A very reluctant notice, but the CK Music Fest scheduled for 30 January 2021 is postponed for 3 months. The organizers are deeply sorry for delay. ...The current threat of Covid-19 has created an air of uncertainty about official permits being cancelled, with the subsequent withdrawal of funding, such that they cannot guarantee a successful event.Very reluctantly then, the event has been rescheduled to Saturday 24th April 2021.They apologize deeply for the inconveniences this will cause.Full refunds on tickets & shirts purchased in advance will be given.Hotel bookings can be transferred to the new date, or refunded by contacting the hotel concerned. They believe that the coast will be clear by Saturday 24th April & the event can go ahead without any issues. For the event on 24th April the format will change slightly. The same bands, plus a few more. It will feature multiple small stages along the new river foreshore, with the main stage at the Tha Pha Tan Pier. As such it will not be a straight concert, but more a delightful riverside music festival. Also no registration or entry fee will be required for the postponed event, so it will be a win win.The local CK organizing team thank everyone for their understanding & apologize for the postponement, but believe this is the best solution due to the current uncertain situation.

2. RibbindaSky (CNX)
3. The Multiple Standards (CNX)
4. The GG Band featuring. Por North Gate (Saxophone)(CNX)
5. Midnight Ramblers
6. Chiangmai Blues featuring Chart Bebop (CNX)

The stage will be set up right beside the river with some top musicians beating out a few tunes.
It will be a unique event right beside the Mekong river & not to be missed.
There is nowhere on the MEkong you can do something like this, because everywhere else involves a sandy river bank & track down to the river!
This is something special.

"The heavy rains have been blamed." Yeah, that and piss poor construction to begin with.
The construction there has been pretty damn good for many years.
If you have been there on that road you probably wouldn't say that.
The terrain there is incredibly rugged & steep & the road itself is quite amazing, built the way it is on the side of a mountain.

Suggestions on a foreign website?
The Huffington Post ran it first I think, & its circulated far & wide since then.

You might want to check out the GT Rider Mae Sa - Samoeng Loop map as it has quite a few of the places on the map, & give you a bit of an idea where everything is out that way.
Anyone know where to get one of these maps?
Most bookshops in Chiang Mai should have it.
Suriwong
Backstreet
Gecko
Bookzone
Lost Bookstore
On The ROad Books
+ a few of the motorbike rental shops.
Its probably the best map for the immediate Chiang Mai environs, not just the Mae Sa Valley Samoeng Loop.

John Equid long time resident, passed away in Melbourne last month
From what I can gather John had a battle with cancer & finally lost his fight on 9th May 2014. He was 61 at the time.

Yikes very sad to say Geoff Walton is gone.
What a star he has been for Chiang Mai over the years - 30 years I think it was.
One of the original writers & hacks in Chiang Mai; he was always polite & reserved & wiling to help anyone with news & info about Chiang Mai &/or Thailand to help them on their way.
Geoff was an absolute treasure of info on Thailand; if anyone helped put Chiang Mai on the map writing for tourist mags it was Geoff.
Guidelines would not be where it is today without Geoff. He also helped proof read & edit numerous other books & articles for publication in the North.
There will be a tribute to Geoff Walton night at the Writers Club on Friday 13th, starting at 8.00PM.
If you want to help celebrate Geoff's life in North Thailand, pop along.
Good friends of Geoff are invited to chip in 300 baht each for a kitty at the bar to pay peoples first one or two drinks. Geoff would approve especially considering it is Friday the 13th.
For more info contact Bob Tilley at the Writers Club.

There's some rough trip planning ideas for riding North Thailand on GT Rider, under tour options in the Thailand section, that may help you formulate a route.

No bikes allowed across the Friendship Bridge from Nong Khai to Vientiane. Closest crossing is Bueng Kan, way north, 120km. Coming back is OK, though. (Some have reported reopening of Friendship bridge TO Laos in 2011, but I have heard recently that Laos has closed it to bikes again).
The Friendship Bridge at Nong Khai is open to bikes & has been again for over a year. Have a look at this Long Weekend Getaway for a trip report crossing the bridge earler this month. The trip Bangkok -Luang Prabang & return.
-
I rode into Laos across the Friendship Bridge a couple of weeks ago without any problem. The Nong Khai / "Vientiane" Friendship Bridge seems to be ok nowadays, but not the others.
They dont issue ITP for motorbikes anymore. From memory they stopped 2 + years ago.
Not all the roads in Laos are crap, there are some extremely good ones.
At the moment Vientiane - Pha Tang, (north of Vang Vieng) sucks, as does Oudom Xai -Pak Mong, but a lot of the other asphalt roads are super.
Hope this is a help.

Wow. What a shock Blinky Bill dead?
I never thought that would happen to Ian. He was always around, a rock, someone with advise & knowledge. First hand experience. Someone you could rely on.
Ian was a big guy alright & had a heart to match. He always left an impression & if you ever needed anything Ian would help if he could. More than once he "politely" told me to pull my head in, but over 27 years he was always a good mate you could rely on.
Ian had one of the first high powered bikes (ZZR1100) in Chiang Mai, as was befitting such a dynamic character; & I think maybe he holds the record for Lampang - Chiang Mai; & that was a night ride with the Snail, after a gentle ride down to the Lampang Riverside for a few quite ales & a chat "for something to do on a hot night. He dumped that ZZR numerous times, but never semed to get hurt. He was a tough man, a survivor & one you always thought would be around forever, to help out & give you advice. That he has actually died stuns me. He will be sadly missed.
My condolences go to his family in Indonesia, plus in Chiang Mai ex wife Bee & daughter Patty.
RIP mate. You were a very special big hearted guy.

It rained in MHS Wed night & on Friday heavily in Mae Chaem.
I came back from MHS on Thursday

David, when you take a trip, you take TRIP.
Last one was a few years ago - the Hongsa Stuff up when I broke my left shoulder - the head of the humerus in 4 pieces = Ouch.
If you click on the links & reports you will see the dates over the years.
IMHO the best to go is early-mid Feb when the water is low & you can see all the amazing rocks in the river.
Go in the cold season & I think that the fog will kill it so it cant be done in a day = you have to go slower & overnight in Pak Beng.
Go in wet season, the river is high & flooding, dangerous & you wont see much just rain & jungle covered river banks.
-
I’ve done several Mekong boat trips, the first Pak Beng - Houei Xai n 95.
My preferred way to go now is hire your own boat, put your bikes & family / friends on board & sail down the “Khong from Houei Xai to LPQ in a day.
The Mekong Boat & Lost Rider Trip.
Mr KTM Version of the Laos Trip.
Select your own boat. The VIP boats can comfortably eat 0 people. You can take out half the seats, put in a half dozen bikes. Sail down the Khong to Luang Prabang, ride around with your wife / g/, then fly them back to Cnx & you can ride out via Phonsavan – Vang Vieng – Vientiane- Loei – Chiang Mai.
You need to sleep in Houei Xai the night before, with the bikes loaded on the boat & the paper work done at the port before time so that the shipper can get away at 7AM before he port officially opens. Otherwise you will struggle getting into LPQ before dark, which is a NO NO.
Bikes on board & moored for 45 minutes downstream for the fog to clear through a treacherous stretch of rapids
The end of a slow start & late arrival in the dark
The disembarking plank
Gently gently disembarking..
