  1. 3 Months ago I turned right inside the lobby and take the next exit outside (That misses most of the taxi touts) turn right and you will see the meter taxi office with yellow / green taxis outside, they asked for 500, I offered 400 we agreed on 450. The meter was running and when I arrived half way along Nanai Rd, Patong it showed 328 if you then added the 100 airport charge then 450 is very fair, courteous drivers and the 500 baht note covers his tip if you so wish.

  2. Hi, I saw a job advertised (working for a deep mine company) doing electrical work, 12 weeks on 3 weeks off.

I wondered if anyone had any experience of working out there. My obvious concerns are health issues, crime and if promised monies were actually paid both monthly and on completion. All local airlines are banned from EU due to safety too.

    Any info would be appreciated.

  3. I know credit card interest fees are notoriously high throughout the world but some countries have different & lower rates which you can choose depending on your spending patterns. In Thailand there are no credit card options & the one I have with SCB charges 20% interest which IMO is much higher than elsewhere. If the Thai central bank want to address unfair fees &/or issues related to people getting into too much debt they should look at this. It is a huge spread from the almost 0% interest on savings accounts.

BTW. Aeon ATMs are easy to spot in Phuket during the middle & end of the month as they are the ones with the longest queues.

I did a search on Aeon's website and according to it, there are no Aeon ATMs in southern Thailand. I specifically searched for one in Phuket.

I found one on their website Central Festival - 2nd Floor, I think that website is old, I'm sure Ive seen 1 or 2 in Patong

  4. Dragonair I would describe as similar to Air Asia

No frills but gets the job done, I was just amazed that they allowed the flight leave knowing that passengers where in transit from London with their sister company Cathay Pacific. They even had my baggage on board before it departed.

  5. Hi there, recently I flew from London (LHR) to Phuket with Cathey Pacific via Hong Kong.

Due to headwinds we arrived late in HK and when I (rushed) got to the gate for the Dragonair flight it was already taxying away from the gate.

I was then told that my baggage was on-board, but was removed and was in the gates baggage area.

They offered to get me to Phuket via Bangkok that evening for an extra £400 single, which I refused. They then said we can fly you in the morning come back at 8:00am, they wanted me to pay £50 for the ticket change, but I persuaded them not to. This incurred a night in Airport hotel @ £110, food etc: and no change of clothes etc:

Can I claim at all under the EU directive I have seen posted.

    Any advice appreciated.

  6. There is no difference between getting it based upon marriage or otherwise. Being married normally would make it easier to get the non-o visa.

When get ready to do an extension of stay remember it does not have to be one based upon retirement. You can get it based upon marriage which only requires 40K baht income or 400K baht in the bank verses 65K and 800K. You could go ahead and get your extension while you are here next time instead of getting a new non-o. Then get a multiple re-entry permit for your trips.

You need to post the question about your wifes family visit visa to the UK on the other visa forum.

The type of visa or extension you have should make no difference for her visa to the UK. But it might help if you can show a reason for your return to Thailand because her returning will be the biggest requirement for her getting the visa.

    Thanks ubonjoe, really interesting.

Never heard of marriage one before, where/how do you apply for that ?.

You mention the 40K is that per month and does it have to be seen in a Thai bank ? same question for the 400K ?

    Thanks for your advice

  8. Hi All

Love all the topics, but couldn't find what was right for me. Advise please !

I return to LOS again Nov for 3 mths and my multi 'O' running out Nov.

Normally used Hull consulate for years, multi O, But last Aug I married a Thai lady in LOS.

(What benefit is there in having a marriage visa, if any)

I will be doing at least two more trips next year before I fully retire (61) & move to Ubon Ratchatani to build a house on land that we have.

The wife wants to visit UK for 3 mths with me when I go back in Feb, what would she need ?.

    Its the retirement/marriage/multientry question ????

  9. oh...... and the 4 x 90 days length of stay each (before doing a border 'bounce') was automatically provided = 15 months stress-free as earlier described....

    rgdz from ChiangMai,

    Brewsta

    Hi Brewsta

I also have been doing the Hull consulate 1 yr multi entry 'O' visa for years.

I married a Thai in LOS in August, she wants to visit UK for 3 mths, next Feb, before we both move permanent to

LOS, (Det Ubon, near Ubon Ratchatani) where I plan to build a house on land we have, and retire, though my TEFL might be of use. I am 61 year old

What visa do I ask for now, as I need one to fly back to LOS in Nov for 3 mths. I hear of a marriage visa what is the difference ?

  10. Hi

Ive flown with Qatar numerous times, excellent aircraft, service, food, drinks etc:

Doha food and drink area poor, everything else including duty free excellent.

Stewardesses are from all over the world, so language isnt a problem. Better than emirates, good as malaysia, only one better is singapore airlines.

This week on Travelzoo.com they have a Qatar flight to Bangkok, 2 nights in 4 star hotel, then flight to Phuket with 8 nights in a great hotel, then flight back to UK with air asia all for £546 ish, including pick-ups from airport I beleive.

I live in Phuket and its costs me about £460 flight only. Excellent value :):D

  11. Here's our place that we have recently finished building.

Four bedrooms, three bathrooms, living room, computer room/study, tv room for wifey and her soaps, western and Thai kitchen.

In the process of finishing off the garden but the lawn will have to wait until we get a little more rain.

    Hi

We love the house, I am just embarking on starting to build one similar but 3 bed, was going to base it on style of Government free plans No.10, or No.11, if you have seen them, with mods like add a bath in master bed etc:. Wondered what your approx costings were and how you approached it, did you source your own mat'ls, any costs as a guide any any other guides you may have on the labour side. We already have the land near Ubon Rachatani if that makes a cost difference. (Sorry if I am being too cheeky).

Would love to see more photo's of your house and maybe you can tell me if No. 10 & 11 plans have any similarity for costing.

    Best regards Keith

Sorry Keith, no emails in posts.

  12. Hi

I am an English expat, starting to build a house about 25 km North of Ubon (in the sticks) and wonder what is the best way to get TV / UK football and Internet, I am considering having a few PC's and having a small internet cafe. Is there anything suitable in that area do you know, costs, where to get the kit etc: please, any info would be appreciated.

    Keith
