  1. I read antivirals do not work on this strain of flu maybe that is why your doctor told you no.

They work well. Very little resistance so far. I do have some and in the past my doc was happy to script it. No more.

Sooo :) ,"don't leave home without it".

I'll try to find the article again but it said that antivirals had little to no impact on N1H1 but they didn't say which ones.

  2. I really hate the word "farang" I have come to associate it with something bad sorry, I had to get that off my chest and I'm not a "farang" and can live with what the Thais call me but it just seems funny to see white men say it.

Anyway I would say my wife puts our children first and me second after that her family and my family, I think that is the order of things with most woman not just Thai. I would hardly say my wife would sell off our possessions and give the money to her family, not that they need it as they are pretty well off.

You are the farang - get used to it, you will hear it frequently.

It also quickly becomes part of your vocubulary as in "..is that a new Falang in town...?". You do not find yourself saying "..is that a new white male Westerner in town..."

No, I am Indian Dang not Falang, farang whatever. I thought the name Hunkpati (Dakota) might have given that away, well maybe not most people only know Hunkpapa (Lakota).

  3. Has anyone seen American Spirit cigarettes or rolling tobacco in Chiang Mai? I really want the organic which is what I have always smoked but I will settle for anything over the chemically infused tobaccos. I don't care how much it costs or if I have to ship it from somewhere, I agree with the poster who said the one brand of Thai tobacco tastes like "pine needles" and the other stuff I have had turns you fingers and teeth brown after 2 or 3 smokes. If anyone has any details please let me know, thanks.

  4. I wounder who they learned from or model themselves after. I'm not sticking up for Thailand as I prefer my own country but lets call a spade a spade.

"corruption by government officials was acceptable as long as it improved their living conditions"

As long as it benefits me I don't care who you kill or whos land you take or what country you start a war with seems to be the Western worlds attitude.

"Thailand is a nation made up largely of thieves who will cheat at every opportunity"

What like AIG, Bernie Madoff, GM, Whitewater, Enron, etc., etc., etc.

"Government lottery tickets are sold out regularly at premium prices because a lot of Thais wish to attain a high income level without working for it".

You can buy them in any gas station in the USA, even instant winners and they are run by the state governments.

"Young Thai women marry retired foreigners whose pensions provide a road to an easy life".

What Americans don't? Anna Nicole was just a famous one but, how many trophy wives are there?

"Expensive German cars, Swiss watches, and French handbags all sell well in Thailand. Thais buy more luxury German cars than the Japanese, even though the latter have far more upper-income professionals".

They sell well in the USA too, put that on my card please because I can't really afford it, really I can finance a Benz for 10 years.

"Thais cannot work co-operatively for any length of time"

The South still waves Confederate flags and my brothers and sisters still live on reservations sure they get a free pair of running shoes and a blanket every year, Neo-Nazi party and the KKK, AIM, yep we all get along and work well together.

"Tens of thousands of Buddhist temples have been built, many practically next to each other, because the solution for disagreement among members of the congregation is to build another one".

I'm with Ben Franklin on this one, "Light houses are more useful than churches" but still we have too many, I bet the Vatican has enough wealth to buy every Buddhist temple in Thailand.

And let us keep in mind G.W. Bush doubled a national deficit that had 233 to accumulate in just 8 years.

  5. I know I'm new here but seeing how you travel around the world forcing your beliefs on people and destroying their cultures I would like you to read my propaganda, it is the least you owe my ancestors. I'm starting to see a connection between the Hill Tribes and my own.

Brothers, our seats were once large, and yours were small. You have now become a great people, and we have scarcely a place left to spread our blankets. You have got our country, but are not satisfied; you want to force your religion upon us.

Brother, continue to listen. You say that you are sent to instruct us how to worship the Great Spirit agreeable to his mind; and if we do not take hold of the religion which you white people teach, we shall be unhappy hereafter. You say that you are right, and we are lost. How do we know this to be true? We understand that your religion is written in a book. If it was intended for us as well as you, why has not the Great Spirit given to us — and not only to us, but to our forefathers — the knowledge of that book, with the means of understanding it rightly? We only know what you tell us about it. How shall we know when to believe, being so often deceived by the white people?

Brother, you say there is but one way to worship and serve the Great Spirit. If there is but one religion, why do you white people differ so much about it? Why not all agree, as you can all read the book?

Brother, we do not understand these things. We are told that your religion was given to your forefathers, and has been handed down from father to son. We also, have a religion which was given to our forefathers, and has been handed down to us, their children. We worship in that way. It teaches us to be thankful for all favors we receive; to love each other, and be united. We never quarrel about religion, because it is a matter which concerns each man and the Great Spirit.

Brother, we do not wish to destroy your religion or take it from you; we only want to enjoy our own.

Brother, we have been told that you have been preaching to the white people in this place. These people are our neighbors: We are acquainted with them. We will wait a little while and see what effect your preaching has upon them. If we find it does them good, makes them honest and less disposed to cheat Indians, we will consider again of what you have said.

They do us no good. If they are not useful to the white people and do them no good, why do they send them among the Indians? If they are useful to the white people and do them good, why do they not keep them at home? They [the white men] are surely bad enough to need the labor of everyone who can make them better. These men [the missionaries] know we do not understand their religion. We cannot read their book — they tell us different stories about what it contains, and we believe they make the book talk to suit themselves.

If we had no money, no land and no country to be cheated out of these black coats would not trouble themselves about our good hereafter. The Great Spirit will not punish us for what we do not know. He will do justice to his red children. These black coats talk to the Great Spirit, and ask for light that we may see as they do, when they are blind themselves and quarrel about the light that guides them. These things we do not understand, and the light which they give us makes the straight and plain path trod by our fathers, dark and dreary. The black coats tell us to work and raise corn; they do nothing themselves and would starve to death if someone did not feed them. All they do is to pray to the Great Spirit; but that will not make corn and potatoes grow; if it will why do they beg from us and from the white people. The red men knew nothing of trouble until it came from the white men; as soon as they crossed the great waters they wanted our country, and in return have always been ready to teach us to quarrel about their religion. Red Jacket can never be the friend of such men. If they [the Indians] were raised among white people, and learned to work and read as they do, it would only make their situation worse.... We are few and weak, but may for a long time be happy if we hold fast to our country, and the religion of our fathers.

    Sagoyewatha (Red Jacket)

  7. My Great Grandfather was a Wasicu (white man) and nobody ever had a problem with him, if anything thanks to his genetics my family has no alcoholics or diabetics. I think in general Americans do not have this attitude race purity, where I'm from most people are mixed with white or Dakota so it's no big deal.

  8. And there are so many legal ways around this problem if you actually want to farm here. Seems they only give you the negative spin in the media but as for high tech farming and pharmaceutical crop farming the laws are a lot different because there is a lot of investment up front and a lot of money to be spread around afterward. There are also a lot of non-Thais involved in agricultural education that do field work, no pun intended.

  9. Sheesh - all this fuss about frankfurters?? Unbelievable.

The CM forum, food, bickering - nah.

Boo has already warned about the bickering. Continuing will force closure of this topic. <sigh> More about the imported beer please. Yes, I used to drink Coors when it was only available in Colorado - probably due to the novelty, but seemed pretty good ice cold at the time. Sorry to missed the function.

I drank one of every American beer except Budweiser because where I come from all you can get is Bud, Bud Light, Bud Ice, Bud Dry, Bud American Ale, Bush and maybe Michelob if you're in a highbrow place, I never want to see Bud again. But mostly I stuck with the Sam Adams Lager, I was a little tipsy so paid no mind to the hot dogs but as you said is it really that important.
