  1. Wow! what a wealth of info! Many thanks to everyone for such an informative response.

I did go to Supot but the only Genny they had was 2Kw and was not a Sakari.

Anyway, no one said that the Sakari was rubbish so I will continue my quest in that direction.

    Thank you

    Spindle.

  2. There was some discussion a month or so ago regarding generators and it was mentioned that Homepro

supply a Sakari generator which would certainly meet my needs.

The one I'm interested in is the EC3000 CXS and I wonder if there is anyone who has any experience

with this model and any views regarding reliability/spares etc.

I think that it is made in China and might have a licence built Honda engine, but can't be sure.

    It produces about 2.8 Kw.

Also available is a Honda built Generator which is around 5000 Baht more but

does not have electric start and only produces 2Kw which will probably end up around 1.5 Kw but

knowing how reliable the Honda is I am in a dilemma as to which one would be best..

I do not need automatic switchover and it will be wired in to some of the house circuits. I'm a bit worried that the power produced by the Honda may only just be adequate for some lighting, a fridge freezer and water pump.

    Grateful for views please.

  3. I'm sorry, didn't realise that it was your attempt at humour!

Maybe you were only ''jesting" but why do you think it was funny?

And yes i found it offensive (That's if I managed to interpret your post correctly).

How is being offended by your so-called humour Trollish?

  4. what anoys me is that allot of theyse so called strays have owners but they let them wonderabout in the public and chase people and l in the middle ofthe roadthen they get angry if there dog gets kills or stoned or in a fight with another dog. puts the word stupid into a whole new catagory

A good reason why some people just can't hack it when they decide to move to Thailand.

i can handle it. i take the rough with the smooth. i get angry just like the thais do but the way i deal with my anger is different.

i have to throwstones at dogs in order tostop getting bit.that is not evil. thowing a dog from the rood of a nack of a pick up for fun is evil and i do that sometime due to evil value. i di notspend 3 years at evilschool to not be evil.

Are you Trolling Big C? Hope so because if you're not you could probably do with some help.

Do you really think that other members of the forum are interested in your statement that you would throw dogs off the

roof of your pickup for fun?

  5. OP never gave any feed back, but doing a google search they are available in Thailand !!! I am sure Supot would source if someone gave a confirmed order... they have all kinds of internet resources and catalogues in the office.

I think he wanted to avoid laying pipe with cable underground wink.png

    My hands are duly smacked!

    thanks for all your responses

I took your advice SJ and all the other posters visited the various shops and really a solar pump was not going to shift 10k litres an hour and in any case would have to be ordered from abroad.

Yesterday (hence the lack of response) I managed to get a reasonable pump from Supot.for just under 2k Baht

I have had to give up my original quest to try and get away without a cable.

  6. I agree, the care of dogs has got a lot better in Thailand over the last few years... and not every dog infested... I even know Thai's who wash their dogs and cats to prevent flea and tick problems. Painting everyone with the same brush .... again....rolleyes.gif

You can wash your dog twice a day if you like, as soon as it dries it will have ticks again. That's just the way it is here.

Where on earth do you get your info from? Not based on any experience for sure. methinks you are trolling.

I presume you are not directing that comment to me??

Perish the thought! not at all

  8. Here we go again!

Exactly how many people have died of Rabies on this Island?

The poor bloody creatures have a hard enough existence here as it is and many people here need little or no excuse to increase their misery.

I think that scaremongering doesn't help one bit and only a teeny bit of commonsense is needed

if it is felt necessary to approach a stray dog. All the years I have lived here i have never seen

a rabid dog. Although in all fairness I don't go looking for them but I do make contact by feeding the starving ones hanging around 7/!!.

It might be worth remembering the massacre that took place on K. Phangan a few years ago when

the authorities poisoned ALL the dogs, even those which were weaning. and those ones who belonged to residents. They did the same on Chong Mon and many of the beach characters were cruelly put to death.

The Samui Dog Rescue are to be thanked for taking on the responsibility to try and care for these these unfortunate creatures.

  9. Nice Photos

    Looks like a baby one.

We have had three, two in the garden and one under our sink over the last 2 months. One of them was

over 2.5 meters long. Beautiful markings. I think that they grow up to about 10 meters and lay over a 00 eggs. Probably explains the lack of cats and rats around here!biggrin.png

  10. I've not seen a solar powered pump, but then never looked, but might suggest you try Soput (Suput?) Electrical shop, between Bouput and Maenam (has a large Philips sign on the roof...and concrete people at the entrance!!! ) left side of road coming from BP.....

(Closed Sunday's BTW in case you have an urge to head out today!!!! )

.... they probably have the best source of electrical stuff around... could be worth a try.... ?

    How small is small ????

To lift water up, with any amount of reasonable flow, would need to be a reasonable sized pump and power supply.... if looking for just a trickle you might be OK??? smile.png

OK, Thanks. I'll give them a try today.

  11. i wish to install a solar powered pond pump for a relatively small pond with waterfall. A Mains pump and connection is not really practical.

Does anyone know where I can purchase one please? Any views, prices etc very welcome.

    Thanks!

  12. Its obviously not easy with the type of ground and flooding too.

But I suspect that fund mismanagement and corruption by Thaksin is the reason we have these problems in such frequency and severity. Its sort of ironic and also a sad indictment of anti-DP rhetoric, that people are so quick to talk-up the short 'airport seige' by PAD as being a huge blow to the airport functioning as a profitable entity, and the siege's impact on tourist confidence, when in fact the protesters were there for eight days, insignificant compared to all the closure and delays for reparations caused by mismanagement during construction, and PAD were protesting to remove Thaksin's corrupt regime, the very same regime who had robbed money from the construction of the same airport and led to it being an ongoing safety concern years later.

Dangerous runways discourages tourism far worse than eight days peaceful sit-down protest does. It also had over 60 structural faults when it was first opened over a year late, coupled with the flawed runways it doesn't inspire confidence at all.

If it is true that nepotism rather than construction safety-standards determined who Thaksin gave the contracts to, and the money was indeed spent on things other than the airport, then this should be investigated by the current PM, his sister.

    ermm.gif

Agreed. What will happen if "Swampy" looses the standard of an International Airport. Back to DM then?

The airport has never been certified except for a six month temporary certificate that was issued be the local aviation ministry for testing back in 2006. The airport, especially the electronics, backups and safety, will never meet international standards and will never receive international certification. The official Thai attitude is if you do not want to use the airport, don't. It is an economic reality for the airlines and everyone is hoping for the best. Everyone just assumes that the airport has proper certification. In reality no one is working towards getting it officially certified.

It is probably time to stop blaming Thaksin and inquire as to why the many subsequent governments did not fix the problems.

Explain please. What do you mean by certification? And who is this "local aviation ministry"?

Have you ever heard of ICAO? If I understand correctly you are saying that airlines are operating illegally!

also what do you mean by electronics not meeting international standards/ What electronics exactly?

I'm not sure what you are talking about and i suspect that you don't either. smile.png

However I totally agree that the whole airport reflects corruption on a massive scale.

  13. An agreement between Hun Sen and Bangkok Airways in 1997 gave the rights to Bangkok Air and Cambodia's national carrier to fly between and Siem Reap and bagkok. Siem Reap Airways was the national carrier for Cambodia until it basically went bust. It use to fly Bangkok to Siem Reap. The national carrier for Cambodia is now Cambodia Angkor Air ( CAA ) This company is 51% Cambodian government and 49% Vietnam Airlines. At the beginning of 2011 there was hope that CAA would also fly BKK to Siem Reap route. The are a number of articles on the net stating this. .This link is one

    http://khmernz.blogspot.com/2011/02/end-to-bangkok-airs-monopoly-is-welcome.html

To this date they have not. They fly domestically in Cambodia and to Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Google, Siem Reap Airlines are a wholly owned subsidiary of Bangkok Airways and operate to Siem Reap and Phom Penh. As stated in my previous post many of the BA aircraft carry the SR insignia but keep the Thai registration. They have not gone bust.

    Read what this link states

    http://en.wikipedia....s_International

Accepting the fact that this subject is probably only of interests to Dr. C whom I think has had his original question answered, and without wishing to prolong it any more ....try tapping up SR Airlines on the net, you can make a booking today. It will however be operated by BA.coffee1.gif

  15. How many we up to?

    Don't you have fingers? rolleyes.gif

Left them in the UK, don't like bringing them over because it wears the batteries out and I may need them at some stage in the future.

It's not looking good is it.

Au contraire my friend...there will be a piss up....just a much more intimate one! biggrin.png

    Good idea Smokie

    Yep, I'm in.

    Back in Samui 3rd.

Any ideas of dates? The last gathering I went to was at the Emerald which was great.

  16. Wow you are paying 3,500bt per month?? I pay 799bt/month with TRUE for 8mb download and 1mb upload. Speeds on http://speedtest.adslthailand.com/ are:

    1649084689.png

Strange though because I get lower speeds to the Thailand servers?

Actual download speeds vary but downloading files from USA i get about 700kbps - 1.5mbps. So I would say no, the internet in Thailand is not broken, just dodgy connections and wiring in alot of places....

  17. The idea of an Airport on the west side of Samui is ludicrous.... in my humble opinion....

Stop and think about the extra traffic having to head to the other parts of the island.... The taxi drivers for one, will have a "hay day", charging people to get to Chawang for instance..... laugh.pngthere won't be much saved!!!!blink.png

Traffic is bad enough at times, driving through Maenam or Lamai... for those wanting to get to the centre of the universe (AKA Chawang!!!) rolleyes.gif

The quiet side of the island gone forever too....... sad.png

Yep, then add the fuel farms, the terminals and all the infrastructure which is already in short supply...water, electricity and waste disposal.

The list is endless and will mainly benefit those who presently own the development land.

No justification whatsoever can be made for siting another airport on this island. bah.gif

  18. Why not buy out BA and extent the runway out into the bay. Samui really needs a runway to take large international aircraft.

You would have to offsett the runway from the Threshold at the Southern end by about 10-15 degrees so that it would be more a NW alignment rather than Northerly.this would enable heavy departures to meet the obstacle clearance criteria (big Buddah and Koh Som). It would mean cutting through some areas of Bangrak and require traffic control across the main road. In my opinion very feasible and nothing that a good Civil engineer couldn't sort out..biggrin.png

Ahhh ... traffic control. That, sadly, is where it all falls apart. Have you seen these guys at traffic lights? Or the roundabout? And some of them are pilots!w00t.gif

    A whistle trying to control a 747-400?laugh.png

OK raise it as per Azores and have a tunnel under the runway!

And nothing can go wrong..go wrong
