  1. ThaiGoon,

It's refreshing to see a Thai defending his people as vigorously as you do. Your passion and pride are obvious. Your ability to communicate in English is masterful. You can think, stay on topic, be relentless, rant, rave and otherwise give all of us obnoxious farangs a run for our money. I always look for your comments about what we said about your people. You are truly getting an education into how foreigners think about Thais and Thailand like no other Thai will ever receive.

Where did you get all this? Did you get while sleeping in the back of a Thai classroom, or reading comics, or playing with your mobile while the teacher was droning on and on about some nonsense no one could care less about?

    No.

You got this ability to think and communicate from some foreign nation and some foreign classroom. You are reaping the benefits of that foreign experience.

You fail to realize that to a man on this board, we talk the same way about our own governments as we talk about yours. We rail against Bush and Blair. We call them idiots when they act like idiots. We criticize our school systems for not getting better or for getting worse. We pick apart local politicians for graft, corruption and mismanagement. We do all these things in our home country.

Now, for those of us who live here, or visit here or have family here, we do the same thing. We criticize, take issue with, rail against, point out the blemishes and otherwise cause a ruckus against ignorance like we do in our own countries.

Keep in mind, ThaiGoon, that Thailand is coming up, same as all our countries came up, slowly, painfully and with much racket from our own people and those who visited.

Keep on truckin dude. I wish more Thais were like you!

  2. This sounds like a good idea. Why is it going to take 5 years to implement? Something like this could be done rather quickly, by the next school term.

From what I've observed, Thais eat lots of fresh fruits, and vegetables are part of their major dishes. Problems arise when they sprinkle sugar on everything, like on the pai Thai noodles.

  3. Hello,

I'm heading north to Udon Thani and I'm wondering about internet services. I'd like to stay at a hotel that has internet in the room or maybe a wi fi connection in the lobby. Other internet tips for that city would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

    Max

Jancondo Hotel offers free internet by way of a LAN connection in every room, Also lends you the cable to connect. I've also heard that Top Mansion offers a Wi-Fi service. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the tips!

I was able to find Top Mansion, but no website or information exists on Jancondo Hotel.

  4. So they kick out the government in an armed military coup. Then one by one, they put back those who were kicked out by force, back in charge. Can someone please explain the logic of all this?

So this guy was a close personal aid to one of Thailand's most corrupt, albeit elected, governments? And the new team is steadfast in their determination to rid the country of corruption, putting in anti corruption measures into the new constitution. Yet, at the same time, they are bringing back all the recent corrupt offenders.

I need some clarification from those wiser and more experienced in the Land of Smiles.

    Please, I'm begging you!

  5. One of the difficulties in hiring foreigners is the fact that they are foreigners. It is difficult to know the cultural cues that help access character. If I were hiring a Thai national, I'd like to have a Thai national on a panel of interviewers to help me access the person's character based on knowledge of the culture.

It is far easier for a person within a given culture to determine the kind of person is within their own culture. From my limited experience, Thais rarely bring in foreigners to hire other foreigners. Because of the top down management style here, they rarely allow foreigners to do the hiring.

I respect what you're saying but I can't accept it in this case. They (the school) blatantly flouted the law in employing a teacher illegally. The law has a purpose. It regulates the employment of foreigners. In this case, the school was seriously embarrassed. School administrators are well aware that foreigners require a work permit. This has nothing to do with being able to judge people from different cultures. I repeat I'm only referring to schools who employ illegally.

I agree totally. The schools must bear some responsibility.

  6. and yet... teachers are, by the very nature of their work, placed in a level of direct contact with children that most expats are not even close to. They are afforded a level of trust by the general public that far exceeds that given to most expats.

I would expect there to be more fallout from this trio... beyond what the first on the list generated.

I agree again. However, teachers are brought into a system that has some accountability and supervision while countless foreigners who come here and stay without documentation do not.

  7. However, the government's response to these predators slipping through the cracks is very limited.

I say those who teach in Thailand should be screened as anyone working with children are screened in the West. But if the schools are complicit in helping these phoney teachers teach, they too must be held accountable.

The two teachers nabbed for fake documents recently paid dearly for their fraud, but the school which helped them pass the forged documents to Thai authorities are getting away with absolutely no penalty.

This double standard will not solve the problem. If schools are not given an equal penalty, then this problem will persist. Phoney teachers will continue to try to ply their trade and offending schools will continue to help pass them off as legit educators.
