Kaiskorn is "okay", but sometimes you just have to wonder...I tried to deposit (not get any cash back, had passbook) a tax return check from Guam (USA) at Changklan branch (near my home), and they told me I had to go to branch (Central airport mall) where I opened account. Really? To deposit a check into my Kasikorn account? So, off I ride to Central mall, only a few minutes away...take a number, get called to teller...she tells me there will be 30 day hold, I say no problem...she deposits the funds...then a supervisor comes by, they talk, she tells me I "have to come back the next day, as it is too late in the day to accept the deposit"... Huh? Oh yeah, and a 500 baht fee to deposit at my branch????

I ask her: what will change tomorrow morning that can't be done today? I have already stated a 30 day hold is no probelm...who knows....no use trying to reason, just smile and come back in morning...

But mostly, Changklan branch staff is quite pleasant and helpful and using my debit card works worldwide...only time declined was on a US military base hotel in Japan....even withdrawing funds worldwide...

Be sure you know how to countersteer a bike.

It is not in fact something you learn to do because anyone who rides a two wheel vehicle does it already.

They just don't KNOW they are doing it.

Understanding it by hearing it explained can save your life though. Because in a split second decision your brain

will KNOW it & not be over ridden by fear & the reflex to turn left for instance to go left.

To sum it up simply it is this.

On a two wheel vehicle you push the bar forward for the direction you want to turn to.

Not pull as your mind would think.

Meaning to go right you push the right bar away from you.

Your mind would think immediately no that cannot be because if I push the right bar forward I am turning left.

But on a two wheel vehicle that is what initiates the right turn.

It is basically causing the bike to fall into a right turn.

Anyway

The best advice I can give is go out tomorrow to a nice parking lot or empty area & try it. See & prove it to your mind.

Go 5-10 miles an hour & gently push the right handlebar forward. You will have initiated a right turn.

Now push the left bar forward & you will initiate a left turn.

After all bikes are not steered by turning left or right at all. Except for when going very very very slowly.

You turn a bike by initiated a turn via counter steering then you lean the bike to complete/continue the turn

while the wheel is actually pointing straight ahead.

Most folks already know how to ride & do it instinctively, They have to as it is the only way to

turn a bike going above 1 mile an hour.

But KNOWING this in your mind can save you in an emergency reflex situation.

Absolutely correct. Hardest thing is to teach a closed mind, however. In Thailand or anywhere. I've also noticed that most Thai motosi drivers are very fine operators.

I think most bikers use their body and shifting of the weight to begin a turn; not turning the bars which is done only by beginners.

Idiot. Only ignorant riders don't know countersteering. Going right? Lean right, push handlebar with right hand, or pull with left. You don't know that??? Whose the "beginner?"

Hi Jeff, I'd be interested in directions to this shop, want to eliminate the stock under seat exhaust (cooks my fanny in traffic!) and mount the new Multi side exhaust cans...keeping the catalytic converter as is. Need to fab very short pipe from cc to a 1into2 and mount the cans.

I'll take the Diavel if I had to replace my MS.

I saw a Ducati in Chiang Mai last night and it needed to go to the shop. Making hell of a noise that sounded like a chain was coming apart and that was setting still

Was it a 2006 black Multistrada DS 1000. with a rider wearing big grin on top of the bike you'll never catch?

I was buying from a local Chiangmai silversmith that melted the ingots and stamped it same as you...but then they got flakey and started overcharging. I imagine, I cannot say 100%, that with the dozens and dozens of silversmiths in Chiangmai, that if I could speak Thai, I could find other silversmiths that would do same.

But I am very interested in contacting you, discussing purchasing the 500 Gram bars, and possibly other business.

Now it is 6 months later...and they hang up when I call....after telling me last month (January, 2011) to send a FOURTH Immigration form so they "could get green book for me."

I'll "receive green book sure"......sure I will. They won't even return my paperwork and refuse to take my call.

Hey nonghoidave, I wish you all the best to get your money and the papers back, but why did you pay such a lot money in advance.

I know a few people, who can make greenbooks for others, but as I know, you have to pay them only step by step.

Because that was the fee stated in advertisement here at ThaiVisa, so I ignorantly thought it legit. Two others answered the ad: they both got their green books.

I haven't asked for any refund of my money, only paperwork. I have someone here that will get green book for me, but he must have the Automotive testing paperwork (they sent me only a copy of the receipt, not the actual certificate) to perform obtaining it.

I like to remind you, that you can t run any legal claims against them. You know the country, the rules and how bike import proceedings "normally" work. You were trying to obtain a green book by obvious illegal means, and it failed. Don t blame anyone but yourself.

I do not see any thing illegal using an agent to do the work. especially in a country were you do not speak the language and pretty much every LTD have different rules to follow. Sure he got scammed BUT if the paperwork was in order then nothing illegal..

Also i actually do not know many people who know the rules of big bike importing thats why many use agents (including some shops)

agreed, handing over 131k baht and bike for testing seems all legal to me, and I would consider a law suit to get docs and funds back if OP has proper paperwork on who he dealt with(not spoke with). Official reciepts, copy ID card, business ID numbers and VAT numbers.

I have email (September 2010) from one of the owners with all the paperwork (Automotive Testing Institute, Excise tax, receipts,etc) in attachments. I have the receipt she gave me when they picked up bike, and email receipt for the extra charge for testing of 21,000. I can not read Thai, but I asked a woman here that speaks perfect English (Master's from a university in London) if Excise and Automotive Testing paperwork, etc. looked official in her opinion. She said "Yes, very official." For my bike, in my name.

I do not know what they want, or are doing. The bike was already here in Rayong, a Thai cop had owned it and drove it. I bought it from his wife.

I did not avoid any import tax, I paid all taxes asked of me, I did not ask for any "shortcuts or deals" and I bought it only after seeing the advertisement here at ThaiVisa for obtaining legal green book.

Tell me where I went wrong...other than answering an advertisement right here?

Friend of mine just won a lawsuit against some people who tried to scam him, got all his money back. So justice is absolutely possible in thailand.

The theft ?? Well its a deal gone bad.. And lets face it that happens in Thailand a great deal over fixing books.

The fact (if true and from info I heard) the guy got cancer and has left to try to treat it / stay alive kind of makes 'theft' a touch strong. I would say I would have other priorities than following through with a Thai paper chase if I was told I had cancer too. Sure the customer would expect a refund, but the money was probably spent by then and the process started.

Bad luck yes, poor support for the service yes.. But I dont see this as his pocketing the money and running off, more just a deal gone wrong and poor timing. If Thailand didnt have such stupid systems so full of holes none of this would be happening.

He gave me the contact numbers of the people in Bangkok that own the motorcycle shop that ThaiVisa wishes to protect and not it's readers, that picked up my motorcycle in Chiangmai, as the ones to complete deal. I have emails from the woman owner as late as September 2010 assuring me the paperwork was on it's way.

It's not illegal, heck the guy was trying to 'legalized' his bike by getting a green book (that's my understanding), his problem is that he trusted the wrong guy. Not to smack TV listing, but I would rather talk to friends and people I know to make connections. That way, there are some responsibility to the people involve. Friends don't cheat friends (too much ) or at least they won't run off with the money.

The guy is pretty much SOL in this one I believe.

So, now the update, that man at the motorcycle shop that defrauded me after I answered an advertisement here at ThaiVisa, told my attorney January 29 to send new Immigration paperwork, and Green book would be here in a month or so.

I did. Now he will not answer my attorney's calls.

Happy that you find it necessary to assist the crooks defrauding folks using ThaiVisa ads, Katabeachbum.

Anyone normal and fair wanting to be advised of the crooks to avoid in the biker world should send me private message, I'll be more than happy to name the shop and the people involved.

A fellow named mark in Bangkok offered the service: have the bike for testing for 7 days then returned, the Green Book in two months.

Finally got my bike back in June of 2010 (gone six months)...but no Green Book, no paperwork.

he tells me in march of 2010 he is "dying of cancer" and "leaving Thailand" and gives me texas phone number to contact him. Tells me "his secretary" will obtain Green Book for me.

His secretary and her husband were the ones that picked up my bike for testing. Nok and Cha, the owners of ............

As late as September 2010 she was assuring me "Green Book soon." Now? When I call to ask where my Green Book is, where my paperwork is? They just hang up, then don't answer my calls. ................. shop in Bangkok: use your own discretion doing business with them. Of course, I have email trail to prove everything I am asserting, believe it.

January 21, 2011, I receive call on my mobile from "Unknown": silence....then a voice saying "oh, sorry, my secretary called the wrong number" then hangs up.

In Chiang Mai taking the Thai licence could not be easier. A couple of quick tests to check your peripheral/colour vision and reaction times and then 30 questions on a computer of which you have to get 23 correct and a short practical around their own course. Ride about 10m on a 6 inch wide slightly raised rail and ride in and out of a few cones. You have to bring your own bike though. Say what you like but at least they are more than willing to change the language of the computer just for you. As has already been said you also get cheaper entry into parks and forests. It is not worth the hassle, go get a license, the local Police understand the local license better, they will usually smile and wave you on your way. Though I have to admit, in Issan they sometimes stare in wonderment. The car license is much the same deal.

Yep. Same thing I experienced. Except I did rent a bike to perform the test from the food vendor next to the track: 50 baht. With a half-flat front tire that kept squirming on the rail, yikes ;<) I'd never ridden a bike smaller than a 1968 Suzuki 250, and that was back when I was 14 ('69).....the test was like riding a toy. Honda 50 or something, not new for sure. Grabbed the handlebars and give a slight turn? Front tire didn't move, sidewalls just kind of "gave" a little bit, hahaha. Tire too flat. I told the bike owner and the DMV tester " I am Farang: too Pom Pui, make tire flat", they laughed, I laughed, no one lost face: I passed.

But as you say, easy and no excuse not to do. I think less than two hours, maybe a few minutes more, I had both licenses, no hassles at all.

I'll be picking up my Ducati (I hope, it's been since December!) soon in Bangkok, and will be looking to ride it back if I don't use Thai Postal to ship it to Chiangmai. Much cheaper to ship than ride, but no fun in that!

I'd offer to ride with ya...but I will still be awaiting the paperwork. Just paid the Excise tax on it last week (ouch, bohica baby!), last stage awaiting paperwork from government before it finally is legal to ride.

I'm curious what is the best and safest route, which the most scenic, etc. I'm an old fart: I only go fast when I can see where I am going to stop and am sure I can do so. ;<)

Riding back in tourist van from visa run to Mae Sae yesterday, we were on a sweeping right hand turn, in slow lane, when from around blind corner comes two vehicles the other direction...with one of them completely in the passing lane in our direction, completely over the yellow line.

I took it as a timely reminder.
