  1. <Snip>. Krabi economy is dependent on tourism revenues <Snip>.

As indeed it is for the whole of Thailand.

How about the police making it safer for tourists?

Krabi in general is safe and as an expat resident I'm feeling the local authorities are doing their utmost to keep it safe.

  2. Golden Beach, Ao Nang Villa and Peace Laguna are right in front of the huge karst cliffs and all have decent pools and are within walking distance to the beach and numerous restaurants. Another option is the Tipa Resort.

  3. Cycling in ''Thailand'' on the ''Roads' ?????

Sorry, count me out, i want to stay ALIVE...

Cycling in Krabi province is pretty safe compared to riding a motorbike. Nowadays you see many bicycle riders here and most them wear a helmet. Motorbike riders don't ! However, I have to agree the authorities better accommodate the funds for more important issues, i.e. garbage collection, environment protection, school buses for the kids resulting that underaged kids no longer ride to school on motorbikes with 5 on the pillion.

  4. Krabi is lovely for bicycle riders, the roads are very wide and often have a shoulder to ride on. There is still not much traffic on most of these roads and many roads are going through coconut or palm plantations with almost no traffic and much shaded by the trees.

  5. I regret, in Ao Nang almost all parking lots are taken by illegal taxis, tuk-tuks and motorbike rentals. It's very difficult to find a parking lot and forget about security. Opposite the traffic police station is a narrow road going to Phuphranang Resort and they may let you park for a fee, probably 40 Baht/day.

  6. There is no river separating Nopparathara beach. Coming from Ao Nang, the beach starts with a small river and at the end is another river on which the ferry pier is located, as well. In between you have about 2 km of beach and not much people, except on weekends when the locals are going.

  7. You can easy find a house for max 10'000 Baht a month, but you won't find it online. You have to visit and search around physically. Houses in Ao Nang tend to be more expensive, but in the area of Talat Kao, Nuea Klong or Klong Thom all in the direction of Trang you'll find cheap objects.

  8. In order to benefit for a one year non-immigrant retirement visa. you have to be at least 50 years of age, have a guaranteed monthly income of THB 65'000 or at least THB 800'000 deposited on a Thai bank account. In such a case you don't need to make visa runs, but only report every 90 days to the immigration office in Krabi town and you can extend it for another year, without being required to leave to country, provided you still have the monthly income or funds available. With monthly THB 38'000 you'll be on a tight budget and if you're required to make visa runs, it even will get more serious. Thai immigration has disallowed border runs with visas on entry, i.e. just get across the Malay border and return to Thailand. You won't get in anymore and you have to apply for a visa with a Thai consulate. As of August they will also disallow visa runs by air. A dual entry tourist visa valid for 2 x 60 days is about THB 5'000, but you have to apply for it in the UK or with a Thai consulate outside Thailand.

  9. Simply, medical care in much of Thailand revolves around doctors trying to make money rather medical professionals trying to cure sick people and this manifests itself in even the best Bangkok hospitals.

I did not make such an experience. I had a cardiological treatment at the Bangkok Hospital in Phuket about 10 years ago. The doctor cured the problem and recommended me to see her tutor at the Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok and arranged an appointment for me. I did go there and explained, I had an ablation treatment under the supervision of a doctor of a famous hospital in Tokyo and produced his name card. The doctor replied, he can perform such an ablation treatment as well, but advised me to go back to the doctor in Tokyo, as he learnt this technology from him and added, he is world renowned.

  10. We had new moon a week ago and high tide mid day and this hampers the ferry operation. The biggest ferry is not in service during high tides, as the cars cannot get on it. The tides are highest during new and full moon. The big car ferry will be taken out of service for about 3 hours during high tide and this causes long queues with waiting cars.

Sorry, you went to the wrong beach. Try long beach or klong dao beach with soft and white sand.

  11. OMG ! These are going to be 25-30 hours in a bus seat. What a torture ! What scenery you wanna see ? The buses usually stop a littered parking lots and there are toilets on board for those in urgent needs.

You can bring your motorbike to the post office in Krabi town. The fee to send it to Chiang Mai is approx. 3'500 Baht.

  12. OMG ! By bus to Chiang Mai ? It's going to be a nightmare trip all in all about 25-30 hours in a bus seat. What sceneries you expect to see ? The buses stop at littered parking lots, toilet is on board for those in urgent need.

You can bring your motorbike to the Krabi town post office and they will send it to Chiang Mai. The costs are about 3'000 to 4'000 Baht.

  13. On the first crossing there are 4 ferries in operation and the fare is 100 Baht, inclusive the driver. Additional fees for passengers. At the second crossing there are 3 ferries and the fare is 70 Baht. Operation hours are from 06:00 h to 22:00 h. There is a bridge under construction at the second crossing, but completion will take another 2-3 years I guess.

  14. Yes, I was referring to Krabi airport. Admittedly, it's been 3.5 years since I was there, so perhaps things have changed.

You probably have another airport in mind. This regulation has been put into place after the opening of the new, now international terminal building. For a certain period even the drivers of the hotel buses or limousines were not admitted inside the building and had to wait outside for their guests. In the meantime they are allowed to wait inside in a designated area. There are signboards advising arriving passengers to buy bus or taxi tickets inside the building and the fares are fixed, no haggling.
