  1. Strange, immigration can usually confirm to you over the phone if your visa is still valid or not. Did they say why they couldn't tell you?

Not, how you should cancel it, which is a completely different question.

Your school HR should not drag their heels on an easy question, they just need to check the records, a 2 minute job. Follow up tomorrow if you don't hear from them today.

  2. Britchick - Did you ask the two questions that I suggested yet?!?!

Without doing so, you will be no further in knowing for sure what your status is in TH! You will still be guessing and trying to chance a possible visa that you may or may not have anymore.

This just risks the potential for greater overstay fines plus a bad record. Not to mention a possible refusal of your next work permit if the authorities are not happy of such a record.

Flights and boarder runs to start a new work permit and visa for a new job are the pills that need to be swallowed if you want to work in TH, irrelevant of cost.

  3. Britchick - Speaking from experience:-

Yes, the company can cancel your work permit without having the book but it's more convenient and courteous if you hand it back.

Yes, the company can also cancel your work visa without having your passport, often the two will happen at the same time.

Usually, after a foreign employee's job has finished, for whatever reason, a company needs to do the above within a couple of weeks of the employees contract terminating otherwise immigration will be asking them questions, not happy.

I would advise you to do this:-

    1) call your company and ask the HR if they have cancelled your work permit and visa. If so, what date?

    2) call immigration to confirm if your work permit and visa are cancelled yet.

Only these two conclusions will tell you what status you are at right now, and thus what to do next.

Your new employer may want you to fly out of the country to obtain your Business visa to come back in to then apply for your next work visa and work permit (which they pay for all expenses), I'm not sure if a boarder run is sufficient, but they should confirm to you.

All the best if you want to continue in TH.

  4. Volunteering requires a work permit.

An inetrn ship doesn't require a work permit, but must be part of an education. That might even be only as part of a Thai educational facility. The internship must be reported to the government, I'm not sure labour, education or immigration department.

    Freelance require a Thai company.

Working wthout a WP (including volunteering) is punishable by a jail term of up to 5 years and or a fine of 100,000 baht.

    Cheers Mario, appreciated.

  5. Dear All,

    1) Internship employment

I have a foreign friend who is here on a 1 year O visa (spouse) with her foreign husband who works for an international company in TH.

She's been offered a job by a company and it is a great relief from some of the relative boredom of being a housewife here, so she's quite excited.

The company has said that she will not need any change in visa or a WP during her three month probationary period. However, I'm not so sure about this as I've never heard of that before.

The letter of employment that she has received by them (which she hasn't signed yet), indicates and states that the employment is an 'internship'. They will pay her a small salary in return and bonus.

In my opinion, this is not legal. Please advise.

    2) Are there any rules for working voluntarily in Thailand? Or can you just do anything if you're not being paid?

    3) Would it be easier or better to be a freelance? Does that require any Thai partner or business set up/registration? Where can I find out about doing this if pheasible?

Many thanks to all that reply...

    regards

  6. Suk 71 is ok, lot's of street food around the junction with Sukhumvit. It's generally a Thai area and lots of hookers live around there too. A two hour Thai massage which will have your head spinning is around 200baht... lovely. Suk 67 is a developing soi with three condo's there now less than 3-4 years old.

  7. Hello All,

Does any of you live in Sathorn Gardens now? What's the true rental rate. We all know that agencies usually over-price the rents, and likewise the Juristic people do the same. I looked at a 94 SqM, 2 Bed place at the weekend. Apparently there are only 3 units left to rent and they are asking for THB 57,000 / month. Beautiful facilities and fittings, but I can't help thinking that this is over-priced. Note that I viewed 10 other places that day and they too were priced from 53000 (for an old style place) to 60,000 for a nice modern condo/apartment.

Any advice anyone? I see that a number of you commented on this forum a couple of years ago when Sathorn Gardens was being built.
