Wanchai Sak-udomchai, director general of the Meteorological Department, said inaccurate weather forecasts have recently been widely shared by online social networkers and those who shared the wrong information claimed that got they it from his department.

Wanchai said sharing of the rumors prompted the public to perceive the department of being inaccurate in its weather forecasts.

Wanchai urged the public not to believe the rumors on weather forecasts, especially those about natural disasters.

He said the public should believe only information directly from the department's website and the department also plans to release more weather information via its own social media channels.

The director general said his department has received a budget of Bt212 million for upgrading its weather forecast computer system so that the weather information would be more accurate.

After the three-day circulation of the video clip in the social media, the public poured out donations to assist the two to get a new home and to kick-start a new life.

  5. Bangkok: – Thung Song Hong police are investigating the killing of Sergeant Napapat Nuan-iad, a female staff officer for national police chief General Somyos Pumpanmuang.

After the discovery of Napapat’s death yesterday, police close to the investigation said Somyos had ordered to hush up the case, Thairath newspaper reported.

The newspaper quoted an anonymous police source as saying that Thung Song Hong superintendent Colonel Termphao Siriphuban received a complaint about lingering foul smell for the past two days at the Police Flat located under his jurisdiction.

At the scene, Termphao and forensic officials found Napapat’s body in her flat unit.

Napapat reportedly had been brutally killed. The estimated time of her death was about two days ago. The hot weather was believed to have caused her body to decompose quickly.

Police neighbours gave statement and police were tight-lipped about the details.

Based on the newspaper report, investigators have launched a manhunt for a policeman who is the victim’s boyfriend.

The boyfriend is a team member of the special force from the Police Aerial Reinforcement Unit. The victim is an officer of the Border Patrol Police seconded to work in the national police chief’s staff.

The two has been known to live together for months at the victim’s flat unit.

Flat residents said they have not seen the boyfriend recently.

Before her death, the victim is seen as a sociable and outgoing officer. She had a part time job selling vegetable juice on her Facebook page.

Staff members of Somyos said they heard rumour that the victim and her boyfriend had several arguments lately although they did not know the details.

They also said the victim had missed work for two days and that they could not contact her because her mobile phone was turned off.

  6. Prachuab Khiri Khan: A landslide has blocked the only walkway to one of Thailand’s amazing attractions, the Phraya Nakhon Cave in this southern province. Strict safety measures are being observed.
Inside this natural cave is a royal pavilion that shines gloriously under the sunlight. Although it is a cave, this place enjoys the sun through a big hole on its top. The elaborate pavilion was erected in 1890 for King Rama V’s visit. After many kings of Thailand came to this cave, it becomes a popular destination.
Saratcha Suriyakul na Ayutthaya, who heads the Conservation Area Management Office 3 with jurisdiction covering the cave, told ASTV Manager on Sunday that the walkway to the Phraya Nakahon Cave was now off-limits to tourists.
“Anyone who wishes to visit the cave will have to take a boat instead,” he said.
In the wake of a tropical storm, the landslide took place on the Thian Mountain on Thursday’s night. Although there was no casualty, the incident has blocked the walkway to the Phraya Nakhon Cave.
Saratcha said officials had barred tourists from getting near the landslide spot out of safety concerns.
He explained that his office was waiting for experts from a nearby geology office to assess the safety around the mountain before deciding to reopen the walkway. The Meteorological Department, meanwhile, has forecast rainstorms for many parts of Thailand this week.
Phraya Nakhon Cave is a part of the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. It is named after Phraya Nakhon, who discovered it over 200 years ago.

  7. Chumphon: Thai researchers have succeeded in creating a giant “Pla Mor” (Climbing perches) that weighs up to one kilogram and is tipped as a new kind of economic fish for nationwide local consumption.

Pla Mor naturally grows to 25 cm but the Chumphon-based researchers and breeders have succeeded in creating a considerably bigger type weighing from 350 grams to 1 kilograms each, Thai Rath online reported. The fish can sell at up to Bt200 per kilo, which is good incentive for whoever deciding to farm it.

Pla Mor has been important as food fish in many Asian areas and known for its ability to survive out of water for long periods, provided it is kept moist.

The researchers and breeders had been working on Pla Mor breeds from all Thai regions, trying to create a bigger type that was also easier to farm. Their success, Thai Rath said, means the new Pla Mor would soon become a new economic fish that grows quickly and sells at good prices.

Climbing perches or climbing gouramis are so named because of their ability to “climb” out of water and move short distances. They use the gill plates as support and push themselves using fins and tails.

In Thailand, Pla Mor can exist and survive by themselves in rice fields or muddy areas and are generally considered poor man's food. However, the latest success of researchers and breeders in Chumphon would make local consumption of Pla Mor more widespread and the fish can bring considerable incomes to those who farm it.

  8. Samut Prakan: Drivers of some 1,700 large-sized taxis at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport called off their plan protest Friday after the airport agreed to restrict the number of passengers per trip at four.

Dalat Assavet, deputy director of the Suvarnabhumi Airport, said she held a meeting with representatives of the taxi drivers and other government agencies concerned Friday to discuss the demands of drivers of the large-sized or mini-van taxis.

As part of their demands, the drivers called on the airport to rescind a rule that forced them to take up all passengers of the same group in one trip although their number is higher than four.

Patthawee Meeraj, a representative of the mini-van taxi drivers at the airport, said the rule made it not safe for the passengers themselves as insurance policy would not cover an accident if a taxi transports more than four passengers at a time.

So, drivers of the large taxis want a large group of passengers to use more than one taxi.

Dalat said the airport agreed to limit the number of passengers per one trip for both normal size and large size taxis at four.

She said the taxi drivers were happy and promised to use meter instead of charging a chartered rate.

After learning of the airport’s decision, Patthawee said the taxi drivers cancelled the planned protest for fear that it would affect the reputation of the country.

Patthawee said the taxi representatives were happy with the meeting result.

Patthawee’s group also called for higher surcharge for large taxis but the transport minister said the call is still under study so it cannot be granted now.

Chaiwat said police retrieved an iPhone 6 Plus smartphone, a brown Louis Vuitton handbag, a Prada wallet, five credit cards and an identification card of the tourist from the two.

The Chinese tourist told police that she was shopping at the shopping area of the Patong beach when the two snatched her bag and fled the scene on their motorcycle.

  11. Bangkok:- A 35-year-old man was Friday arrested for allegedly smashing his wife’s head with a rock pestle after he found that she had cordial Facebook chats with another man.

Tinnakorn Srichana waited for police at the scene after he allegedly killed Wilaiporn Rungklang, 34, inside their rented room in a four-floor building of a boarding house on Soi Navamin 163 in Bangkok’s Buengkum district.

Pol Lt Fahkhamron Rirong, an interrogator of Khokhram police station, was informed of the murder at 1 pm. He rushed to the scene with scientific crime detection officers, a forensic doctor from the Police Hospital and Ruam Katanyoo Foundation officials.

They found the body of Wilaiporn on the bed. She had severe wounds on her face and head.

Tinnakorn testified that he killed his wife out of jealousy.

He said he works for the accountancy division of an electric appliance company in Ramkhamhaeng area and his wife worked at a card box factory in Navamin area. He said they have been living together for years and they have one child.

He said his wife promised to stop chatting with the man but he found out on Thursday that she still talked to him via FAcebook chat so they quarreled again.

Tinnakorn said he quarreled with her again at 3 am Friday and they fought against each other. He said he became so angry that he grabbed the pestle in the room to hit her in the head and face.

He said he became sorry so he tried to hang himself but an electric wire he used was broken off with his weight. He called his father, telling him that he would jump off the roof but his father told him to surrender to police.

  12. Bangkok: – Charoen Pokphand Group and two investment partners from China and Hong Kong have reaffirmed Bt1.52 trillion proposal for the Bangkok-Pattaya-Rayong high speed train service.

Transport Minister PrajinJuntong said CP investment consortium will include CITIC Construction, based in Hong Kong and HNA Group from Hainan, China.

He voiced optimism that the investment project would be ready to seek and receive the government green light by the end of next month.

  15. Samut Prakan:- Drivers of over 1,700 taxis at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport threatened to stage three-day protests on Friday to demand baggage fee and higher surcharge.

The threat was raised by Patthawee Meeraj, a representative of the taxi drivers at the airport.

Patthawee said over 1,700 drivers of mini-van taxis at the Suvarnabhumi airport would stop picking up passengers at the airport from Friday to Sunday to highlight their demands.

Patthawee said the taxi drivers of large-sized or mini-van taxies would like the Suvarnabhumi airport to allow them to charge passengers for their bags. They also want a higher surcharge because their taxis are larger and they can carry more bags than normal taxis.

Patthawee added that the drivers of the mini-van taxis also want the right to reject passengers who arrive in a group of more than four. Patthawee reasoned that the insurance policy for taxis does not cover accidents in case the taxis carry more than four passengers at a time.

Patthawee said the government should also increase the metered fare rates for taxis.

But Transport Minister ACM Prajin Juntong dismissed the threat of protest. Prajin said he has instructed the Suvarnabhumi airport to prepare other transport means for the passengers.

The airport was told to help passengers to use the service of the Airport Rail Link electric trains and the airport will also provide buses to transport passenger to certain spots where they can call taxis.

Prajin said the demands of the mini-van taxi drivers cannot be met now because a government committee studying the demands has not yet completed its study.

  16. Bangkok: –The authorities are mapping out ways to design a new package of health benefits in order to encourage people with physical disabilities to enter the job market.

At present, people with physical disabilities would not be entitled to certain health benefits if they are employed, said a senior labour official.

This is happening because of the gap between the social security scheme and the universal health care scheme.

The social security for workers has less coverage than the universal health care for the handicapped. The country is legislating to enact a new social security law.

Under the existing law, provisions are meant for able-bodied workers and for compensation to terminate employment for the handicapped.

Thailand has 1.6 million people with physical disabilities. Of the handicapped population, about 700,000 can work. But only 200,000 are employed.

For the past six months, the Labour Ministry has been campaigning to boost the job placements for the unemployed people with physical disabilities.

Some 400 to 500 handicapped have sought and received job placements.

Based on the six-month performance report, the ministry has assisted in the job placements for 224,587 unemployed people and in finding 45,087 job placements overseas.

For the second half of 2015, the ministry will strive to bring marginalised workers, such as the handicapped and the hill tribe people into the social security system.

In regard to alien workers, some 1.6 million migrants from neighbouring countries have registered with the ministry.

Of the total migrants, some 300,000 have been verified about their nationality. Workers with unverified nationality would be allowed a temporary stay for one year pending checks on documentation.

To facilitate the employment of legal migrant workers, the ministry has cut short the three-year gap to one month for legal migrants with expired visa to leave Thailand before reapplying for work visa.

  17. Bangkok:- A group of Thai researchers Thursday announced that they have found supplementary food that can boost CD4 count on people with HIV.

The research result was announced by representatives of Chiang Mai University’s Biological Medical Technology Research Center and Asian Phytoceuticals Plc in Bangkok.

Kannikar Ruanchan, the head of the research project, noted that the supplementary food is not aimed at replacing anti-viral drug for people with HIV but the food can help boost the CD4 count and reduce side effects from the anti-viral drug greatly.

She said the supplementary food was a mix of extracts from Sesame seed, mangosteen, gotu kola and guava.

She said the supplementary food helped the body of HIV patients adjust their immunity.

It has been tested with 27 people with HIV in Chiang Mai’s Mae On district. Each of the volunteers was given four capsules of the food a day and found that their CD4 count increased a lot. Twenty-five of them have been taken anti-viral drug for two years and their side effects symptom improved.

Prof Pichet Wiriyajittra, a research chief of the company, said the research found that the number of CD4 count increased by five folds after the volunteers took four capsules of the food for 15 days.

He said officials from the Thai Red Cross have checked and witnessed the result.

Pichet said the company has registered and won a license for the supplementary food from the Food and Drug Administration.

Pichet said his firm would not register the extracts as drug because the process would be too complicated and time-consuming.

  18. Bangkok:- A Facebook community page for taxi drivers has further drawn ire from Bangkok passengers when it posted that drivers of large-sized taxis at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport has protested against what they saw as unfair fare rate for them.

Instead of winning support for the protest, the post instead drew criticisms. Many people posted comments, saying the unhappy taxi drivers should quit their career and leave the Suvarnabhumi for good.

The Voice of Taxis page on Monday posted picture of empty car park ground for taxis. It said drivers of large mini-van types taxis all decided to protest for a day so that passengers with a lot of belongings may try using two small-size taxis instead of one large-sized taxi that wants to collect a flat rate.

It stated that the passengers thought they were taken advantage of by large taxi drivers so they should try packing all their bags into a small taxi.

The protest followed the airport’s ban against two drivers of mini-van taxis who collected a flat rate fare on a group of Japanese tourists instead of using meter. The airport took the action after a Bangkok resident Japanese man posted on his Facebook, complaining against the two taxi drivers.

A Faceobook user who uses the name of Nate Aquarius said: “Congratulation for the protest. Passengers always have options and they don’t have to depend on childish taxi drivers”.

Thanet Kanthasob said he totally agreed with the protest because passengers can pay Bt800 for an Airport limousine to get a much better service than that from mini-van taxis, which charge nearly the same rate with the limousine.

Thanarat Sodsup posted that small-sized taxis, whose drivers are unhappy with the use of meters, should also stop taking up passengers at the airport.

  21. Bangkok: – The Legal Execution Department has issued a rigorous justification for its auction of Khao Yai plots which have later been developed into Kirimaya Resort before the discovery of unlawful land rights documentation.

LED director general Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol said her department had strictly followed legal and judicial procedures on asset liquidation.

The controversy on Kirimaya Resort has been lingering because of unanswered questions related to the issuing of land rights documents.

The resort is located on 36 plots covering 1,400 rai near Khao Yai National Park in Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima.

Ruenvadee said the 36 plots were part of the seized assets destined for liquidation involving the collapsed Bangkok Bank of Commerce.

Under the court order, the department held the auction of the plots in 2000.

The auction was organised three times before the winning bidder paid 265 million baht for the plots. The auction revenues were distributed among the bank’s creditors.

The winning bidder subsequently sold the plots to the Kirimaya developer.

Ruenvadee said before the plots auction, the department had sought and received the confirmation from the Lands Department that land rights were legal and that related documents were lawfully issued.

As questions arose that the plots were in the national park area and that the land documents were issued unlawfully, she said this was beyond the control of her department.

Should the land rights be cancelled, the injured party, which in this case is the Kirimaya developer, would have to sue the winning bidder, a juristic entity Roi Kaew Co, she said.

The company would in turn litigate against the authorities involved in the unlawful documentation of the plots, she said.

  22. Chiang Mai:- Police have launched a hunt for a female undertaker who allegedly sold an infant corpse to a black-magic practitioner.

The suspect is identified only as “Boon”.

“We have to find her. Stealing or selling a corpse is illegal,” Provincial Police Region 5 commissioner Lt General Tanitsak Thirasawat told Thairath on Wednesday after he interrogated a self-confessed practitioner of black magic.

Chalerm Duangthong, 31, has admitted to police that he bought the corpse of an infant at Bt3,000 after Boon approached him.

“I intend to adopt the soul and raise it like my own daughter,” he said. Many Thais have worshipped baby amulets as they believe in the mystical being of Kumarn Thong, who is said to have supernatural power.

Chalerm, a former abbot of Huai Din Jee Temple in Chiang Mai’s Doi Lor district, had the corpse buried under shrines in the temple’s grounds. The corpse is covered with gold leaf and laid inside a glass coffin.

Local people have lodged a complaint against Chalerm as they feel uncomfortable with black magic.

The former abbot, so far, has insisted that although he engaged in black magic, his practice is not malicious in nature.

“I don’t use it to harm anyone,” he said.

Police have already dug up the corpse and sent it to a hospital for a proper autopsy.

“We should get autopsy results by Friday,” Tanitsak said.

He has now assigned his deputy, Pol Maj General Pacha Rattanaphan, to investigate further so as to nail down legal offenders in this case.

  23. Pattaya, Chon Buri:- An unidentified Asian tourist’s body was found on a beach on Koh Larn Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Pol Lt Chophaka Prueksachart, an officer on duty of Pattaya police station, was alerted at 2 pm that a body was found at Thong Lang beach of Koh Larn in Tambon Naklua in Bang Lamung district.

Chophaka rushed to the scene on a speed boat with rescuers from Sawang Boribun Thammasathan Pattya Foundation.

The body of a white Asian man was found at the spot. He appeared to be about 25 to 30 years old. He was wearing a white t-shirt with black dots and black trousers. He was wearing a silver bracelet on the right wrists and a Romanson watch on the left. He was carrying no identification card or any travel document.

His body had no sign of bruises or being harmed. It was estimated that he had died one day or two days earlier.

A small black backpack was found near the body but it was empty. Police kept it as evidence.

Police believe the man was an Asian tourist who might drown somewhere else and his body might be washed ashore at the beach.

Police sent the body for an autopsy at the Police Hospital.

Chophaka said police will check with various hotels and resorts on the island and in Pattaya to check whether any tourist had gone missing.

She urged anyone whose relative had gone missing to come to the Pattaya police station with his photo.

Koh Larn is popular among Chinese tourists and two of them have drowned near the island over the weekend.
