  1. I have it on good authority that only non-smoking farangs will have the right to own land by year end 2004. The laws are being re-written due to overwhelming public outcry from the "un-silent minority." These are a collective of non-pleabian inconnu who oft suffer from self conjured ignes fatui, thus exercising baseless--and in fact--imported rights of free speech from various home countries. Spouting a continuous drone of flippant quips from countless Internet soapboxes, the members of this disagreeable demimonde seem to fain selective amnesia, forgeting that they are guests in this country with no rights of citizenship.

  2. There are several foreigers work in Thailand as opposed to working at a university. Some work for multi-national companies and are on ex-pat packages. These usually include nice salaries (in dollars) and benefits such as living allowances. Other less fortunate foreign individuals have been hired locally, receiving less than nice salries in baht without benefits. Ironically, to get the former you usually have to be hired from outside the country thus costing more and knowing less. What should happen is that after 2-3 years the ex-pat contract finishes and the ex-pat returns home or converts to LHS status. However, the latter is rare, as most opt to take the money and run. In both cases, it is key that one doesn't compete in any way with local Thais, otherwise you might as well be making a Thai salary, which except on very-rare occasions is not enough money to satisfy most farang.

That's a good point English Noodles.

Actually I was hoping to get some input on what kind "farang groups" live in Thailand.  I don't view my own quick classification as complete or accurate, that's why it's not a poll.  Anyway, whatever.

  3. Dear Big,

First off, you look just like Jade Hsu, porno star from California. Goo on ya!

    Second,

FLASH CARDS, my man. When the kids learn Thai, the first thing they learn is the name of every letter. Each character is associated with a thing like "Ga Gai," "Sa Salah," and "Wa Wen" for example.

I never did this, but I know the pronounciation of each character. The difficulty arises when someone asks you to spell something or visa versa. The will spell it out for you: Ka Kwai... Salah EE... Na Noo... etc...

Use flash cards, just like back in 4th grade math class. It's the best way to memorize the characters. Then move to words and use them both ways, english to Thai and Thai to English.

To me that's the most effective way. Once you're there, move on to the books by Benjawan Poomsan Becker w/ tape or CD.

Third, get yellow sticky post-it notes and paste them all over your girlfriend. Best way to learn body parts.

    Bye for now...

I am learning how to speak thai (slowly)

But have headr so many times that it is easier after you learn the script. Can any one advise my of how to learn it. I have seen web sites and have books but what were your techniques how did you learn what did you do first,

  4. Why move from Maui. It's No Ka Oi.

Advice: never try to compete in an area of business that can be done by locals, period. You either need to be the Sen Yai or nothing at all.

I guess a bar is the investment of choice..but what other choices are there?

I'm about to relocate there from maui, and I'd really like to know..

Construction and home repair (plumber, electrician, carpenter). At least these are the things I spent most money on...

And how did that business do for you? With all the development, I should think pretty well?

  5. RDN,

It's Benjawan not Benjamin, and she's a woman.

That said, her series Thai for Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced etc. is probably the best available on the shelves these days.

She stresses Thai students to break the reliance on transliteration, which is key to understanding correct pronounciation.

Her pocket dictionary is also excellent as it allows lookup in three ways: English, transliterated Thai, and Thai. It's a good tool to help wean one's self off transliteration w/o jumping in head first.

    Regards...

  6. Hopefully, they stop being prostitutes after they are married.

    Reasons for marrying a prostitue:

    She comes fully trained.

    She comes again and again

    She cooks well.

She can "suk pa" like a demon.

    She is probably pretty hot.

    She rarely has a headache.

    She has a great family.

She has a heart of gold (2baht).

    She's a wonderful person.

    You love her.

The reason not to marry a prostitue is a bit longer.

    Baaaa.

PS: your information on Thai men is totally unfounded. Thai's roam the ins and outs of the dirty road probably more than 95% of farang here; but they won't marry here until she gets onto the TV.

    Oh, and:

    She doesn't read cosmopolitan.

    She isn't a heifer.

She has long, black, luxurious hair.

    She smells fantabulous.

    She smiles all the time.

    She smokes like the dickins.

    She appreciates the exchange rate.

    She eats bugs.

    She shaves her beaver.

    She is not high maintenence.

She will never say, "why can't you be more like Jesus."

    Shall I go on?

Well, truth be told. They aren't all as sweet, but you know what I'm saying.

    Baaaaaa...
