  1. There is a short time hotel (Louis Tavern Hotel) inside the international terminal if you just want a shower, relax, watch some TV and do some email, etc. I think you buy in 4 hour blocks. There is also 2 massage places within the international terminal.

Alternatively, if you really want to come in to town, landing at 6am should see you though immigration and in town by about 7:30am. If you flight leaves at 4pm, you really need to be back at the airport by about 1:30pm, which means leaving town by about 1pm. Not going to be many massage places open in the morning that early and cinemas are mostly in teh shopping malls and generally don't crank up till about 10am. Maybe just stay at the airport!

  2. This isnt AU, it is Thailand, so get over it and smile. The quirks are what attracts lots of us here, simply because it is different. Personal safety is each individual's responsibility here. Getting frustrated (rightly or wrongly) by all the things you mention only makes your time here less enjoyable. Life is too short to walk around angry all day about things you can not change or even influence!

If you prefer somewhere more 'civilized' there are plenty of options?

  3. At A$39 a month, that's ~1,200 baht. I am guessing, but your current provider in Aus is 'unlimited' but I bet that is only national (fixed and mobile) calls and has no international component whatsoever.

So, if comparing apples with apples, I think that your current budget would go a very, very long way if only making 'national' calls (mobile or fixed) whilst in Thailand. For international, dialing 00500 before the country code gets you VoIP with AIS at bloody super good rates and the quality is fine.

Unlock your phone, grab 1-2-call from AIS. Other post has approximate rates and you can see from that you will be hard pushed to blow the budget. As for data, from A$3 a month upwards.

  4. First hand experience. 3 weeks in Chulla hospital, emergency surgery, cat scans, etc, intensive care for 3 days then 2 weeks in a ward. Total cost - 50,000 baht. Paid cash upon 'check out' then made claim in own country. Didn't choose Chulla, that's just where the ambulance took me. Great staff and doctors though and would recommend it over any other hospital here.

Guy in same ward (dutch) had a motocy accident and was in bad shape - in there for a long time and ran up a bill of 600k. He couldn't pay (broke & no insurance), embassy came in, they wouldn't help either. In the end, police came and took him to jail.

  5. Yep.

I live on suk 50, sawadee 4. Water now over the road, about 6 inches in parts.. can still ride motorcy, but steadily getting worse.

Just heard on Twitter that it is flooding on Sukhumvit 50. Can anyone confirm this? It was only one report, also putting Bang Jak on alert. Any news as in the centre and need to know if I should dash home.

TV news reported Sukhumit 50, 54 and 56 starting to flood.

  6. Yes....My wife is about to graduate. Been going Sunday mornings only, homework through the week. It's free for Thai's.

"Wattana District Non-formal and informal education centre". She went to Wattana as we live in On Nut, but there are many scattered throughout Bangkok.

    Cheers

  7. Sounds like ANZ is using Citibank as an intermediary bank to transfer funds and Citibank is taking a slice of your money (i.e., charging a fee as it flows through them). ANZ could tell you if they are using Citibank as an intermediary bank and the associated fee. Sounds like ANZ and their funds transfer arrangements are the sources of your problem (fees).

The intermediary bank will always take a fee and nothing you can do about that other than change banks and work directly with the likes of a Citibank or HSBC. TT's are fast, secure and not overly expensive. It must have been a very large sum for the intermediary to sting you that much ! I get charged about AUS35 per throw for about US15k transfer (and that includes the intermediary).

Why would you have trouble getting the money back out of Thailand? You have documentation from the ANZ showing a transfer to Kasikorm I imagine. That should suffice. Even though it came via an intermediary, you should still be OK.

  8. Assuming live in, that really isn't going to get anyone to stick.

Yes, there are people out there who may have been lucky at that or lower price points, but I know many who are paying lots more than that. I would suggest 10 / 11k would get you the result you are looking for. For the sake of paying an extra 3k a month (which is USD3 per day more than you are paying now) isn't a great sum when you consider that she will be responsible for your child.

Just an opinion, don't shoot me down !

  9. Is it EU$130,000 or 130.00?

If 130, then just Western Union. No hassles, no fuss and not that expensive. Just front up with passport and the cash.

If 130,000 you will need a thai bank account and do a SWIFT transfer, will cost about 2000 baht. This is not without hassles though. I recently sent US20k to Aus and needed to take proof of income (where the money came from) and they also wanted copy of work permit. Without these two documents, darn near impossible to get the money out. No one bank better than the others for this, it always tends to be a branch by branch decision.

  10. If you live in BKK... no .. scratch that.

If you don't speak Thai and are looking for random hookups with women you meet in bars you'll get bar girls. If you do speak Thai and are looking for random hookups with women you meet in bars they won't be "nice" girls but they might be friendly. If you are doing it on the cheap ......

Edit to add ... nice girls only go to clubs in groups of friends and if you don't blend in some meaningful way with those friends ... you are out of luck :)

    I agree.

I think this is spot on, every paragraph.

It is the same here as back home. One must "befriend" them first.

I think the bar he is looking for is next to the unicorn shop on the corner of Soi Dreaming and Soi <deleted>?

  11. Given that looking after 2 children (one in Kindy), doing the housework and cooking is something that most wives handle quite comfortably on their own, I don't understand why you would consider it an undue workload?

  12. Was stuck in Chulla hospital for 3 weeks last year. TGF took doctors cert to immigration and they simply extended it. Because I could not attend immigration in person, we needed photos of me holding the news paper with that day's date on it. She went on her own to immigration with the photo & doctors note and they extended it as per the note. No issues whatsoever and this is on the back of multiple 30 day tourist visas, maybe 20 or so of them.

    Fret not.
