    Without a work permit, yes.

That's why he needed a work permit. Nor did he have to own his own company but simply been an employee.

Without a work permit. Non-Thais ARE allowed to do it with a work permit.

We love paranoia here and will do all we can to enjoy it, so hearsay is very important. But in general a foreigner should be circumspect about engaging in work not permitted on his work permit, yes. A foreigner holding a work permit can ask the authorities if he's not clear about what he can and can't do. Is that a problem for you?

Why would some French idiot getting arrested be a problem for me?!

Anyhow, looks like you don't proper understand them  labor laws. Maybe this will help you:

    1. There are jobs that cannot be done by foreigners, they are reserved for Thais ONLY

    2. A work permit doesn't allow you to do whatever you want, wherever you want - it is restricted to ONE JOB and ONE PLACE

Prawit told the agencies to learn from past statistics to identify accident causes and try to minimise them, said Kongcheep.

    Start with:

    • having a proper driving license test
    • ensuring the medical (re-)checks when renewing the license are fair (read fail some half-blind farts)
    • cancelling the driving license for drunk-driving and fatal accidents, but also for obvious driving "mistakes" such as ignoring the red-light, parking in sharp curves etc
    • making sure the traffic policemen are doing their job
    • etc etc etc

Conclusion: everyone knows, how to make it better, there's no need for statistics. The question is why don't they do it better?

Respectfully, do you need to be told not to climb on the statues?

Well, it is not the Statue of Liberty, is it? Besides, some (maybe dumb) tourists might see stairs at the bottom of it.

It's not that I think they didn't do anything wrong, but surely they think that, don't they? How would they know it's wrong if nobody tells them, not even a simple sign on a wall.

But it's already legal. Hence, the work permit.

I'm not an expert, but I believe it is/was illegal for him to do THAT job, that's why he needed Thai employees. So he was doing something that only Thais are allowed to do.

I've also heard of restaurant owners being afraid to even pick the dirty plates from the tables, because someone might report them for doing something else than their work permit says, and that would be doing an illegal work (read only for Thais).

You, obviously. From memory perhaps the first check is on Honda which is after 10,000 km or 6 months. After which all is on you. I get my serviced every 10,000 km.

Thanks. Let me ask you another question. Am I obliged to do all the maintenance things that Honda wants me to do? For example, if they tell me that I must change some parts, but I think that's not the need. Can I refuse, or I have to do it?

PS it is not the cost that bothers me, it's mostly the fact that I've heard of dishonest dealers that call the cars in for maintenance and instead of doing so, they actually replace new parts with old ones.

  6. OK, long story short: I've bought a Honda and I must pay for it 5 years. The company is Honda Leasing and the period of payment 5 years.

Question is (for those familiar with Honda Leasing): during these 5 years, who pays for maintenance, me or Honda? ie oil change, parts replaces etc.

  7. Hi, I'm gonna try to make this short

Someone from a legal advice company told me that the (foreign) parent a Thai child cannot extend its non-O visa (I know these are not hard to get, but they do last only 2-3 months) for one year unless they are divorced AND have custody of the child

    Can anyone confirm that?

Let's say, in my case, that I'm not divorced - that would mean that the extension stamp will write 'Thai wife', and not 'Thai child'. Correct?

Or I can have a 'Thai child' visa while still being married?!

    Thank you.

  8. A friend of mine has his son at one of the Sarasas schools in Chiang Mai and he is happy enough with the education. I know an non-native-speaking chap who teaches at another Sarasas school and his English is far from fluent. i wouldn't want him teaching my child English!

Well, it is "a non-native", not "an non-..." and "I" instead of "i".

Maybe you do need someone else to teach your child English cheesy.gif

And you should consider a non-native, because these guys have degrees. Without at least a Bachelor degree no school will hire a non-native. But many (to many) of the native speakers get their jobs only because of their passport.

  9. I like the introduction, "Minor local celebrity Adam Bradshaw...", because it says so much using just a few words. Since he's here long enough to learn the local language, it appears that he forgot to learn when it is time to better shut up. Don't think this stunt will do him any good, nor will it boost his "minor celeb" career...

Unfortunately, it will help him. Why do you think he wrote it in the first place?!

Many Thais are rather superficial and will believe he's some kind of protector of the Thai language and the 'Thai ways'. Just read some of the comments, coming from Thais, on his Fb post. He's their hero now lol

And as some else wrote before, prepare to read an interview with this guy in the next days, maybe even on this site, about this 'issue' that he - himself - created.

  10. Interesting. I have never heard a "farang" accent.

Nor have I ever heard of a Thai faking a English or American accent, or not able to speak Thai any more.

I know a few kiddies (my own including) that sound a little more American 'cause of the influence of cartoon network.

And of course, I can pin point the area on the map that any Thai that studied in the UK based on the accent they came back with - but only when they speak English.

But fake accents? I think Adam is a bit of a f*ckwit. Fact is - if you send a Thai to London for 2-3 years, they will pick up the accent when they speak English.

I wan thinking about a much harder word to describe this guy biggrin.png

Fact is, I've been living in Turkey for only 2 months when I was younger. It took me at least 1 month to get rid of the 'gipsy accent' - as my friends described it lol

And the accent was present when I was speaking my mother language, mind that I don't know Turkish.

So I guess some people are easier to influence, while some others are not.

I'm curious to know if this guy has a 'farang accent' when speaking Thai, or he forgot about it now.

  11. Cant they just trace the bank account(s) the money was sent to?

If he had have conned the $300,000 out of his ¨victim¨all would have been good, but the indignation of being caught out at your own game......

But the thing is there was nothing wrong in his mind with what he had in mind, but the ¨American¨ was a crook and should be arrested!!

There is a picture of a woman from an ID card in the linked story which i assume is from the bank account. Since she appears to be the only person who really exists there is nothing to indicate this isn't just a Thai on Thai scam.

Good point and the only one that should matter.

It's a Thai scammed by a Thai - nobody knows any other people involved... so far, at least.

  12. I keep some water in the bathroom, in a small barrel/tank as all Thais do probably. It always has some dirt (mud) at the bottom and I have to clean it regularly. And this is not it, the insides of that barrel gets sticky, somehow it feels like shampoo when I touch it, not like normal water.

So... I doubt it is safe to drink.

Maybe they meant to say "It is safe to drink 1-2 times" !?!

  13.

Unbelievable. How many have to die ? 9 dead by last count on a failed condo construction and now this. Totally inexcusable. My heart goes out the little girl and her family.

This sad "accident" relived memories of the Thai "electrician" who came to my home to install new water heaters. Before he was done with the installation I decided to check what he had done so far. I caught him in time before he was ready to snip the green wire for grounding. I insisted he grounded the water heater or I would not pay him. He angrily cursed in Thai and said: you Farang know nothing: no need green wire to make it work!

It is appalling that an ATM of a major bank had an electric leak most likely because it was not grounded.

The bank will give financial support to the family of the little girl. Not because of the goodness of their heart but because per Thai custom if the family of the victim is financially compensated, the family, abiding by tradition, will not press charges and the culprit is not prosecuted. As in the  case of sinsod, it's all about the money.

    Thainess kills!

May God help this little girl fully recover!

Maybe it is just my bad luck, but ALL houses that I have rented and lived in were not grounded. And ALL skilled guys (not only electricians) that I've seen working and/or asked to do some repairs did nothing but a joke (except for my car's mechanic, kudos Mr. Nong).

I reached the sad and scary conclusion that there's no safe human built place in Thailand.

As for this sad incident, probably the authorities and the police will decide that the only one to blame is the... ATM itself. And life will continue as usual, except for the little one and her family sad.png Let's hope that she will recover.
