BANGKOK: -- Chulalongkorn University (CU) is campaigning for students to comply with its dress code, while Thammasat University (TU) wants to the government to launch a "Social Cabinet" to tackle the issue of students wearing uniforms inappropriately.

At the project launch yesterday, CU rector Pirom Kamolratanakul said wearing a Chula student uniform, the only one to be granted by the monarchy, is a privilege.

TU deputy rector for student affairs Parinya Thewana-ruemitkul said the president for Network of Deputy Rectors for Student Affairs supervised the student uniform code at each university. He added that Thammasat was less strict about the uniform than some other universities, but insisted students wear "appropriate clothes" to classes.

    Celebrities' influence

Blaming the influence of fashions worn by movie and TV stars, he urged that a Social Cabinet comprising the efforts of several ministries should be set up to help universities solve the problem. The Culture Ministry could ask celebrities to wear clothes appropriate to the time of day and occasion as well as promote good values, he added.

Deputy Education Minister Chaiwuti Bannawat agreed that students need good discipline and praised universities' successful efforts in improving the standard of their students' dress.

  2. In the duty free shop I have never been left alone long enough to try and take anything anywhere other than to the nearest register. I do not like to have s sales person under my armpit while I am browsing which assortment of "buy three get one free chocolate bars." As for perfume and such, I can see there are no boundaries between shops so it would be easy to walk from one area to another without knowing you had left someone's small four meter square cosmetics or skin whitener counter.

I'm betting nothing gets done to make the situation improve in the duty free shops but if one Is STUPID enough to walk away from an area without paying after reading this go ahead, dummy....

Baggage handlers; what baggage handlers? I have been in and out of both airports many times in the past two years and have never even seen a baggage handler offer their services. Tote your own luggage; the carts are free and NOBODy checks ANYBODY'S baggage claim ticket anyway so the thief could just as esily be a Farang. all you gotta do is watch the bags go around and if it is not picked up the second time around chances are you could take it out without being challenged.

the theft most likely occurs when unloading the plane and the luggage is picked over and diverted to another location known by the thieves and airport officials who are getting their tea money for turning a blind eye.

All in all I have lost more goods at some of the finer hotels on Soi 4 and Soi 8 than anywhere else. Locked storage rooms mean nothing.

  3. This just keeps getting stranger every time I read about the 800,000 baht bank balance. The lawyer I use in Bkk said this rule did not apply if you could show an income equivalent to about 65,000 baht a month. I do not know what is true but I guess I will find out since when I retire here in Dec 2009.

I will be able to show the 65,000 baht income from monthly retirement income but to maintain 800,000 balance forever seems to be a major obstacle.

I just sign an statement at the American embassy saying how much I earn a month and swear this is true, they stamp the paper and I am out the door. So far nobody has asked about a bank balance and I have a multi entry exit visa god for one year. I do not know if being married to a Thai makes any difference in the 800,000 balance. If that is the case, I will be renting forever just to keep 800,000 in the bank.

I have to apply for a retirement visa next and I think that means beginning the process all over again with a 90 day visa then a one year type O and I have to check in the local city clerk where I will be living every 90 days to show I am still in Thailand.

NONE of this is easy unless yo

u hire a lawyer to make sure it is done properly. The well intended advice given here is like getting 20 opinions and no two are ever the same on any subject.
