  1. Hi there,

Hopefully one of you may be able to help us.

We are due to fly early on Wednesday morning and the person already lined up to look after our cat has fallen through as she has had to rush back to the UK.

What we are looking for is someone to look after our cat for a couple of months, whilst we can get everything sorted at our new house and arrange her shipping to us.

We will supply all the food etc, just need a loving home that can take care of her and not let her outside. She is fully house trained ect and will go where you put the litter tray.

    Harper is 7months old Persian/Chinchila.

We are looking for someone to be able to care of her from tomorrow evening if possible.

If any one is willing to help please drop me a PM and I'll get straight back to you. We are based in Huay Kwang.

  2. Looking for a bit of advice, we are going to be relocating soon and would dearly like to take our cat with us. We already know the papers and vaccinations that we require for the country we are going to, our concern is the flight. We would be flying with Kuwait Airways as they allow pets, but when I spoke to the representative on the phone, she really didn't know a lot about it apart from that our cat would have to be transported in a cage and stowed in the cargo. Will the cargo area on the plane be temperature controlled, will she be left out in the sun whilst waiting to be loaded on the plane? Also where would we find a cage fit for the purpose and what would the cost of the cage be?

    Many thanks

  3. I'll tell you the easiest way to do it as "friend" was on a 2year overstay recently. Said "friend" done a visa run with a company that has a boss named Jack who likes to play Golf. It cost said "friend" 2100 for the 15day visa run, 20k for the fine, and 1k for a cup of tea with the officer in Cambodia. Said friend then went on his merry way through Bkk Airport without issues, and back in a few weeks later.

  4. Hi people, I'm wondering if anyone on here has contact details for a taxi driver that speaks English, knows Pattaya/Rayong that can be rented for the day to take my wife's boss to meetings.

Normally he uses a driver from Bangkok but they seem to get lost more often than not, so is now on the lookout for a cab driver that will come from Pattaya to Bangkok then back to Pattaya/Rayong for his meetings.

    Many thanks.

  7. You mention the Prius as being the best option but here is a few facts for you to think about;

This may or may not come as some shock to you, but many scientists are saying that Toyota's best-selling hybrid, the Prius, is actually bad for the environment. Some are even asserting that it has a worse impact on our world than the widely-hated Hummer.

With such universal concern (whether genuine or a desire to be "hip") to live a "greener" lifestyle, it's no surprise that this argument has become quite heated, though surprisingly quiet.

After all, if Toyota says that it's created a car that gets excellent gas mileage and is therefore better for the environment than other cars are, the consumer wants to believe this. So what are these new, conflicting reports?

Is the Prius or is it not good for the environment?

    The Beginning

The first I heard of any of this was in March 2007. My conservative Republican father snidely directed me to an article in Central Connecticut State University's school newspaper, The Recorder, that claimed that the Prius "outdoes" the Hummer in damage to the environment .

    What??

This is based on a CNW Marketing Research report called "Dust to Dust: The Energy Cost of New Vehicles From Concept to Disposal." But I thought the Prius was supposed to be great for the environment. It can get up to 60 miles per gallon of gas (though Toyota officials admit that most users will get more like 45 mpg on the highway).

As it turns out, burning gas is not the only (or even the major) factor in a car's impact on the environment. News to me!

    The Other Factors

Apparently, when considering how "good" (or bad) a car is for the environment, gas mileage is one of the last factors to weigh. It's actually the production of the car that matters. The raw materials' sources, the manufacturing effort, and the shipping costs all have an impact on the environment. And apparently, those of the Toyota Prius are not having a positive impact.

    The Numbers

The Prius' battery contains nickel, which is mined in Ontario Canada. The plant that smelts this nickel is apparently nicknamed "the Superstack" because of the amount of pollution it puts out; the area for miles around it is a wasteland because of acid rain and air pollution.

But the main problem that the "Dust to Dust" study has with the Prius' impact on the environment comes next.

That smelted nickel then has to travel (via container ship) to Europe to be refined, then to China to be made into "nickel foam," then to Japan for assembly, and finally to the United States. All this shipment for each tiny step in the production process costs a great deal, both in dollars and in pollution.

The study then concludes that -- all the production costs in mind -- the Prius costs about $3.25 per mile and is expected to last about 100,000 miles. The Hummer, on the other hand, with all the same factors counted, costs about $1.95 per mile and is expected to last about 300,000 miles.

    The Other Side

The Pacific Institute points out the holes in the argument of "Dust to Dust" quite eloquently, and to be quite honest, I'm not sure who to believe. They've written an entire article debunking the study.

They argue that the study bases its conclusions on "faulty methods of analysis, untenable assumptions, selective use and presentation of data, and a complete lack of peer review." As I'm not a scientist, I can't particularly argue against any of these things; I can only report both sides.

    More Math

An article in Wired's car blog Autopia covered this topic quite eloquently, concluding, "You might feel better driving a hybrid, but you won't necessarily be greener."

That's because each Prius consumes the equivalent of 1,000 gallons of fuel before its odometer clicks to 1. As we saw above, this is due to the manufacturing and shipping costs associated with the Prius. So while the Prius may not be worse for the environment than a Hummer is, it certainly would be given a run for its money when put head-to-head with a used car with reasonable fuel economy.

The Autopia article and the original article in Wired Magazine both agree that buying a used car that gets great gas mileage is the best option for having less of a negative impact on the environment. In fact, many cars receive up to 40 miles per gallon on the highway, which is almost as high as the Prius' 45 highway mpg, and those other cars aren't killing the environment quite as much in their manufacturing process.

    Let the Market Decide

Ultimately, new technologies will always come under all types of scrutinies. Hybrid automobile technology is no different, and surely scientists and marketing executives will continue to argue about this for years.

The moral of the story, to me, seems to be to do your research instead of listening to media hype. Don't believe at face-value the hype a company gives you when selling its product. Don't read just one article and let it change your decision to buy a car.

The market will decide whether or not the Prius and other hybrid vehicles help us feel better about our impact on the environment until we can unlock Hydrogen-powered vehicles (or a similarly efficient fuel).

  8. Does anybody know where to buy lengths of fabric off of a roll? I know you used to be able to buy it in Suan Luam Night Bazaar, but that has long since closed, and JJ market isnt any use as we couldn't find any vendors just selling fabric last weekend.

I'm looking for fabric similar to Paul Smith stripes or something else psychedelic to make some bean bag.

Second thing we are looking for is astro turf, a few people said to us JJ market but again all that could be found there was these little plastic tiles, that looked rubbish. We are after the astro turf you would buy on a roll.

    Thanks

  10. I must be missing something. How come people be so naive (stupid) as to invest in shares they don't know anything about via investment companies that they don't know anything about? That's beyond me! Only Greed? If so, I guess these "victims" asked for it!

You seen the movie Boiler Room? There's an education for ya! And sounds like you need one. 'How can people be so naive as to believe they've just won a huge amount of money on some lottery (via email), they never entered/deposit large sums of money into African bank accounts to 'release deceased's relative's inhetitance' etc ... blah blah. FYI There are a lot of incredibly stupid people around ...

Apart from the movie you quoted, everything else you mentioned has nothing to do with boiler rooms. Who's the naive one? What you're talking about is for another topic.

  11. Weren't a couple of the well known Irish pubs in BKK financed by the boiler room scams?

And fuelled by Columbian caffeine substitute.....

most boiler rooms operate out of condos.....the police milk them for all they worth.....

Not all out of condo's, I know of at least two, one on Thonglor and the other in Exchange Tower at Asoke

  12. In a word all you need is skype. I have a London phone number that I pay a small fee yearly to have from skype so that my family have a local number to call me on. I pay 7.99 a month and can call 40 countries unlimited including mobiles to most of them. I then have an internet sim in my phone with unlimited data so that skype runs 24/7, so that when I'm not at my computer calls go to my mobile as skype is installed on both.

The beauty of this system is that my bill is no more than the monthly subscription from skype and dtac which totals around 12 quid, I can call pretty much any country I want for as long as I want whilst on the move, and I'm always contactable by my family on a number that is not expensive for them.

I know there's numbers you can call from the uk to have 1p a min etc and cards available here in Thailand so that you can call, but nothing gives you the freedom like the system I have in place, and am really stumped as to why people even bother doing it any other way.
