I work in Bangkok and will stop working in the company that employs me on Thursday.
I'll have the work permit and extension of stay cancelled, and will apply for a 7-days extension of stay the same day.
I am going to work in another company located in Chiang Mai. I will apply for a new work permit and for a 1-year extension of stay there.
My concern is that the immigration usually asks to see the work permit while processing the 1-year extension and I am not entirely certain the work permit will be delivered within 7 days.
My questions are:
- Is 7 days enough?
- If not, would my application for the extension, sans work permit, be processed anyways (perhaps with showing some sort of work permit application proof)?
- If not, where is the best place to get a new non-immigrant B in the region? Vientiane?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks. Yes, labour office issues a slip called Bai Rap Tor Thor 10, which indicates cancellation. I'll show it to them and see what happens. I'll update this post with the result so it can be also useful to others...
Thanks for the cancellation form link too!

Ouch! Can I have the immigration forces the employer to issue that letter?

Hello,
I am about to leave my job in BKK. I'm on a visa non-B, 1-year extension of stay.
I just read that I need a letter from my employer to cancel the work permit, which is going to be an issue as we are not parting in good terms.
Last time I cancelled a work permit (earlier this year in Chiang Mai), I just showed up to the labour office, signed the Cancellation Document they provided me with and that was it.
So do I need a letter down here in BKK or not?
Thanks.

Thanks again Mario for your precious help!

OK. To cancel the work permit in person, do I need specific documentation; letter of resignation, letter from the company, tax document (por Ngor Dor 91)?
-
" 2. yes, you must cancel both your work permit and permission of stay on the last day of your employment."
Can this be done a bit earlier or exactly on the very last day?

Well, it turns out way too complicated for me to commute in between the 2 provinces. So I’ll only work with the new company.
The lawyer tells me that I'll have to resign from my current job, get to the immigration to cancel my extension of stay and then apply for a 7 days extension of stay. He'll then apply for my work permit.
I have 2 questions:
1) Can I apply for the work permit with the 7 days extension of stay, or would I have to get a new non-immigrant B?
2) Will I need to immediately cancel my current work permit or can this be done later.

Yes, get aproval from first employer and apply for a second WP in the other province.
No need to inform immigration.
Thanks much!

The employers are indeed located in two different provinces. So I should then get letter of approval from the current employer and get another work permit for the new job in the new province, right?
Do I need to notify the immigration when I apply for the new permit? Or only when I'll have to extend the stay?
Thanks again!

Hello,
I work in a company and hold a work permit. I am being offered to work in another company, which will issue me with another work permit.
I will work in both companies at the same time.
My questions are:
- Will I be able to hold the 2 permits at the same time?
- How would that work for the visa / length of stay? Would the second work permit be based on my current visa?
Thanks!

ah ok and thanks!

Thanks for your quick reply (and crgram for the PM reply). I am employed by a company in Thailand. I have a work permit, issued by the labor office, that is valid for 1 year, and the equivalent 1-year period of stay issued by the local immigration. I extend both every year, for a period of 1-year, at the local immigration and labor office. Is there any other way to do this?

You mention showing the work permit. But if you already have a work permit, shouldn't you just extend the period of stay at the immigration in Phuket? I'm not sure how this work. Could you possibly give me the link to the website you mentioned?
Thanks.

Yes and that's why I cannot really figure out the why of these new laws. Please enlighten me.
As regards to the house: "I have been wiring the rest of my salary into my account back home ever since I arrived here ... I have built MY house, with my name on the documents and all ..."
That is back home! Certainly not in a country where I cannot be legally the real owner of my house, not to mention with the risk of being deported for some of these incomprehensible reasons because I am only a guest.

I am not quite sure to fully understand the thinking behind these new immigration rules. Would a "rich" farang spend more than a teacher or a back pack? I am sure all the farangs living here with small incomes/pensions seriously contribute to the economy, do they?

I have been working here for 15 years, initially with a salary of USD 2,000 and now over USD4,000. I live upnorth in a THB3,000 small house and have been driving the same Honda dream, which I purchased second hand THB8,000 at the time - needless to say I need a new one! I eat inexpensive/delicious Thai food, barely buy anything, rarely make extras and, knocking on wood, I am never ill. Overall I happily live on less than THB10,000 and I have been wiring the rest of my salary into my account back home ever since I arrived here. There, among many other things, I regularly deposit for a cool retirement pension, support my family and can build MY house, with my name on the documents and all.
Financially speaking, am I a better farang than a teacher or an old poor chap simply living out of his pension?

Yes I was just reading about this. I think we'll have enough time to apply and get the WP3 Work Permit application.
Just in case, do other consulate request that letter of approval too?
