarStool Davies are going to go the the bank, and like always, pull out their money, and that this fee, while in the beginning an irritant, they'll quickly get used to paying.

And you will get used to paying it. And you won't leave Thailand, will you?

    Here Here!! What he said!
