  1. Hi Martin, I moved from Chiang Mai to Krabi just over one year ago. I had intended renting for some time to look around to buy but ... on the the second or third day driving around I came across exactly what I wanted where I wanted it and at the right price. I recommend this method of just driving around. Especially now that I have been living here very happily for over a year ... I have got to know the area withing a radius of about 5km from centre of Krabi town and I like it very much. Easy to drive not much traffic but also there are lots and lots of sois it takes some time to find so I would recommend renting for a short while and driving around and just watching for 'for sale' signs. They are not as frequent as in Chiang Mai but it is in my opinion by far the best way to find what you want. I am an elderly batchelor with Thai partner so I don't know about schools. If ther is anything else I can help you with would be glad to so so. Paddy.

  2. My Thai driving license was issued in Hang Dong Office 4 march 2004 and it expire 6 April 2016. I haven't seen any post dealing with a license like this Could someone tell me if it the same as renewing a five year license to another five year license. Thanking you.

  3. This is a question rather than a reply.

I have an Irish friend coming on visit and she will be driving my car.

It is in my Thai parner's name and has first class insurance.

Will her driving be covered by the insurance?

    Thanks for help.

Better open your own thread and not hijack someone else topic which is completely unrelated to the question you are asking.

    Respect

Sorry about that! I am an infrequent user of site and not familiar with the etiquette or mode ... sorry.

  5. I have to do my retirement extension this week and I am in a state of anxiety because of it.

Can anyone tell me what time I should go ... seems to get earlier and earlier. I don't know what to do ... I thought about getting an agent but from reading this topic I see it is not possible, it has to be the person themselves. What is the latest time I can go to be sure I get it done? And could anyone tell me if it ever happens that someone is told the Q is full?

    Any advice would really help.

I am not disabled or anything thank goodness but without seating I don't really know how long I can stand ... I think not much more than half an hour.

    Please give me some advice.

    Thank you.

  6. Has anyone experience of arriving later ... after lunch? I don't mind arriving at 6am but I am no good in Q ... always give way and not able to hold my place.

Last time I did it two years ago - even though I was there very early - the second person to arrive - I lost my place and was jostled about and felt so bad.

And the Q system is full.

In June of this year I got there about 13:45 as I recall. Was out of there in about 95 minutes. (Would have been out sooner but had to wait 65 minutes just to get my passport back). No appointment. Last June I got there about 7:50 as I recall. I was on my way by 10:30. No appointment. June is typically a quiet month at Immigration. If I was told I had to go there at 5:00 or 6:00 for my extension, I would never be able to do it. I would get an agent to do it for me.

Was it a retirement extension you were doing? Just asking because of NancyL response. She thinks it may have been some other type of visa.

  8. Is it possible to get retirement visa extension in somewhere else than where I have got my original and all extensions (about ten) since.

I live in chiang Mai and have always got my extension here but Q is full and I am wondering if I can go to Krabi where there are very few people on Queue, usually no one waiting. Or Chiang Rai or anywhere else.

Does anyone know what Chiang Rai is like for queue?

  9. When you have done everything and been everywhere and get to know something is missing ... everywhere in in everything ... there is one thing left to do ... and that is the real place ... and the true 'find'.

And that place is inside oneself.

Silent, silent, still ... inside oneself is everything.

    It speaks ...

  10. I wonder if anyone can tell me where I can buy videos of old movies in Chiang Mai?

Someone told me there was a shop in the vicinity of that street that specialises in silver - can't remember the name.

I would like to buy old movies ... like the old classics and perhaps old musicals. Perhaps movies from 60 and earlier.

    Thank you

  11. We have a nice three bedroomed house with beautiful garden eight kms from centre of Chiang Mai.

We live in a very quiet area - no traffic and no noise.

We have been living in this house for a long time so the garden is fully matured and the house is very comfortably decorated western style including full western kitchen with electric and gas cooking.

There is also a sun lounge on the roof.

We are interested in a swap with someone in Krabi or Phang Na or surrounds for a period of a few months in 2014 ... anybody interested?

My partner is a native of Krabi and we want to check out what it would be like to live close to family.

  12. I should know all this because I have renewed retirement visa many times .. but I don't ... old age and forgetfulness!!

Could someone be so kind as to tell me exactly what I need to have to renew my retirement visa:

    Passport I know.

    Bank book I know.

    Bank letter I know.

Which form? I have forgottong! Can I download it?

    Anything else?

Thanks in advance and sorry for not knowing myself ...

  13. Thanks a lot ... especially about

    withdrawing after getting letter ...

I wouldn't have thought of that.

Does Bangkok Bank give out the letter when requested or do I have to go back ... in other words will I havee to order it in advance.

I have done visa extension many times but always with pension letter from home before ... first time with bank letter.

    Thanks again.

  14. I have an appointment for Nov 4 to renew retirement visa - that is Monday. If I go to the bank for a letter on Friday Nov 1 will that be OK?

And does Bangkok Bank Thapae branch issue the letter on the day one requests it? Does one have to wait?

If I need a re-entry visa what do I do.

    Many thanks in anticipation ,,,

  15. I have been practicing meditation for many years and qi gong for just a year or two. I practice alone and am very happy with that. I have been to many retreats here in Thailand and found all very helpful.

However sometimes I am 'stuck' and would like help or advice. Sometimes I get to a situation where I am not sure - I would appreciate advice from someone very experienced and advanced.

Does anyone know of a 'guru/master' anywhere in the vicinity of Chiang Mai. I speak thai but not enough to go into the depths that would be required on these topics. So english language would be necessary.

It would have to be someone quite advanced and experienced.

I would appreciate it if anyone had suggestions.

  16. Thanks very much everyone for your help and information.

Despite what Hello Dolly says about the queue I would like to try ... does anyone have the link to where I can book on the queue?

I remember trying last year but could not get into the appropriate place as then described by someone on line.

If anyone has the correct link I would appreciate it.

I am hopeless in queues ... always end up losing my place to someone bigger and more self assured ... and with elbows!

  17. I wonder could anyone tell me what the situation is at Chiang Mai Immigration office now. I have been away for a few months and my 90 days is coming up and also my retirement is just a few monhts away. How busy is it now? Is there a queue system ... does on-line queue operate for retirement or is that finished. Can I do the 90 days by post? Would be bery grateful for info.

  18. Yinluck is a pleasant lady and that is about it. The only reason she is where she is is because she is Thaksin's sister AND because that wise man knows it doesn't matter much what you say in canvassing as long as one looks OK. The average voter doesn't understand serious issues like economics. They swallow the bait: 300 baht a day and free laptop. And it is the votes of these simple folk that wins elections.

Even from half a world away Thaksin knows how to reel 'em in.

Abhisit is a gentleman and a genius ... gents and genii do not win elections ... good guys end last.

Voters get what they vote for so ... back with the conman.

  19. I am wondering now

Eff1n2ret if I apply through an Irish Consular office if they issue an EFA FP if this is good for UK or indeed any european country or should one apply seperately?

No, it's not valid for entry anywhere else.

But I hope you understand that if your first application is for travel to Ireland, you can only apply under Irish Immigration Rules, not under the EEA provisions. You (i.e. your partner) can apply to the UK (or any other European country) for an EEA FP because you are an EEA national exercising your Treaty Rights to live and work in the EU outside your own country. Having done that, EEA law also says that you have then acquired the right to the same treatment in your own country, so you can then apply for an EEA FP to go to Ireland. If at some stage you get a FP for one of the Schengen area countries, you could use that throughout mainland EU. But I think you would have to take all these FPs in turn, not concurrently, because the principle is that you are moving from one country to another. If anyone knows of concurrent EEA Family Permits/Residence cards, I would be interested to hear.

Thanks again Eff1nret! You are very clear. You sound like a lawyer. I am so pleased with this news. It is obviously the way for me to go.

    Thanks again.
