  1. Less serious but I got a couple of laser tattoo removal sessions in Pattaya based clinic. Left me a bad scar due to too much power used. Also was ct-scanned for head trauma in Bkk Koh Chang clinic. Diagnosis: brain stroke and athrophy blink.png . Got seriously worried and went through complete magnetic scans and neurologic studies just to confirm nothing was wrong in the first place when I got back to my home country. Licenced docs or not but didn't leave me very confident I'd promote "medical tourism" for Europeans.

  2. I'd like to find alternatives for mooring the boat in Ocean Marina as it's a bit out of my budget considering my boat's just 23 feet center console. Does anyone has info on other places? I've also planned to go to Koh Samui later this winter and I remember read that Bangrak has places but would there be any in Lamai? And what should one be expecting to pay/month.

  3. I had a fiberglass tour boat for 4 seasons in Koh Chang. It was good fun (if not businesswise:) doing trips for tourists and even locals with my Thai captain. Koh Chang and especially Koh Kood offer fairly good fishing, the catch is mostly barracuda and king mackerel though. I like trolling so we were not so much into bottom fishing but that's certainly the easiest way to catch something there with a live squid or 'pla tu' for mackerel.

Never caught a sailfish which buggers me so I have to go back there with a new smaller boat to chase that dream next month. The sailfish season is short though late October until November but I've seen a sail jumping nearby Koh Kood in April so there might be some chance. Koh Chang is worth trying only at the moment there are no good trolling boats doing trips for tourists.

See the pi, there's certainly something bigger around to chase these 2 kilo barracudas.

  4. HI I live on Ko Chang I am an experienced fisherman, I have my own gear and can pay my own way :) if anybody wants to go fishing drop me I Line get it I am experienced in trolling for marlin and salmon

I live there too during the winter months and own a boat there so drop me a message. Unfortunately I'm staying in farangland until October but then the king mackerel season should be on so expecting nice cathces when I come back. I'd love to share tips and gps coordinates, since opened this thread I've gained a lot of experience and in april hardly ever came back to pier without a barracuda on board. Also managed to catch mackerels up to 8 kilos. I haven't heard of any marlin or sailfish catches there recently but if you have a clue where to go you don't have to pay anything for diesel if we manage to land one :D

    A typical catch:

  5. Visibility and time of day do not seem important for baracuda.

Have you caught them by trolling lures at night time? Never tried this myself. Getting squids for baits is getting more difficult every year here on Koh Chang, I'm not sure who to blame, the trawlers that wipe out everything or the hotels and boats that pump their waste water and bilges to the sea.

  6. Today I raised the trolling speed to around 5 knots and had a good bite for red/white cd Rapala mag but unfortunately lost it. But still we got better catches by using live squid when doing some bottomfishing. Unfortunately the weather turned bad and had to come back early.

What about rigging squids for trolling, working or not?

  7. I love fishing and spend a lot of time on Koh Chang. The typical method here is just to get live squid for baits and go bottomfishing but I'd love to learn more about trolling because I find it more interesting. The typical Rapala Magnums aren't working here or then I just do something wrong. Any experienced barracuda chasers here? What to do to get that big one?

  8. I own a small pleasure boat in Thailand and I'd really love make some tours for tourists to earn a bit of money to cover the maintaining costs of the boat. I just don't know much about the legal side of this. Can I lease it to 51% thai owned limited company which then operates the tours? Is it a problem I own 49% of that company or do I need to change the ownership to only 30%? Any advice is welcome.

  9. I know 2 guys who ordered 10m 'boat' for 800,000 THB. They have got hull and deck moldings joined together, moldings got only 2 layers of glass mat. After all, they had to invest another 2M THB to make it float, but still the boat does not perform.

Check launching record before making a decision.

Excellent advice for the people bitten by boatfever in Thailand. I've seen the latest pics of the project and the boat looks good on the outside, but I'm not sure if my friend ever checked out the launching record of the yard in question. What I'm waiting for is the moment the boat is launched. Actually quite scared of that to be honest :)

It's not a speedboat so performing isn't THAT important but still I'm really worried about does the builder actually know much about boatbuilding. There so many things that can go wrong.

  10. The only case I know of where a westerner actually kept funds for a penalty during a work contract involved a bond and five years of court cases, the total was about 500,000 TB on a 5,000,0000 TB Project and included death threats and many sleepless night for the friend.

Can you give a few details without revealing the name of the builder? What city? Fiberglass, steel, or wood? What kind of boat? How much money are you talking about?

We are talking about 10 meter fiberglass boat worth about 1 million baht. I don't want to reveal the builder until the project is finished as I'm well aware of the possible damage it might cause for the negotiations.

I know of one notorious boat yard in Pattaya which has managed to scam many westerners which have been allured by cheap prices but the project has never finished or the product has been just useless but somehow I think my friend does have a chance with his builder. I've seen the contract and I couldn't see any loop holes that the builder could use.

  11. A friend of mine is getting a boat built in Thailand and the boatbuilder is now seriously late. My friend is now trying to seek advice how to settle things with the builder as he has difficulties communicating with him.

My question is that if the contract has a clause "Date of completion no later than XXX from the date of the deposit. Penalty for late completion xxx per week thereafter", how valid is that in Thailand? Does anyone have any experience dealing with these kind of matters? If the builder refuses to deduct the penalty amount from the final payment and will not hand over the boat or the construction stops what are the options for a customer?

What about chances fighting this in the court? How long will it take and how much could it possibly cost? The contract should be otherwise valid, checked by a lawyer.
