Loh could well be a Chinese surname, it's also well used by Caucasian families, at least in my original country.

In any event Chinese or whatever is not really the point.

I really don't care whether Eric is of Chinese ethicity or not. That was not my point.

I had two points to suggest:

    1. That the Thaksin clan is overwhelmingly ethic Chinese, and that this might be relevant to Eric's association with the clan, especially Yingluck ("Congratulations Madame Yingluck').

    2. That I don't like the misuse of the term 'Farang' as a catch-all for foreigner.

I certainly have nothing against China or people of Chinese descent - I spent 4 years at university studying Chinese language and culture.

  2. ' you are wasting your time, the person you are trying to convince is not just an ordinary farang posting an opinion on a message forum - I suspect he is an active member of the Thaksin inner circle and has been posting these propaganda lies on here for a considerable time '

Why do you assume, with a Chinese surname, that he is a Farang?

Sorry but the horse has already bolted,  Kingsgate are withdrawing billions in investments in Thailand, over one thousand thai jobs gone and they are using these billions to invest in Chilli.  They were losing millions and found it to difficult to do business with military rulers who have little or no expertise in this area.  Yes they will still be suing to re coupe losses at the hands of the Junta.

Chilli? That's going to buy one hell of a lot of peppers.

If you earn 15,000 a month then it might feel like it.

My point is that the Thai police are not going to take any interest in this putative 'theft'. The sum involved is simply too small. The 'evidence' provided in the article is unconvincing, and the identification of the 'perpetrators' as foreigners is ludicrous. Apart from the fact that they 'look' distinctly East Asian, who can distinguish between Thais, Chinese, etc., in CCTV video of such poor quality?

I actually found better bars, prices, cleanliness, friendliness last time I was in Salt Lake City, Utah and every notorious Bible Belt city you could name.  Three wineries in my parents new town of 1600 people.  I simply came on here and posted a recent experience trying to do a couple of beers...in less than two hours we had last year's Janet Reno look alike contest winner on here spouting off about pot bellied retirees on a budget that contradicts what she seemed to have forgot she said in an interview.  Then I was called a predator.  It appears you can now see it was the femibutches, who got Bernard Trink out of the BKK Post; not the Thais.  It is also more clear why the city self destructed.  Usual Thai shoot yourself in the feet business and a big manure truck load of the sanctimonious ready to impose their standards on the rest of the World at the mere mention of a late afternoon beer. I'm single again after three years..really never had to search for entertainment...had a package deal...cleaning, cooking, massage, etc..all one fair price....she got an opportunity for more cash in bkk and told me she was leaving...why was I not surprised.  We once watched Papillon for three hours and she didn't even know we were watching the Spanish version.  Maybe I'll find one who actually completed M4, next time.  Apparently it is a lot easier than finding a bar that can check a few boxes.  Finding her clone would even be easier.

So why aren't you in Salt Lake City? One of out major partners operates out of there - but I personally am happy in Chiang Mai, Please, I invite you to leave!

It`s my nickname for foreigners that think a few temples and some old piles of 700 year old bricks in the city represents history and culture.

Well, I have been here for more than a quarter of a century and I love it. It's my home.

Without trying to be predicatbly tendentious, why do you stay?

History and culture. That should take all of 2 days providing they start out early before everything closes and try to avoid some of these attractions that have duel pricing policies for Farlangs.

I have no idea what a 'Farlang' is.

  8. '... I have advised some friends who are thinking about holidaying in Thailand and have not visited Chiang Mai before, to not bother and waste their time and money coming here'.

Unless, of course, they are interested in history and culture. Which doesn't preclude nightlife, but surely merits a visit...

  9. My Hang Dong experience was a little different, but overall satisfactory.

No chanote, but I did need a witness (Puyai Baan). 60 Baht fee. About one hour.

Irritatingly, they would not accept my Work Permit as proof of abode, so I had to go to Promenada for a 'nangseu raprong'.

Of course it's useful. It establishes permanent abode and also - at least in my case - it is for life (talot chiwit).

  10. Can anyone recommend a Chiang Mai lawyer to assist and advise in applying for either of these options, please?

I have a recommended Bangkok legal firm, but they say I have to submit the application through Chiang Mai immigration as my house book is registered here.

    Many thanks for any advice.

    So what is the news?

This you can find around the world and also in the western countries.

There the even will add you in the the registration system.

The paper only tell that tje person in qiestion inderstand the way of testing and how to answer correctly and could probaly learn well.

The paper does not tell anything about the actual skills and competences a person has and if tje person relly inderstood and can apply.

Seen this too much in the test center we have.

We stoped a long time ago selecting peolle based in the paper and pages like LinkedIn.

Just test them if they have really ghe skills needed and the competences needed.

    Like typing and spelling?

  12. I asked the senior official at Building 3, Airport Immigration about this again yesterday. He confirmed (in Thai) returning from overseas - need to register; returning from a stay outside Changwat Chiang Mai - no need to register (actually "mai pen rai").

Why worry that much about the lanterns? Loy Krathong is mainly about the floating of the krathongs, no restrictions on that.

In Central, Southern and Northeast Thaland, true. But in the old Lan Na KIngdom of the north and in neighbouring Shan State it's traditionally been khom loi or floating lanterns for Yee Peng.
