  1. looking for a dentist also, just cleaning and whitening and whatever else pops up. What price i am looking at? it's hard to gauge when someone says expensive on here as one persons expensive is another persons resonable or unthinkable etc.

    cheers

  2. Just to the parents out there, just because your child loves his/her school, does not mean they are getting a good education. The students i teach get an education but the pace at which they learn is so slow, i can cover the course but i feel they have the potential for much more. They are lazy and somehow believe they are hi-so because they are in the Multi-language programme, normal programme students are better behaved and more eager to learn. I teach at a governement school with very few students with farang parents.

  3. From working in the banks there are loads of different techniques. One is to place a small camera to see your pin and a simple card catcher over where you enter your card. The card catcher and the person helping looking over your shoulder is also common. I have seen ones where they have put a complete new screen etc. on top of the actual machine. I usually used one had to cover when i enter my pin. it a good thing to do.

  4. it took a while for me to get used to the fact that the atm machines gave me the moeny before giving the card back. I left one card behind once and when i arrived first i walked away only to hear the beeping on several occasion.

My mate back home had a similar expierence, he laughs at how stupid he was now. he went for a meal with his g/f but forgot cash so he left the restaurant and rushed to the nearest atm, he entered his pin and got no cash twice, then a nice lady said she had the same problem and she had to enter her pin a couple of times so he tried again, (this is where he laughs at how stupid he was) he called the women up to look at him entering the pin and told her "look i am putting in the correct pin and no cash", he gave up and left to go back to the restaurant, they got about 500 euro i think.

I used to work in bank and when a card was skimmed they would take 500 just before midnight and 500 just after to beat the daily limit. getting 1000 euro. before i left they had got smarter. they would take out 500 and lodge a forged cheque for the same amount. the person wouldn't notice their balance dropping (only their available balance would drop, and most people don't understand what that is). they could do this for at least 5 days before the first cheque bounced getting 2500 euro instead of 1000.

If this scam is only coming to Phuket now, its done well to avoid it for at least the last 10 years.

  5. I wouldn't of considered myself a friend but i did have the pleasure of meeting him on a number of occasions. i know guys he was hanging out with and who were on the scene shortly after the incident (they can be seen on the video on fox).

I think you are correct about point number one and point number two. I am not sure if he was doing much Muay Thai, he did have injuries to his arm sustained in Afganistan. he had a long scare on his inner arm. I was in freedom that night(i left at 1.3)0 i didn't speak to him but we nodded at each other (hows it going way. as i said not a friend just someone i have met a couple of times). He seemed in good form as he had always been when i seen him, the guys he hung around with are always plesant and friendly also and have been here over 6 months, if not a year and never had any trouble with anyone.

From speaking to other people in freedom and his mates, Lee made some smart ass comment to him, he made a smart comment back and it kicked off. He was getting the better of Lee before it was broken up. I have heard different things of what happened next so i won't speculate. Lee did get the knife from 7/11 and did stab him at his home infront of his g/f and fled the scene shortly afterwards. These are facts all witnessed. People who are trying to say its bullshit or that its all specualtion are just not well informed and are trying to suggest there must be more to it.

Like you said in point 4 he was a very mellow guy, i think i saw someone refer to him as a "teddy bear" and to be honest that seems a good description from what i know from speaking to him. Very friendly and always pleasent and approachable. i think your last paragraph is pretty accurate. RIP.

  6. live in Rawai and never have had a problem. Picked Rawai as it was where i spent my time when i came here first. I find the local ex-pat community ok, i don't spent alot of time with them, maybe a few drinks at the weekend and thats with some people i''ve met over the last 2 years. I keep myself to myself mostly. I rarely if ever see a fight in a bar. You swear there is never a bar fight anywhere else in phuket never mind Thailand or the rest of the world the way some go on. I am happy where i am, and i drink in pubs that from reading on the net apparently have a bad reputation but i think thats just people being paranoid.

  7. Having met Shawn a couple of times over the past month, it is very sad to hear what happened him. He really was a nice guy. To be honest when i first saw him i thought i'd better avoid him as he was ex-marine and a stocky guy and from seeing some of the ex-army guys at muay thai camps they can (more than your average muay thai guy)be a few sandwichs short of a picnic. Shawn was a very well spoken and very likeable guy.

I have heard from a few friends of his (and Oi) what happened that night and the papers stories are close to the actual events. The guy is clearly guilty, if he gets his day in court he will have no chance. I wouldn't be surprised if he kills again before he (if he) is captured. He is clearly unstable. First he picks a fight for no reason other then to proof how hard he is, then he robs a knife with the intend of using it to at least cause serious harm, he finds the guys house and stabs him infront of his girlfriend.

These type of fights can happen in any bar, in any town, in any country in the world. I don't think this has anything to do with them being Muay thai fighers or british or american. This is one nut job being as destructive as possible because he thinks he is a hard bastard. I hope they catch him and he rots in jail.

  8. I have given Nikitas a chance about 6 times in 2 years in Rawai, i have no idea why people go there apart from the nice seats by the water. I have never had a good meal there, on more than one occasion it was burned. The staff have been unfriendly and unhelpful, when i ordered manao soda and recieved a tonic water once i asked again for the manao soda and said sorry. The waitress got an attitude and returned to give me a lecture about how to properly order a drink of manao soda before then going to get the drink i actually ordered.

i won't be going there again, the only reason io gave it so many chances was the amount of people i see eating there, i think "it must of improved" but i am always let down.

  9. I am also a teacher in a school in Phuket town. It is a government school. It has not been mentioned in either of the two topics as yet. I feel from competitions i have seen and some private tutoring with students from other schools that Satree is the best school (non-international) in Phuket. I am not sure if it is unique to my school but students in EP are spoilt and are fully aware that they can do no work and treat the school as a playground and pass (possibly after a retest). The science programme kids are much nicer and eager to learn. If an EP student likes to learn there is no problem but some students in EP make it very hard to teach everyone else in the class.

There is also an attitude that if students fail that you are not a good teacher, not that the students have done no work.

  10. I passed around 13.30 yesterday, and there were checks. They seemed to be checking mainly thais, i could pass unchecked.

I also heard about a bag snatch on the first turn right on sai yuan coming from Viset in the last few days.

  11. As i said i live on 20k a month. I am happy to live on that much. If i had more i would spend more. I spend a certain percent on rent and save a certain percent. You can live a decent life here on 20k. But if i had 60k to play with i'd would have no problem spending it without spending it on women and bars.

  12. like i said mate...you haven't read the thread

if you had you would see that i said it was near paradise when i came in 91 so i haven't hated for 20 years...also stated the only since sunami has things got really bad especially infrastucture wise and lack of basic amenities which is the basic of my opinion

i also stated that i still like living here and enjoy the good that is on offer here tho after 20 years it is not easy to be stimulated by the natural beauty alone

i figure that if you last here 20 years mate your newbie exitement will also diminish..as will the rose tints

after the sunami it gradually has got worse and worse and does not live up to its ''premier destination'' profile.

why bother replying to a post if the best you can do is go along with all the other haters of honest criticism..and simply post some <deleted> against me

forum is about discussion and i have yet to see anyone discuss the facts or even agree or dis-agree

ie..yes there is a distinct lack of beachside amenities...or maybe no

yes the overdevelopement is out of control..or maybe no

yes it is very hard for people [esp elderly] to walk around ''window shopping' with no shelter from the weather and nowhere to sit and rest....or maybe no

the perpetual rubbish tip from beaches to scenic spots ..or maybe not

there you go mate...like i said not bitching and moaning....pointing out IMO some of the neglected problems that are not going to improve,,but should do if phuket wants to live up to its premier destaination dream

think about it mate and offer your own opinion and/or debate mine...thats the goal here is it not

look back through all the usual crap that gets posted and there are only 2 replies even mentioning these problems

scubba mate said ''why should phuket have better amenities than the rest of thailand?''...as i said ''because it is a supposed premier island...obvious i thought

karen turned a lack of amenities into my calling for more developement...?????

see if you can raise the usefullness of this thread by indulging in some discussion about the problems ....

I read the thread as best i could... to be honest i skimmed over alot of the shit you and grumpy were at. Its 5 pages of mostly you guys bitching and moaning at each other. I couldn't remember it all. I am happy to correct myself as i do ,now that you remind me. You u did state post tsunami that it became a shithole. That is still a long time to stay in a shithole.

I don't have newbie excitement or rose tinted glasses. Please inform me of where i have said phuket is better than it is. I only have two posts so it shoudn't be too hard to see i haven't. Infact i have said there are many problems. i have agreed that the ones you raise are issues, but i can ignore them as at present they don't effect me.

I am well aware that things change and in 20 years time alot will change for better and for worst but it won't come as a surprise to me like to seems to have for you. If i find myself hating where i live, i will move but the grass is always greener and maybe thats why you are still here.....

IT doesn't live up to its ''premier destination'' profile....... Yeah they should advertise it as a shithole, lets see how that works for them. It is what you make it or until you give up on it. What does it matter to your daily life how Phuket is billed. It does affect me so i ignore it and i seem to be happier than you for it.

Take it as it is.....i beleive that if you solve all these little problems you will create new ones until Phuket is like the costa del sol or any European or America resort area.

i don't know you obviously but you are coming accross as one of those guys who is complaining about everthing, they what the amenties and infrastucture of the West but quietness and the beauty and pace of life of Phuket 20 years ago. I don't think its possible or at least for me it is not as i don't have money to move to where my paradise is. I am just happy at the moment working and living in Phuket.

  13. thanks for the great words of wisdom matey

you obviously haven't read the thread have you ?

posting ones opinions which in this case are 100% factual are far, far removed from biching and moaning

out of curiosity because the OP did ask how long have you lived here?

No problem, i just hate to see people live somewhere they obvious hate so much and for 20 years.

I never said your facts were not correct, and being facts doesn't perclude them from being bitched and moaned about. Which you are doing....

I have only lived here 2 years.

  14. There are plenty of problems in Phuket as there are everywhere, Phuket has some of it own unique (kinda) problems but so does everywhere else.

When the bad stuff somewhere gets to levels where you bitch and moan on an internet forum then i think it is time to go. I can ignore nearly all the stuff that people have posted that is bad and therefore my time in Phuket has been great. Granted i was not here 20 years ago but where in the world hasn't changed in the last 20 years.

    Move on get over it.

  15. Rent for apartment/house with electricity and water

    Food,

    Visa/visa- run

    Insurance

    Car/bike - purchased or rented

    Petrol for car/bike

    Nightlife

    Telephone

    Internet

    Phone

I'll try but i work on a weekly budget after bike and house rental. I Live with my G/f put i'll try and work on a single male budget (late 20's) .

Rent - 7500 a month (2 bedroom house, air-con in one room, kitchen)

Bike - 3000 a month rental (will be buying 2nd hand soon)

    Petrol - 1500 a month

    Food - 2500 a month

    Drink - 3000 a month

    Electric - 800 a month

    Cable - 350 a month

    phone and other - 1000 a month.

    Internet - free in work

Thats under 20k - i usually try and spend 2000 a week after rent and and the bike. Other expenses like clothes, etc. isn't a fixed cost and i usually just cut back on the drink or the western food for a couple of weeks. I go over budget some months but i am trying to save money so i try stick to that. I am not rich so i really cannot afford much more than that anyway. Don't feel cheap either, plenty of thai familys do ok with much less. Have got used to not wasting my money, which i did at home, i am happier, healthier and all in all more content without the hassles of keeping up with the jones lifestyle of the west. In saying that if i earned more i think i would spend more but keep with the percentages i do now i.e rent is a certain % and saving would be the same %.

  16. Last wednesday morning i noticed that the countdown timer and the lights are out of sync. The countdown reaches zero but the lights stay red for about 7-10 seconds after this, while the lights stay green for oncoming traffic.

Saturday this still hadn't been fixed. I saw very near accidents the two times i went through the lights with cars coming from the sports staidum side turning right while cars on the macro side driving straight through. With lights changing every 2-2.5 munites you would thing this would get fixed pretty quick.

I womnder how many accidents there has been....

  17. i've been there but they have to order the cord and the cost is about 2500bht. They have fixed another laptop before and their service was good. Thanks for the reply anyway. Really hoping someone can lend me the cord to charge the laptop so i can see if it even works before spending money needlessly.

    .

  18. Does anyone have a spare Dell PA-13 ac power adapter cord? I just brought an old laptop from home but i don't have the adapter. I am not sure if the laptop even works. I don't fancy buying a new adapter for 2500bht before i find out if it works.. If you dont have a spare, could i borrow one to charge the battery, that would give me enough time to see if the laptop is working or can be fixed.

    Cheers
