  1. Hmm, maybe you forgot to switch on the power to your wifi systems .....

I've designed and installed wifi systems back in Europe, and have got very good coverage throughout a complete office building without any repeaters at all. Just 1 very well positioned high power access point and high-gain antenna...

    Simon

(Actually my Masters degree and 15 years career was in the design of microwave comms equipments, signal propagation etc, so my wifi work was not just down to luck :o )

Did you notice how big the Emporium building is? No way you can cover that building with one AP.

  2. I wonder how many of the 2000 people executed without trial for being "drug dealers" got this kind of attention. How many of them had just pissed off the wrong mentally unstable officer? I'm not saying that this case don't deserve the attention, just sad that the value of human lives seems to be so different...

  3. It would be good to get coverage throughout The Emporium, but I will need q bit of power/antenna gain. I can mount an external antenna, but it will not be in an ideal position. Does anyone know of wifi equipment suppliers in BKK? (The only contacts I can find seem only to supply weedy little laptop wifi cards...)

You'd need more than just a good antenna for that. Start off with a ton of access points and repeaters on every floor.

  4. I don't know about UK law but Thailand allows him to have dual citizenship. Take a look at the birth certificate and he is already listed as a Thai citizen with ID number and everything. Bring the birth certificate to your wife's amphur and get him registered in the housepaper (tabien baan). You can then go to the passport authority and get a thai PP.

  5. Somewhat incorrect. PCs with certain Pantip Plaza versions of XP won't boot after installing SP2. Actually, they will boot and immediately re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot and re-boot.....

  6. Everything you need is available in BKK, but some 'farang baby' things are cheaper in the west (baby carts, certain brands of bottles, car seats etc) have an uptick in TH as most Thais don't buy that kind of stuff.

Also, most baby car seats available in TH have 5 point belts while all baby car seats sold in the US are required to have 6 point belts.

  7. Or can any of you guys suggest a good hotel to stay in near town. We are able to spend upto 1600 Baht

Unless you have a specific reason to stay in town, don't.

There are lots of nice resorts along the rivers out on the countryside. Pung Waan is one that springs to mind. Kanchanaburi town is not much to see but the countryside is very nice. Or rent a raft in the Sai Yok national park and sleep on the river. A very nice experience.

As someone mentioned, there are guesthouses that may be a better choice than the hotels in Kanchanaburi as hotel stars have a slightly different meaning there than elsewhere. One popular guesthouse in town is "Jolly Frog".

  8. As far as having children goes, i am too old for that now, i believe that a man should grow up with his children, if i was to father a child at 65 they would be left without a father whilst very young as I will die soon.

65 is not too old. Besides, having children around you will probably give you a few extra years.

  9. A follow-up:

Mother in law kept complaining at the post office every time something was lost. Nothing changed and they always tried to blame BKK, the mail driver (from BKK to the town) etc.

We sent a couple of "1 million dollar bills" which of course also got lost.

Finally she wrote a letter to some radio station and the radio station investigated. Result: all staff in the post office was replaced after a couple of days. Now we'll send a new batch of "1 million dollar bills" to see if it will work any better.

  10. And to harpman88: I think the law was changed around last October/November. I certainly am getting no interest now from the Thai Military Bank. Other members are reporting that they still do get interest, but I don't know what banks they are with. I still think this is a very unfair law - and I don't know the reason for it. :o

I doubt it is law. Maybe something a couple of banks came up with on their own. Or maybe just for 'tourist' accounts with no tax id no on file...? I still get interest on my Bank of Asia account...

    30/06/2004 INTEREST EARNED

  11. Seriously, don't worry so much about it. Just like other vehicles, aeroplanes sometimes have engine difficulties - it is EXTREMELY unlikely that the same thing will happen to a United Airlines flight again any time soon, or to any other airline for that matter.

At least if they are not serviced by the same mechanics that serviced the plane that shortly after service became Swissair flight #111. :o

I wonder where it was last serviced...

  12. Has anyone here done it?

What do you need to know before you can become a novice? I speak and understand normal 'everyday' Thai OK but I can't speak 'monk language'. Do I need to learn that first?

Can anyone recommend any good online resources? (Preferrably in English because I'm awfully slow at reading Thai). (Not in TH at the moment but planning to become a novice for a week or a few when we move back to TH)
