  1. I've been living happily in the NE for the past 12 years and now considering a move further south --- winters too cold.

I would welcome any comments from members residing in the Nakhon Nayok area; general opinions or facts about quality of life, shopping, house rental, potential flooding, traffic, tourism, festivals, foreigners meeting up etc.. pm if you have any personal comments.

    You get the picture....

    Thanks in advance

  2. Exactly the same for me in Nakhon Phanom. In 2000 I lost loads of stuff going into Banglamung Sorting Office, Chonburi; but for almost 13 years in Isaan my mail has been faultless --- until now!.

I also used the Thai tracking system for a package sent to Ireland. The system confirmed when my package was posted, left here, arrived Swampy and when it went into a container which was all within 36 hours. Then it totally disappeared off the radar arriving 6 weeks later in Ireland.

Same for other stuff posted from Ireland which took 6 weeks to arrive. A letter sent from Australia 6 weeks ago -- just hasn't arrived.

Thanks to the OP for highlighting this problem, but I doubt that it will change the situation.

  3. I think it's actually in Bueng Kan Province. I don't live there but have stayed in the Kongkhamkoon Hotel on the river a few times where a group of friendly ex-pats meet up for a late afternoon beer.

I have previously posted similar enquiries to yours concerning the many towns adjacent to highway 212 and never received replies. Best way is to just hang around any these small towns and you will eventually see a lot of guys living locally.

Hey Sunset, you didn't tell him about yer flip-flops and detachable leggings.

In Thailand Airports must be 25Kl from any Border with another Country, So Mukdahan is out. There have been many, On again Off again reports about Leong Nok Tah's old airstrip from the Vietnam war being opened but I think it would have to be extended somewhat to cater for big jets. Anyway it'snly a 1 hour drive to Nakhon Phanom Airport which has a reasonable service.

This country is under marshall law and they can do anything they want to..whistling.gif

DJH77 obviously knows Nakhon Phanom Airport which is only 16km from the Laos border.

Well in my view those waters are best avoided, ever think why the Thai's avoid them, no water ski clubs, sailing clubs, dinghy racing clubs swimming clubs etc?

Up on Terra Firma we are on top of the food chain, get involved in the marine world and we are at the bottom of the food chain.

My advice is keep clear of those lakes.

Years ago there was a jet-ski and a banana boat based in Thakek, Laos opposite Nakhon Phanom and a guy still has a jet ski in a motor bike repair shop neat the River View Hotel; but won't sell it.

  7. There are small, harmless water snakes in most of the water around here, but the things to look out for are leeches of varying size and ferocity. They are present in most of the lakes and I often need to remove them from our dog after her swim.

The occasional bigger snakes are easier to spot as most I have seen swim their heads out of the water.

I think keeping to G's idea of a small cabined, towable fishing-type boat would be more advisable.

  8. I have a friend living in Ban Na Po just outside Si Songkhram. His ToT Internet connection is totally unreliable being more off than on and the local ToT office will do nothing to rectify his problem.

Does anyone know of a decent/reliable supply in this area without using the expensive dongles etc?

    Thanks.

Don't know about that particular hotel, but a few of the farangs have a Sunday session beside the pool at THE ONE HOTEL. Not too much happens in Bueng Kan other than festivals. I doubt you will get any other replies as the Farangs that live there are not on TV. One of the guys with his Thai wife has a fertilizer shop next to the Mazda showroom if you need any more info.

I've stayed at The One maybe 6 times already but this other place is further along the river.

We met an English teacher cycling around The one late Saturday morning who was chatty but had only been there 3 months and didn't know the place we meant.

I think we met the shop-owner in Nakhon Phanom maybe 2 years ago as he was touring -- other than that, thanks for the heads up on the Sunday session which we may look into once it stops raining.

  10. This is what one of my translators shows --- hope it helps

  11. We were driving around Bueng Khan Province and took a quick look at the Kongkhamkoon Hotel about 30 kms along the 22 from BK towards Nong Khai. We were surprised to find quite a few foreigners around the pool. Does anyone who stayed there or living in the area know what the attraction is for foreigners apart from the draft beer by the pool/Mekong and the cheap rooms? Does anything happen in the little town at night?

The place looked a little tired but it may be worth a pit-stop with the guys on a future motorcycle run.

Very good with quick reply to questions.

If you mean VERN, then it was he who made the latest identification & whose site I suggested a few postings back.

As for the blurry picture, it was initially my friend's and as some wag wrote, he was maybe a little apprehensive shall we say! I cropped & chopped it a little to make it larger but the definition worsened.

He's a good mate, but I would never spend a night on his farm for a gold clock.

Thanks for all your contributions; this is all free entertainment.

  13. I read the article which reported 50 centimetres -- I never saw a house around Yasothon 50 METRES long and I was there on Tuesday & Wednesday watching them build the things (photos tomorrow if I remember).

I first saw this "Festival " 13 years ago and it was frenetic. The launchers never know where the rockets will inevitably land and I guess (true to form) nobody really cares as long as everyone gets drunk & has a good time.

  14. Not sure of the relevance, but 25k from town towards That Phanom.

We have a small group of ex-pats living in the city who go for motor bike runs around the NE normally under 300 km/day. We also meet for a beer twice a week in Thai-owned bars. Various nationalities with 7 different ones turning up one New Year. So the relevance was, if we went south one day, then we could meet up around Ban Klang which is approximately 25 km from NKP.

None of us have BIG bikes, but if you're interested in Harley-type rides, then I believe there is a Thai group within the city and a bigger one based around Sakhon Nakhon.

  15. I can only apologise to Jayman for appearing to be dismissive about his posting. I can place blame on the few bottles of beer consumed earlier at the corner shop. I didn't see the link last night but now my eyes have cleared , it probably is the correct location which I will try to find tomorrow. Thanks also to SantiSuk for pointing out my shortcomings; I look forward to future helpful postings.

  16. Many thanks but it is NOT near Nakhon Phanom as I have lived here 12 years and would know if this was correct. I am looking for an (unnamed) island a hundred metres across from Tha Phanom. My friend says maybe it is only available at weekends.

  17. No I don't, but I don't think any of the islands have names as most only appear once the water level drops. I only know one person who has seen this service and he never used it. He told me you drive straight past the temple without turning the 90 degree right to Muk and go along there maybe 2 kliks. I have no other replies.
