    If you don't mind, I'm sure many posters would be interested in the costs involved:

    i.e.

    1) What did the car cost you in the UK (or UK Value).

    2) What did the Customs value it at? and what did you Pay (i.e. 10% of what ??) etc etc ?

    I might be very interested in doing the something very similar...

    Import licence stated the value at 300 GBP so that limited C&E involvement. Then add CIF (Car value + Insurance + Freight) and apply 218%. Thats what C&E will pay to the goverment, 118000 THB in this case.

    Tea money is what you agree to and not able to discuss openly as it's illegal.

    The book cost 20,000 THB and the car reistration may be changed to any province now - at the moment its in Rayong as being one of the most "Friendly" licence departments.

    The car may not be sold for 3 years - but it will never be up for sale so it really doesn't matter.

    450,000 THB might be mentioned elsewhere as the total cost?

    The importer may have accepted this cost prior to importing the car and felt the end justified the means?

  2. Most of the advice is spot on - do not try unless you have excessivley deep pockets and are also well connected to the highest level of Thai customs.

    As advised - check out the threads - read the nightmares!!

    One guy did manage to import a classic TR6 - that was in need of an 100% renovation. Consequently the magpie attraction wasn't there.

    He was prepared to pay the price which turned out to be much cheaper than renovating the car in the UK due the Thai labour costs being so comparitivley low.

    Contrary to advise that the "Book" would be a magor hurdle - this in fact waas the easy / simplest part.

    One exception is to "Temporary" import the car - you will need an import licence from the Commerce department and then you need to loadge the import duty with Customs - said to be refunded when the car leaves the country. Even so - you are only allowed one year entry and would anybody believe that Customs would actually give back the 218% import duty???.

    One avenue (Unexplored) would be to try a temp import with say a Malaysian registred car??

    For example - I will be doing the reverse in that I am taking my Thai registred car to Singapore and back. As in Europe - I will need international insurance and the car will have a visa stamped in my passport alongside my personal visa - so I leave the country and the car MUST leave with me.

    Again - as other members point out - it's easier to pay the man his money and buy a car in Thailand !!!

This car ws shipped over in this condition June last year.<br>Very undesirable.<br>Customs still cost money as did the import licence, however the car now has a book and this (The book) was very reasonable and easily achieved.<br>You just need to keep the MAGPIE attitude in mind with the customs.<br><br>Everyone will tell you it's not possible, but it is, for a price.<br>So ts down to how much you are willing to pay.<br>ALL cars require and import licence no mattr what their age.<br>The import duty is based on engine size along with horsepower and the age of the car.<br>In the case of the TR6 this is calculated at 218 percent allowing for a 90 percent reduction due to its age.<br>But then there WILL e T money too.<br>It's upto you - Thai speak.<br><br>It can be done - good luck

  5. If I'd spent all that money I'd want a BKK plate to make sure it was in the main system.

    Is this a legit registration or is it like a 60K under-the-table imported bike reg ? .....Rayong and Prachinburi are known for dodgy (motorbike) regos,

    Still well done to whoever for getting it here and registered, whatever the route, show it can be done :)

    Once you have a book - you may register in any province you want - BKK included.

    Nothing at all dodgy - the plates are issued by central goverment - end of story.

    Saraburi is the other "Easy" province BTW.

    The book could not be with held - import licence and import duty paid doc's are all present.

    As the car is "As new" or better and was re-built by a proffesional engineer (Report to hand) along with the car being driven from Sri Racha to Rayong without incident, the licence department only weighed the car (900 Kg) stating it must be OK as it was driven 60 k and arrived safely.

    Yes - it can be done and also well done to him !!!

    He states all costs for license, import duty and blue book = 490K THB - tea money included.

    Shipping from UK inc insurance and internal shipping = 60K THB

    Value of the car in Thailand - who knows - its not for sale !!!

  7. The guy in Sri Racha with the TR6 picked up his plates yesterday.

    Here is a picture of his 35 YO classic - nut and bolt fully restored.

    He is running with the tonnue cover - also has soft and hard tops - both factory originals. Soft top to re-do in matching trim with the interior.

    UK have valued the car at 30K GBP (This is a UK value) for insurance purpose.

    He admits that in the current condition it would never get past customs - but then he could never afford the 280% duty in its current condition.

    apperently there is another six in Phuket??? - according to Thai commerce - imported in 2008.

    Indeed a nice car - he takes it to pattaya today for the re-trim and sound system.

When the Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement entered into force on 1 January 2005, Thai tariffs on Australian wine were gradually reduced from 54 per cent to the current 28 per cent, giving Australian wine an immediate competitive advantage over wine producers from other countries which attract a tariff of 51 per cent. The import duty will phase down by four per cent each year to reach zero per cent by 2015.

    There are relatively high tariffs on imported wines. In addition to import tariffs, imported wines are subject to four different tax systems:

    • Excise tax – value-based rate at 60 per cent
    • Municipal tax – 10 per cent of excise tax
    • Value added tax (VAT) – 7 per cent
    • Health support project – 2 per cent

    Excise tax can be calculated by on the cost, insurance and freight (CIF) value or by volume basis (per litre). The higher excise tax calculation is used as a base for applying the municipal tax and VAT.

    Same article also says that...

    "Only a Thai company can register a wine and apply for an import permit. Therefore you must appoint a local importer/distributor to handle the importing and government formalities."

    Which also might explain why prices are kept high, wonder if Thailand will ever have a monopolies commision...

    Sure - but as with other items - you are able to obtain a import licence from the ministry of commerce - also for a price??
