  1. Thailand and Cambodia are currently working hard, despite a lack of quick success, on various confidence-building measures to end the border dispute. Somehow, it seems Cambodia enjoys the game of brinkmanship at the expense of Thailand under Prime Minister Abhisit, who is trying to set things in order at home. He is calling for a new election in July after the dissolution of the House of Representative next week. Indeed, Cambodia knows how to score and hurt Thailand.

Really?! I thought the whole stirring up the borderdispute was a simple trick pulled by desperate thais in a desperate (and unfortunately succesfull) attempt at nationalize the population before an election.

I guess that would be too obvious.

    :whistling:

  2. In this vision of a "moral and democratic" society, those with proper education, connections, upbringing and "moral virtue" will rule, with or without election, and there shall be little or no place for freedom of expression, accountability and transparency. The masses have to be ruled over by "benign leaders" as well as subjugated and brainwashed through relentless propaganda into feeling grateful for everything that they don't have.

Thailand has shown again and again (and again and again (and again and again))) that it is not ready for democracy. Sorry to say that. However monarchy rule seems not to be a solution anymore, nor does a junta.

Despotism could be the answer. Not forever. Hopefully not for too long. It smells too much of Hitler and the like, but the outcome could be that after a while the thais would stand together and fight FOR democracy, instead of fighting EACH OTHERS democracy.

  3. wow, this is so strange. I took a night boat from chumphon to koh tao at 10 pm and wind guru and thai metereological site didnt mention any storm. Otherwise I wouldnt have taken the nightboat. This thunderstorm must have been ultra local as the couple of times I did wake up last night it was completely still and not a hint of a wave, and arriving early between 4 and 5 am indicated that it had been very favorable weather for sailing.

  4. "Some men aren't looking for anything logical.

They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with.

Some men just want to watch the world burn."

Works for both Reds and Yellows.... Sadly....

Let's have that election and hope that no matter who "looses" they'll understand the fundamentals of democracy and accept defeat without creating more violence.

  5. Seriously (or maybe not so seriously). What they need is to attract a different kind of tourism. Something like : "Have you ever wanted to fire a AK47 into a live crowd (ps. don't worry. We'll just blame it on the red shirts)" or : "Hotels in BKK half price. Incl free Molotov Cocktail at arrival". Maybe even a new slogan : "Visit Bangkok and paint the town red" with a Policecloned song going something like this : "Rooooxanne. You don't have to put on your red shirt!"

  6. Just for information : I had 5 back2back single entry tourist visa in my passport without overstay or extensions, and I was almost certain that they wouldnt give me a new one, so I did a lot of checking on Chulia st, penang. Both the Indians and Banana have their fair share of problems with new visa, but I decided to give it a shot anyway. I went to banana where their fee is 50 baht compared to NJ's 200. 4 of the passports where rejected that day at banana, but mine wasnt one of them. So now I have 6 b2b TR S visa in my passport. Dont know why. I just feel really lucky after reading these posts.

  7. Seriously.... I was hoping to get some info in this thread only to find 13 pages where 95% is crying, complaining etc.....

Not very helpfull. and a sad way to start out with my first post in a new forum. Maybe this info has been posed already. I just gave up reading the thread with all the whining (from both sides)
