  1. The lesson of Thaksin is very clear and very needed, when he rose to power, nobody questioned or scrutinized how a former Policeman could become so rich so quickly. He was hailed as a saviour like a fat person sees the latest fad diet or magic pill.

    ..And therein lies the rub.

What makes you think anything has or will change? As far as I can tell Thailand is still now, always has been and always will be a patriarchal society. Thais admire rich, powerful, lucky, etc...it's an ingrained thai and thai-chinese thing.

You think all those PAD supporters with their civil service jobs on 30,000 baht per month salaries and their Mercedes Benz cars are opposed to corruption? No - just Thaksin form of corruption. They don't see the contradiction. The Bangkok middle-classes had a nice little earner going for them until Thaksin came along with his inconvenient huge electoral mandate given him by 'poor' people.

Forget your Western views of transparency and fighting corruption...it's all lip service. Nothing will change. It will always be who you know here and who you suck up to that will map your success or failure in Thailand.

You have a clear understang of Thailand. Spot on, I totally agree.

  3. SUVARNABHUMI SAGA:

Airport will open late, PM admits

Launch date for Bt150-billion gateway to be delayed up to eight months

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday admitted for the first time that Suvarnabhumi Airport would miss its scheduled opening on September 29 by as much as eight months, due to delays in several major peripheral projects.

The job will only be half finished on September 29 and will be fully completed three months later, he said.

    --The Nation 2005-07-29

Really don't understand what all the negative comments from the Farangs is all about!

As of September 29, completion of the remaining "half" of the airport will only take 8 months!

Lets see, using my grade school (cut the pie into 2 equal parts) arithmatic and based upon the fact that it will only take 8 months to complete the construction of the remaining half then, what is the problem? Now, thats impressive!

(8 months + 8 Months = 16 months) You can't tell me it is not impressive to find out a project of such magnitude will be completed from start to finish, in a mere 16 months! :o

    Wow! Wait! :D

  4. QUOTE (somboon @ Sat 2004-03-13, 16:52:23)

You wouldn't expect much more from the French would you

    NOPE....WOULD YOU ?

    \I wouldn't....would you ?

Pray tell; Dr and Somboon, what Nationalities are you blessed with?

Bruno has asked for other people to assist him in effecting a change at the Embassy of France in Thailand. Why the wise ass comments in return? If you encountered a similar situation at your own respective Embassies, would you appreciate the sort of helpful idiotic comments (Quoted Above) you have offered Bruno?

Is it really necessary to belittle Bruno and all French people to get your rocks off?

  5. The budget broadband service is a response to the Information and Communications Technology Ministry's policy to eliminate the ``digital divide''.

Any connection which does not access the Internet Internationally does NOT even begin to address "eliminating the digital divide"

If access only permits local access then, this is similar to being half pregnant! The Internet is intended to alow for the sharing of information and ideas, not only to look at one's own belly button.

  6. Unless this no longer becomes a public meeting place for open discussion then, how can we consider this a forum?

With the exception of rule #5 which is written and detailed in Thai Law as illegal, I see little reason to start turning the current forum into something being hosted in the People's Republic of China.

Please, Thailand has a democratic Constitution! Why attempt to go beyond what is allowed under Thailand's Rule of Law?

    Respectfully submitted,

    Serge
