  1. Very simple

Retired and got 800k in the bank to support yourself and get you home if it goes tits up ?  Visa granted.    Health/accident Insurance up to you but stupid not to have IMO

0ver 50 and either don't have, or don't want 800k in the bank etc ?  Must have proper health/accident insurance for Thailand so Thailand does not have to pay all your bills.

Personally I would rather my paid up taxes went to better causes than patching up and sending home yet another pisshead after his 10th motorbike crash.

That said. All this exposure will turn everyone you meet into an insurance agent with the best deals to offer. Wait and shop around.

  2. Quite an interesting thread in respect that most of the rare points I would have made are covered.

Now I know I will get shot down in flames for this oversimplified model.

Force registered rent paying and therefore tax paying vendors within shopping malls rather than street stalls to cap prices? Of course they will drop quantity in accordance and then have to suffer the burden of further increased prices of stock should they occur. This will turn them against a govt they may, one day, have a choice to vote for. The consumer will be unhappy that they are getting smaller portions because of the scheme and also be peeved. Would it not be more sensible to issue vouchers to people on minimum wage thus winning their hearts and in the minds of said vendors increase business as now those people they might not have seen before will attend so they are happy with increased business not realising that they are going to get taxed on it as quickly as they earn it in some way or another as, of course, they will have to declare those vouchers against sales to collect; revealing something close to actual taxable figures for a change.

  3. How it went without being noticed? Fairly simple. There is an empty back road from the house that avoids all the residential properties in the soi and the main road of the village. Most of the neighbours work and/or have social lives so easy to time when nobody around or asleep.

  4. Bunch of BS? I know the property well as I rented it myself for 3 years and was a regular guest there of the previous tenant who moved out in march. So I know exactly what was in there. The stuff that was moved in was driven in truckloads straight past my living room window as I live just up the street. So, yes, people did see the stuff.

A lot of effort for plates and pillows agreed but many times the value of the deposit in stolen goods is a nice little earner. Tv's, stereos etc etc.

Landlord not lax just trusting by nature.

The storage stuff belonged to the tenant.

Back to the BS issue. I can understand with few posts some might think I am a troll. Believe me I am not.

  5. A neighbour of mine has recently been scammed by the tenant that rented one of his houses. The story seemed familiar from a while back so I confirmed the MO and description with another friend. Seems there is a pattern emerging.

European guy, medium build, Thai wife that does not speak AT ALL. Probably late 40,s or early 50's. Drives an E220 merc in dark blue with lorimar wheels and a badge that says 'Turbo' along with the normal decals in chrome. Wears a bandana or baseball cap most of the time. Accent European but hard to place. Could be German, Swiss or Danish. Owns a ginger cat. Claims to have a new property office in Cha Am and a bike business in Phuket plus some kind of business in Udon Thani. Gives it the size twelve with paying the normal month up front plus month deposit in cash. Does not come through an agent for obvious reasons. Any agent worth their salt would have passport and ID card copies as part of the client profile and would make him traceable.

Moves in nice as pie then a huge amount of furniture including multiple computers, tv's etc turns up on the basis of storage. All is good so the landlord leaves the tenant to enjoy the property until next rent due. The guy takes everything of any value. TV's, stereos pictures, bed linen, cutlery and crockery, right down to the Buddha statues on the inside spirit house. Leaves all the aircon, fans, water into the pool running for several days so the landlord will not suspect. Massive electric bill of course and an unrentable property left behind with quite some internal damage done to the internal walls and electrics.

OK there was a deposit but it amounted to about a tenth of what was stolen plus the damage and lack of income whilst things are being put right.

Police reports have been filed but no joy as yet. Any info, to pass on to the authorities, would be appreciated by the aggrieved parties should anyone come across this person or have any information of other similar incidents.

  6. Oh dear joker

You took my post all wrong. Having re read it I accept that Guy lakemens way of putting it was far better and ,in fact, my point. So I publicly apologise on the forum if my post has been read as leaning the tactic towards only Thai people. It is of course pretty much worldwide.

As for your assumptions, which I may be reading too much into, I am certainly no whinging expat and actively avoid the company of such types. I was fully aware of what to expect when I made the decision to stay here and have never regretted that decision. I embraced the fascinating culture here long ago in an attempt to understand it and get along better. I would think this the wise thing to do in any country. As for forcing me to stay? You would have to drag me out of here kicking and screaming.

You mention "tool" expats. I have met many. Normally narrow minded fat sweaty sex tourists polishing barstools with their <deleted> from 9.00 am until they fall over talking utter rubbish all the way.

Exploiting the economy? Well I have worked for a living here but at least 80% of my income came from foreigners and with the exception of a few overseas holidays over the years it is spent here.Did I exploit?

Exploiting the women? Please elaborate on how you think this applies to me.

I do have to concur that the behaviour of a lot of expats can be obnoxious, embarrassing and at times downright offensive so I understand your frustration with such types as I feel it myself and therefore avoid them.

As for complaints whilst there are day to day frustrations living here they are simply a little different to frustrations elsewhere and easily got around if you excercise a little patience and understanding.

I do however stick to my point that there are eyes on that money that want a peice. This however is a human trait far from unique to this country

  7. Call me a cynic if you wish

Brilliantly typical Thai plan. Create a crisis, pretend you are doing something about it then queue up with the others angling for your share of the cashola based on all the work you have pretended to do and never mind the implications of your actions. That said, when the money,if there is any left by now, gets released there WILL be squabbling.
