  1. I've been to pick up friends several times just recently. They have changed the system slightly. You cant actually wait close to the immigration / arrival area anymore (you had to know which gate they were coming from). Now no matter which arrival hall you come out of, you are all ushered down a pathway towards exit door #3 - called "meeting point". At this point there are a couple of TV screens showing the different arrival halls and you can watch these to see your friends arrive, then a few mins later they will walk down this pathway. It can get a little crowded depending on time of day.

Just passed the main throng of people where the first TV screens are is a more open area - right in front of the elevator - that is right underneath the "meeting point" sign and there is another set of TV screens.

Its not that bad. But yes, you do have to walk another 5 mins down the length of the airport - or push your trolley. But you can easily find your friends.

i had first timers arrive (first time flying - not just first time to BKK) and they managed to find their way down to me.

Yes! I agree and can confirm that this change and information is exactly correct as of 02/02/10. Regards from PEP

I concur with the above concurrer who cuncurred with the prior concurrer. Procedure the same. A bit of a walk, but a very utilitarian airport, me likey. I was just there a few weeks back my self.

Each time Ive went to swampy, I have opted for a flat fee to either Pratunam or Khao San for around 500 baht. Would it be cheaper for a metered fare to either of these two places? I have no problem with 500, esp. at around 1:00 am. I would give my right eye for a comfortable bed at that time.

Metered taxi is around THB 350 + THB 50 (booking fee); you also have the name & registration no of the driver. Sometimes these cabs are scruffy & ACs not effective. I don't trust the others. Limos are great & about THB 900 to THB 1200, nice comfort, especially after those long flights.

  2. Keep well away from the agencies! This time of year is prime employing time .... go to the schools personally, show your resume and you might pick up a good job. Agencies are a big waste of time ..... say a lot, promise everything and don't produce!

China may well not be the same as here but if you are looking for a (well?? haha) paid job in Surat, 12 months a year, keep well away from the agencies!

Plenty of jobs out there .... just find the right one!

................... and just how long have you considered yourself an expat? :D

Anyway, forget the sarcasism, agencies are a total waste of time!

    :D

Thanks for advice South. I must be thick as a brick, as I did not see the sarcasm :) ? I'll do as you advise & approach the schools.

An expat since 1979, when I graduated. Been living & working in Asia & Africa since then, with only a 1 year period back in the UK in the last 30 years lah. An old man, but young at heart.

  3. I was working as a project manager in Bangkok, then started working in the middle east. I'm now living in Surat Thani town, near to Khun Thale Swamp. I'm a UK expat graduated Engineer & now want to work locally & could teach English, maths, science, engineering design, etc. Could anyone advise of good teaching Agencies for Surat Thani area. I'd be grateful for contact info of good agents.

I've met a few teachers in Bangkok, who do not hold any of the TEFL certificates / diplomas. They said they got english teaching jobs because they are so called native English speakers? My daughter needed the post grad TEFL diploma for teaching English in China, are such qualifications not a min requirement in Thailand?

    Cheers

  4. Every month or so, I spend one or two nights in town.

Never found a cool place to hang out.

I don't like the 'disco style with live band' nor the pubs where the music is so loud you cannot have a conversation.

Just a nice bar with cold drinks and good music. Is there such a place?

    Ivo,

    Hope that's your name?

My name is Les, & I'm a Brit expat of many years & have a place in Surat Thani, near Khun Thale swamp. I've only just moved there from Bangkok & spend about a week every couple of months on R&R. I'm also trying out bars & there are one or two with potential. Let's meet for a beer & try out these places together. If you want a session with us lads only or with wives & GFs; just lets me know. I do know a fabulous sea food restaurant & have a short list of bars some not yet tried out. Send me an e-mail; Please PM poster for Email.

    Cheers

    Les
