  1. If you're prepared to travel a couple of hours, Toyota Prae seem much more keen on doing deals than the local Toyota dealership monopoly.

Do you have any contact info on Toyota Prae - phone number or POC?

    Thanks.

  2. Last election I was here, nothing happened, no fines arrived at my Australian address.... I will be back in OZ early December, I wonder it that will be too late to not vote for little John??

If that's your voting intention I hope you do get back too late :o

It is better that we do not count on age, religion, colour even our distance since they don't matter because what matters most is real love.

Waiting to read from you direct in my mail address.hears from you

    Miss Olivia.

Said TV member has 0 posts, and this TV member doesn't have a profile worth viewing, nor desire for any love interests, so I'm guessing this a precursor to some sort of scam.. Just a heads up for the admins.

  4. I really don't know anything about importing boats, but according to the Customs database there's a 35% statutory ad valorem rate on sailing boats (category 8903.91.00), however when clicking through to see the details, most importer categories are listed as being exempted, which probably fits right in with what wimpy's saying above.

Search the tariffs yourself here: http://igtf.customs.go.th/igtf/viewerImpor...do?param=langEn

  5. They're all over the place - all of the major arterial roads will have at least one easily visible one, and they all have displays and fabric samples so you can understand what your're buying before you commit.

That said, here's some recommendations for places I've visited, no names though I'm afraid:

Hang Dong Road: heading out of CM, on the left side approx 1KM before Tesco Lotus. Really nice people and good prices. Didn't end up using them so can't comment on actual delivered quality, but their samples/displays look top notch.

City: Come over the Nawarat bridge onto Tapae road and take the first available right. There's a large Indian/Pakistani place on your right just around the corner. Big range of fabrics/designs but didn't use them as they were a little on the expensive side. More choice here than anywhere else though, so worth a look if you can't find what you want elsewhere.

Doisaket Road: heading towards CM, about 2KM from the 121 ring road on your left in a group of shop houses. Has a large banner on the 3rd floor (in English - something or other "Decor") clearly visible as you approach. Great service and prices - used them to do all the curtains, blinds and fitted carpets in our latest house.

  6. 1. The 400K renewal scheme is grandfathered for people who entered Thailand on a single-entry non-immigrant O (supporting spouse) visa before October 1st, 2006.

    2. I've never heard of a Thai embassy or consulate abroad that ever needed 400K in a Thai bank in order to issues a single-entry Non-immigrant O visa. They may ask for your bank recoards, but there's no stipulation on the amount. However, most (all?) embassies/consulates abroad will need to see 400K or equivelant foreign currency in order to issue you with a multiple-entry Non-immigrant O visa - the multiple entry variant is not valid for the one year extension scheme however, so the extension rules do not apply.

  7. Hello all,

Married couple must have an income of 40.000 Baht per month.

Income together with your wife not less than 40.000 Baht per month is okay.

Income from your wife not less than 40.000 Baht per month is okay too.

The grandfather clause is only for the lucky married couple already in the system.

They got an extension of stay BEFORE October 1, 2006, that it...

    Correction:

In order to be grandfathered on the 400K Baht rule, you must have entered Thailand before October 1, 2006.

  8. Today we went in to Chiangmai immigration for my 3rd one year extension of stay based on being married to a Thai..

Amongst the regular pile of paperwork I included a few happy snaps of us and the kids, which were promptly returned to us with a chuckle saying "don't need", so it would seem this is not a universal requirement. YMMV tough.

As an aside, I qualify on both the 400K and on income, however for the first time ever they handed back all of my employment related paperwork, saying "400K is enough" - even though the 400K had only been in my account for 2 months not the required 3 months (which they did check & notice BTW). The officer did say however that the 400K must be in the account for at least 3 months when I go to renew next year. In the past they have demanded evidence of income from me even though I had 400+K in the bank, so it's a case of another year, another ruleset.

    Once again, YMMV though..

  9. Seeing as you're on a TOT line, you can scrub MaxNet off your list, as it's TT&T exclusive.

As noted, TOT do 1mbps for 500 + VAT and 2mbps for 1000 + VAT. As with all 20-50:1 ADSL plans, expect your speed to drop dramatically below advertised during peak hours, or pretty much all the time if your local exchange is full of DSL clients.

The only way to get better and/or more relaible speeds is to get yourself onto a plan with a lower share ratio. You'll need to talk to the big independant ISP's for this rather than your telco though. Here's some links:

    Jasmine Internet

    KSC Internet

    CS Loxinfo

And a local outfit that seems to be rebranding Ji-Net services:

    CM Internet

As noted by another poster, TOT's ADSL help desk is only open during business hours Mon-Fri, and their English skills range from poor to non-existant. If TOT ADSL goes down after 4PM on a Friday, do not expect it to be back up before Monday lunch. Do expect it to go down every other weekend though - I did two months on a TOT plan before it became just too much to bear. That said, I was on a Jasmine Internet DSL plan for 6+ Months and had no qualms at all - it wasn't as cheap as the high share ratio plans, but it did work as advertised and I only changed providers as a result of a house move. Recommended.

  10. New 2007 model B&W 685 standmount speakers (pair) in red cherry finish.

True audiophile speakers from one of the world's most respected high-end brands. For a small to medium sized room, you'll be hard pressed to do better than these for less than 80,000 Baht. Smooth, dynamic and incredibly musical with great bottom end extension belying their compact size.

These speakers have recently won the coveted EISA 2007/2008 awards for the best compact loudspeaker in Europe, and have been winning huge amounts of praise from all that have bought or reviewed them.

When What Hi-Fi? reviewed these speakers in their September 2007 issue, they had this to say: "These B&W speakers are endlessly musical and thoroughly enjoyable across a wide range of material", and "The stage the B&W's present is deep, wide and tall, and the 685's effortlessly isolate and integrate instruments upon it. Fine details are retrieved and described without fuss, testing dynamic shifts dispatched imperiously and the overall presentation is one of smoothly integrated coherence", summarising their review with: "Don't buy any £500 speakers without hearing these".

    Features:

    * 165mm (6.5") Kevlar woofers

    * 25mm Nautilus tube loaded aluminium dome tweeters

    * Hand picked 1st order crossovers

    * Bi-wirable/ Bi-ampable binding posts

    * Flowport front-firing bass reflex port

    Specifications:

    Frequency Response: 42Hz-50kHz (+/- 6dB)

Recommended Power: 25-100w into 8 ohm unclipped programme

    Sensitivity: 88dB 1W/1M

These speakers were purchased from an authorized B&W retailer in Bangkok in July 2007, and are in as-new condition with all the original packaging and manuals. Original purchase receipts for 34,900 Baht will also be supplied to insure there's no problems with the remainder of the 5-year warranty (not that you'll need it!)

Buying substantially more expensive speakers (300K Baht), so the 685's need a new home! Selling for 28,000 Baht ONO. PM me if you're interested.

  11. This used to be the case, but unfortunately they will not issue them any more on a non immigrant visa. You will have to pop along to your country's consulate, and pay through the nose for a consular letter. :o

Hrmm, I'm sure I saw the sign on the counter when I last did my 90-day report, but that was almost 3 months ago now - are you sure of this? Last I knew they'd limited it to those on the 1-year extension scheme and PR's, not a blanket on all Non-O's.. It'll certainly make life difficult for those who don't have consulates locally.

  12. Maxnet are running a special promotion on top of the "double your speed" promo - you would have received a letter in the mail explaining it, though it was in Thai only.

Essentially what it says is that (for an unspecified time) you will get:

Normal speed - double speed - special promo speed:

    256/128 - 512/256 - 1024/512

    512/256 - 1024/512 - 1536/512

    1024/512 - 2048/512 - 2560/512

    2048/512 - 4096/512 - 4096/512

  13. looking for advice on where to go to register car ownership. also can i register it in my name on a non immigrant visa or under my Thai wife's name.

    any advice would be appreciated.

This can be done at the department of land transport on Hang Dong Road (about a mile past the Tesco Lotus heading out of CM), and can be done in your name if on a non-immgrant visa, but you'll need to visit CM Immigration first and get yourself a letter of residence first.

If you're buying through a dealer, they can handle everything except for the letter of residence.

  14. I've had a Toyota in the UK and their "Handing Over of Keys Ceremony" appeared to be company policy. They were very particular in the presentation of the vehicle. Toyota will probably bo((ock the dealer. :D

    :D:D:D

Given that Niyom have an absolute monopoly in Chiangmai, that Thai's are heavy on glengjai even for major purchases, and that foreigners represent a miniscule portion of the new car buyers market, and on top of that are famous in Thai circles for being serial whingers with unrealistic expectations (well, most expats here are Brits), I'd say it's more than likely that the Toyota HO guy will sit down with the dealer principle and they'll just say "farang bah mak" with a :bah: and a :bah: and move right along to the next point of business..

    :o

  15. I've now bought 2 new Toyota's (one of them fresh off the truck from BKK - saw it arrive) and both had ~20KM's on them, so I'm guessing that's what they're going to have out of the factory lot. If yours needed to visit 3rd parties for accessories, 40KM does not sound terribly unreasonable. As for the marks/blemishes, that certainly is unreasonable however. I probably spent at least 20 minutes scrutinizing my last Niyom Panich purchase before accepting, but all was in order thankfully.

As for getting some type of financial benefit out of knocking it back, I'd say the chances of that are somewhere between none and fark all.

  16. What is the more accurate rate? It's strange that there is such disparity. By my calculations, there is a ten percent difference in the onshore and offshore rates across most currencies, at least the pound, dollar, and euro.

They're both equally accurate - if you change your money into Baht abroad you'll get a rate based on the respective offshore market price, while if you change it locally you'll get a rate based on the local domestic market. The latter being the obvious choice :o

The domestic market works independantly of the international market (as it does everywhere) - the only logical explanation for the disparity is that the capital controls introduced a few months ago have been effective at stopping any profiteering from levelling the rates, as is normally the case.

  17. rayw: I really don't want to get pulled into any flaming sessions (this thread is already out of control), but I think the major point others are trying to get across is that the Thai domestic (onshore) forex market was decoupled from the international (offshore) market by the BOT some months ago now, in an effort to regain at least some control over local rates. The prices you see quoted locally are totally independant of whatever rates you might see abroad. Of course the local market will still follow the basic trends of the international market, but it's not directly related to them.

If you look at my posts here, I've been quoting the ever increasing spread between the Thai domestic forex rates and the international mid-market rates. I'm very curious as to why there's such a huge spread between offshore and onshore prices even with the decoupling, as conventional wisdom suggests that the two ought to have a lot more in common, especially after profiteering has taken place.

There is an export limit of 50,000 Baht and the 30% withholding of anything over USD$20K, which puts the brakes on any institutions that would want to take advantage of the spread, but I'm sure there's some smaller investors out there who've figured out how to make 8-10% a day on the spread, so they should have some type of equalizing effect, but they don't. Which leads me to speculate that the domestic market is being sponsored - it's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Anyone want to chime in with a theory?

  18. What will be interesting is that I will sometime in the near future be heading up into the mountains where the only connection is by mobile phone. I will take my laptop and the card to see if it is still a workable proposition way up there.

    CB

I have used DTAC GPRS everywhere - it works, but the speed varies considerably. I've even got on and done email in the middle of nowhere in Isaan with 1 bar of signal strength.
