  1. Anyone know about lanterns, commercial airplanes, and airport closures?

Thursday night (10NOV) I didn't see or hear any planes take off or land from CNX (I guess I could be wrong about this...)

So I thought they'd closed the airport because of all 1000s of Loy Kratong kites in the air. With planning I guess this wouldn't be too difficult, but then I think of special flights that only come in on Thursday nights (Korea to Chiang Mai).

Now again tonight Friday (11NOV) I have heard and seen 1 plane tonight.

Anyone know how they handle this? It cannot be safe to take a plane off with all those lanterns in the air. But tonight I am sure I heard a commercial airplane take off over my house.

I live near the mountain and planes either take off or land over my house, and when everything is in the other direction I have a direct view to other direction of the runway.

    Thanks.

  2. I bought a motorbike from a small local Thai dealership and he asked if I wanted to transfer the title to my name. I said yes, but then he asked for my Residence Certificate (or something similar to that name). He showed me a copy of one and it seemed simple enough.

My question is what is involved in obtaining one of these? I have a one year ED Visa in good standing and a one-year rental leased here in CM.

    Thanks!

  3. I bought my wave AT for 30,000 at the time it only done 3000 km but was clean as a whistle lots of big people complain they slide off the seat when they are riding it ,

I'm not a big guy, at all, but I do not feel safe on the Wave AT. I have experienced the sliding issue you described, but I thought it was because the bike was new or had been cleaned before I got it with some sort of slick shine.

The riding dynamics of the Scoopy are much better and there is a place to hang bags and such near your feet. I rented a Scoopy i for several months, but for reasons I still don't understand I selected the Wave AT after riding a bunch of bikes at the dealer that day. It was an error and now I am going to correct it. :)

Also, I think the Wave AT is a very jittery bike that requires a lot of my attention, and a slow entrance into curves. For an expat (me) with a few months riding experience the Scoopy felt far more solid, safe and rideable - even on my rental at the time with 12,000km.

The prices the dealer is offering are in line with comments here, so I think I will go ahead and trade my Wave AT for the Scoopy i.

  4. I'm not sure what the proper prices should be for these two motorbikes.

Can you give me feedback on where the pricing should be for these two bikes?

    1) Honda Wave AT (automatic, yes it's an automatic) with 1,650km, all original and very clean

    2) Honda Scoopy i, there are 2 choices both in good condition with 10,000 or 20,000km

These are from a local Thai dealer where lots of Thais shop and trade their bikes.

Note: I am not looking for references to other shops around town, although I appreciate the feedback, this deal is already 50% complete and I just need some further feedback of where the prices should be.

    Thank you.

  5. Rented a car this week for a few days... Avis was the WORST experience we had. You can't call the local office and when you call the number provided for CM it is actually a call center in Bangkok. I've got to hand it to these ladies, they could hard-sell and spin facts in their second language with ease! The rates were always changing, everything was extra (including each part of their multi-part insurance coverage).

I went back to my faithful standby -- Budget. They are and were professional, great cars, safety-checked, staff that can communicate (well enough) in English and management that cares and will take the time to correct issues when/if they come up.

Just my experience and my addition to the topic.

  6. I am soon to buy a motorbike. I see many used motorbikes advertised with "includes mandatory insurance through 201x".

So, my question is what is covered by the mandatory motorbike insurance?

If I buy a new bike will the dealer also provide the first year insurance and tax sticker?

What if I buy used from a dealer, any difference on the tax sticker or insurance?

And, if I buy used from a private party what is normally included?

Last question (I swear), next year when I go to renew the tax sticker and insurance where can I do that? My Thai friend mentioned I could do it at Lotus Tesco but gave no details.

    Thanks everyone!

  7. I am looking for a recommendation of a urologist in Chiang Mai who is familiar with cycling-related issues.

I know there are a lot of cyclists here in Chiang Mai (one of the reasons I moved here) and I hope someone can make a recommendation for a doctor who is familiar with the unique issues of cyclists who overdo it (like me). :)

    Thanks

  8. I am looking for a quality used motorbike in Chiang Mai.

I searched here and found an old forum thread from 2007 and 2009 with locations in the city where you can get used motorbikes with papers and insurance proof. Locations mentioned were weekend markets, Saturday and Sunday events.

I want to post the question again so that I can get up to date locations from those in the know.

    Thank you.

  9. I am moving from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. I have about an SUV's worth of stuff to move. What's the best method?

I checked with a rental car company (Budget) who wanted about 3,500 baht per day plus 3,900 for a one-way drop fee in Chiang Mai!

I would like to hire a driver and van but I don't know anyone who can provide this service.

I am asking the forum for suggestions on how to move my stuff. I would strongly prefer to STAY WITH my stuff at all times and not use a package shipping company.

    Thanks everyone!

  11. 1. consulates in the region normally only issue a single entry ED-visa and expect you to extend your stay at immigration. So this is normal.

    2. Your university will know exactly which paers they need to prepare, any questions are best asked to them

    3. Following a real University study you will get a 1 year extension of stay. Others, like studnets at language schools, only get 90 days.

    4. Yes, you need to make 90 day reports. Your extension of stay will be considered your first report, report every 90 days after that date.

Remember, if you need to travel abroad now you will need a re-entry permit to keep your current permission of stay. If you leave without one you would need to apply for a new visa all over again.

    Thank you.

So that I am clear in my understanding... If I leave the Kingdom at any time during my 1-year ED Visa I must go to immigration (first) and request a re-entry Visa OR I will have to apply for the ED Visa all over again?

  12. My Background

    • I am a US Citizen.
    • I am under the age of 50.
    • I moved to Bangkok using a Type O visa that requires a border pass every 90 days.
    • I am a graduate student at Assumption University in a 2-year plus program.

    My Issue

When I arrived some months ago my school told me I had to leave Thailand to convert to an ED visa. I checked with my Thai attorney and he confirmed this. I recently traveled to Singapore where I visited the Thai embassy with a letter from my University. I completed the forms, paid SG $100 and waited a day. When I collected my passport I received a 90-day ED Visa (full page stamp). I asked why I wasn't given a 1-year visa and I was told the embassy does not issue a 1-year ED Visa, only 90 days, and that extensions could be made at the immigration office in Thailand. I returned to Thailand and was stamped in on my ED Visa. My ED Visa expires on 18, November.

    My questions are:

    1) Is this situation normal and correct?

    2) What will I need from my college when I go to the immigration office in Bangkok?

    3) Will I get a 1-year visa for certain, or will it be up to the officer to grant me a 90-day, 1-year, or other time frame visa?

    4) Do I need to report to immigration every 90-days if I am given a 1-year visa?

    Thank you all very much.

  14. I've lived for months at a time in Bangkok over the last few years but previously only as a service apartment renter, and only as a visitor.

Next week I'm finally going to move to Bangkok full time and I want to secure a 1 year condo lease (prefer it not be a serviced apartment, but also not out of the question).

I am reading conflicting information on how long it might take to find and secure a rental condo for a 1 year lease.

I am most interested in living on the river near the BTS stops (either side) or in the Rajadamri area.

How long, on average, should it take to find, secure and move in to a place?

It seems there are plenty of rentals available. I've also read the great and helpful posts here from renters and leasers (great information).

I plan to devote EVERY waking hour to finding a place as soon as I land.

I want to do all of this in one or two weeks and I have the help of 3 Thai locals and some expats.

So far I've had zero interest from "relocation experts" who advertise in Thailand (I won't name them here). When I write these companies responding to ads they've posted about properties for rent, and tell them I'm relocating in several weeks, my e-mails and phone calls are ignored. Perhaps there are just too many properties and rentals available to be bogged down with an e-mail from a relocater like me. :)

Thank you everyone for the help.

  15. I need to ship several boxes of common household items from my home in the US to my home in Bangkok.

I'm unsure of the most cost effective way to do this. Airlines allow up to 2 bags of 50lbs for the ticket I purchased and then it's $100+ after per bag.

I have expat friends who used a "Thais Returning to Thailand" shipping service that tacks their stuff onto the pallets of Thai students returning to their home country, --but this service is very slow and may take months to arrive.

I have looked at the many other shippers and there are so many choices I don't know where to start.

I don't need my stuff in days, but less than two weeks or so would be optimal.

The boxes are between 50 and 70lbs (pounds) and I estimate there will be fewer than 5 boxes when I'm finished packing.

    Thanks everyone!

    cheers!
