  1. Even if the prisoners are guilty, they still have the right to be kept healthy while they serve out their sentences. They are people, not animals.

Very true...i totally agree, they are all still people maybe someone's husband, wife, father, mother, sister or brother.......while some of them may have done very bad things is dying of swine flu not an easy way out for them, im sure staying in that prison is a lot lot worse!

  2. agreed, it was a rather odd article today! they dont usually include the whole he said this and they said that style. Not very impressive unfortunately but hopefully wont happen again! back to the topic, the check points have started to get rather annoying! First with the poor announcement to foreigners on where to go to get stickers etc...and now there seems to be really long lines of traffic in Koh Kaew, Manik, cherngtalay and at the end of the surin beach road on your way back from Kamala is even worse with the traffic going all the way to Lampsing today! speed it up boys! All I have seen the army guys do is sit and speak to the local catoyes in the evening!

Traffic :) ? I live two blocks from Laguna. Last night, when driving from Royal Phuket Marina to my home at 6:30pm, there were no tailbacks at all the entire distiance - not in Koh Kaew, not in Manik, and not in Cherngtalay. And this morning, when I went back to RPM at 8am, same - not back-ups at all. I almost had the idea that the Asean meetings had been canceled. Perhaps beauty is just in the eye of the beholder.

On that particuar day I was in traffic from Tesco lotus (bangtao) all the way to the traffic lights near big one, but must admit they have now moved that checkpoint further up and hasnt been since!

  3. @ baabaabobo and ThaiMatters: you have both completely misunderstood the point I was trying to make. Yes, I read this forum and occasionally post. Yes, I read the Gazette every week.

I have NEVER seen posts from this forum being included in the Gazette's "news" emails or web articles before. I doubt if this "article" will get into the printed paper - I certainly hope not.

What I want from the Gazette is hard news, not abridged, anonymous posts from this forum. This article was clearly written by someone from this forum and "cleaned up" by a Gazette editor.

It would have been far better if the article had simply given a link to the appropriate topic(s) in this forum and reduced to half its length.

ASEAN Meetings: Phuket residents rush for stickers for fast-track security clearance

PHUKET: Col Piyapong Wongchan, Deputy Chief of the Internal Security Operations Command in Phuket, said this afternoon that Phuket vehicle owners who want special passes to facilitate clearance through the many special security checkpoints now being set up around the island should contact their village heads in Thalang and Kathu districts.

More than 40,000 such stickers have already been issued for use during the Asean foreign ministers' meetings which begin later this week and run through July 23. Distribution of the passes will be completed by Thursday (July 17).

Security before, during and after the meetings will be tight as the Cabinet on Thursday invoked the Internal Security Act for enforcement in Phuket during the period July 10-24. The measure was deemed necessary to prevent a recurrence of the fiasco in Pattaya earlier this year when protesters, fueled by supporters of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, sabotaged the originally-scheduled ASEAN meetings, forcing their termination.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said during his weekly TV talk this morning that many VIPs would attend the meetings and he wished the Thai public to be good hosts, especially people living in Phuket.

The meetings would help stimulate tourism for the island, he noted.

Mr Abhisit said intelligence reports show that "certain groups of people" are still trying to organize protests to disrupt the meetings in Phuket, as had happened in Pattaya.

  6. you can go today to the orbortor office across from the School in Cherng talay they are open, bring your Green book for the vehicles and they will issue the stickers tomorrow.

    Easy

not everyone has a green book because some cars are on finance and they dont give you them does that mean you cant get one?

  7. my understanding is that the expats need to make sure they have passports and some id re their residency, then should have no problems, the skickers are mostly to control which Thai's can move around the area to avoid red yellow situations.

That is what I thought but a policeman I know told me that the sticker is needed otherwise you will have to park your car outside certain areas and walk! Also in all the check points in cherngtalay area (which is looking to be a lot) they will start to stop you and check your car (Make you get out etc,....) I just think it is better to get this access sticker to prevent any unnecessary checks as they could be rather annoying!

  8. What is the eMail address to send to ?

I work at the Cherngtalay School part-time and my Agency knows nothing, as usual :)

would love to help but one of the girls i work with did it for me, shes not in till late next week but if you get someone to phone the obotor they will tell you.

  9. I live in Cherng talay and they are informing on loud speakers now that they will issue the stickers for people living here 11-12 July.

From what my girlfiend is telling me you have to go tomorrow to an office close to the School in Cherng talay to get stickers for car and bike?strange they dont inform the expat community here..only in Thai.

I think that it should have been in the phuket gazette! I had someone check it out for me today and the obotor told us to email copies of driving liscences and write down our registration numbers they said the stickers will be avaliable to collect next week

  10. All people living there are aware of the situation, and of course had been ask to register their car or Motorcycle.

People working there are aware as well. The Human resource department of the Laguna is taking care of it, and staffs know about it. As well for every each Human ressource department of every each hotel and resort located in the Laguna. Staff will all been issued a sticker.

It's an easy process which is well organize.

Suppliers of hotels, and excursion agency will be registering their cars and van as well.

Those who do not will not be able to go in.

Those which are not leaving there will not be able to go in too, with their car.

A visitor pass will be granted for those who want to go in for dinner or lunch, as an exemple. But will have to walk from the outside of the Laguna.

This is from my information, but correct be if I'm wrong on the visitor.

I live in the area but wasnt aware of the situation and have no idea where to go to get such a sticker.I dont work in the area either. do you have any idea where we are suppose to go to register?

  11. I have been hearing from several people that you have to go and register your car/motorbike license registration number AND receive a sticker to put on your car so that when they have the meetings in Laguna next week you can drive through that area otherwise NO ONE can pass through even if you live there. Does anyone know where/how to register???

  12. They should have kept quiet about it! Even though its wrong Thailand can hurt you in many ways! I fear that there will be someone who can set them up now! I dont even think that they have any cameras in King power shop??? If you speak the language they wouldnt dare!!! seems like they are hitting the tourists because they dont understand much about thailand and how corrupt the police are! Bloody thieves!

That is a ridiculous statement :)

Why should they take it on the chin ? :D

And how can " Thailand hurt you in many ways " if you dont set foot in the place

as i am sure many potential tourists will do now as a result of this publicity ?

if they are going to court then they will have to come here to testify! how is it rediculous it is well known that thai police have their own ways of getting their own way the couple probably wont make it to a hotel from the airport thats just how things work here. im not saying its right but 400000 baht as oppose to waiting for 10 years for a trail (in jail) and having problems with the thai police sounds good to me!!!

  14. MJ you were a legend and always will be, your death has shocked and saddened the world! We loved you! may you Rest in Peace! .............I only hope that there is someone new who can be as good as you in the music industry today, although I doubt this will happen for many years to come!

  15. maybe im ignorant of it but i didnt think weed was so bad there.. can understand with the other shit they say they caught him with though.. kev had told me he hardly smoked there cos of weather etc so i dont know exactly what happened.. If Nut was in any danger, or he thought she was, I know he would say nothing no matter how many times they hit him.

does anyone know where he will be, which prison in Phucket, and if I can send anything from the UK.. or how to find out when he will go to court..

if can visit him.. best guy in consulate to talk to (they dont return calls).. please ??

Kevin is not in Jail at the moment, he is out on bail and has been for quite some time, I think the police kept his phone as they usually do in these cases. If you give me your name and no then I will pass the message on to tell him to contact you.

    Phuket Immigration crackdown announced

Phuket Immigration Superintendent Chanatpol Yongbunjerd speaks at this morning's press conference.

PHUKET CITY: Phuket Immigration this morning held a press conference to announce measures aimed at improving compliance with immigration law, including the requirement that owners of all hotels, guesthouses and rental homes report foreigners on their premises to immigration within 24 hours of arrival.

Phuket Immigration Superintendent Chanatpol Yongbunjerd told the press that the crackdown follows the recent arrest of three ethnic Rohingyas on charges of involvement in an international human smuggling ring.

The three men, two of whom were arrested in Songkhla's Haad Yai district, are also suspected of having links to terrorist groups including Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).

The crackdown is also part of stepped-up security in the run-up to the 42nd Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting, scheduled to take place at Laguna Phuket from July 16 to 23, Col Chanatpol said.

Expected to attend that event are Foreign Ministers from all 10 Asean states as well as their counterparts from dialogue partners Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the European Union, the United States, China, India, South Korea and Russia.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to attend the meeting, during which the ministers are expected to try and hammer out a unified approach to the nuclear ambitions of pariah state North Korea – which successfully carried out a nuclear test in May.

Col Chanatpol used the press conference to ask for co-operation from hotel owners as well as employers of low-wage foreign laborers, who must report the details of all foreigners under their employ as soon as possible – or face fines.

Other security measures will include: more thorough screening of foreigners entering and leaving the country, especially those on watch lists or exhibiting suspicious behavior; increased co-operation with local police departments in monitoring residences with foreigners in domicile, especially those with suspicious behavior; increased security in popular tourism and nightlife entertainment areas; and better co-ordination and information exchange among police and related agencies.

Col Chanatpol also asked the public to report any problems or useful information to Phuket Immigration on 076-212108.

Phuket Immigration Inspector for Investigation Suparerk Pankosol, who also attended the meeting, told the press that homeowners who fail to inform Immigration of foreigners staying in their homes – either as guests or under rental agreements – face fines not exceeding 2,000 baht.

Owners of hotels, guesthouses and other commercial accommodation establishments who fail to report guests are subject to fines ranging from 2,000 baht to 10,000 baht, he said.

Phuket Immigration's webmaster, Bunta Lapet, told the media that such registration could be conducted quickly and easily on line by using the site's "Phuket Immigration Enterprise" webpage.

  17. I think the card is mainly just for people who need to have the receipt written to a certain company such as your own restaurant or hotel, when you use the card it comes up with the name of company and address on it so I think thats why people would use it so you can put the bill into accounts otherwise, If you are doing personal shopping I dont think it is necessary"

  18. of course the owners ok with you doing that...when you leave they get to keep it all for free!!! Its suppose to be the owner that does that. My friend lives in Permsap Villa I think would be near where you live and they just asked the owner to do all that
