  1. 25m thb is a large sum of cash almost no matter where you live in the world. Sure it might not be for london or new york, but pattaya is far from either of them. pattaya's not much more than a small sleezy beachtown with poor infrastructure, high crime and some shopping malls.

I'm not saying it's not a nice place to live, and there are much more expensive apartments around, I've seen some as high as 60m, But it would seem money is tighter for the time being and people are taking less risks on investments.

  2. you can get gprs cards from tukcom, 3-4 different providers, you can also pick up another type of card from the 3 store or whatever it's called about 30 meters from tukcom. 1kthb a month unlimited data.

don't know about the speeds though. gprs is slow as expected, but i'm unsure if there's 3G access anywhere.

might be worth looking into the True network, they are installing 8mbit (i think) wireless towers around the place. cant find a website on it for you atm - but its there somewhere, i've seen it before.

3bb is adsl - across a phone line - you just dont need a phone number. (trust me on this, i have it). 2 weeks to get installed + 12 month contract. so dont bother for a 3 month stay.

there's plenty of wifi hot spots around, if i was you i'd drive around with my laptop open trying to find one with good speeds then find a room near it.

pick yourself up a cantenna (not an antenna) for a better signal, antennas are more for sending, cantenna's do better on the receiving end of a signal

    http://www.cantenna.com/

don't know if you can buy them locally, but if your moving in a month, you have time to wait on the postage (usually about 2 weeks from the US). they aren't expensive.

  3. i'm more shocked and appalled that the OP was shocked and appalled.

Phew. We agree on something then - the disgusted bit?

Yeah, disgusted as usual, just walk past and shake my head now days the shock and awe of it all has worn off.

  4. ....

I always wonder how government officials (e.g. police) can drive brand new cars and live in upper class houses.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I asked my Thai wife; response : "family very rich" :)

mmmm everyone jumps to the corruption conclusion, and sure that's probably a factor, but i know a couple of local bib's and they drive cars like fortuners, bmw's and what not.

but being a bib they work their way up the ranks to higher pay grades and have a fair bit of free time. the few i know all have enough free time off work (and during) to run side businesses (air con sales/install) and what not.

few guys on the ground who run around doing the work, they just advertise, take the calls, do the over the phone / onsite quick and easy sales stuff and call their cheap staff in to do the work.

no different to any other country, i know fire fighters back home who do 2 weeks on 2 weeks off, they don't make great money as a firefighter, but they have lots of time to run a business as well and they are VERY well off, with their livable base income from their main job they can risk more with the business and reap the rewards.

  5. The majority of tracks in Australia run ONLY two stroke carts 100cc yamaha J and S, and 125cc IAME / Rotax... chassis vary from the cheapish sq chinese to sodikart rental chassis with the 125 bolted on (same as bira).

one thing i miss about australia, proper tracks and karts everywhere, none of this tourist 4 stroke stuff.

some of the tracks also allow you to rent race spec karts, properly tuned as well - but you need to set consistent lap times to qualify and also pay a much higher rate.

    good times.

i'm no fan of the theppresit track, right left right left right left right straight. too short and boring, bira's nice, some hairpins, chicanes, wide long turns, S bends, and varying track layouts. nice change of pace. one of the few things i say thailand has built right.

  6. track at the end of walking street isnt on gmaps yet. but its there.

there's bira out by the highway, that's a full circuit and kart track. very nice kart track.

Thepprasit used to have a track right on the main road which is now shophouses, in a bit from Thepprasit there's a couple of very small tracks not worth using.

there's another next to mini siam / maccas on sukhumvit, small average track, with some quite old karts that need better maintenance.

that's about all the main kart tracks i know of, there's HEAPS of dirt tracks (circuits) around that aren't anything official. just some thai's with trail bikes having some fun.

  7. Just curious if this complex has a sprinkler system.....many older or lower end condo buildings do not. I rented a condo at Yensabai Condo last summer and didn't realize it had no sprinkler system. I personally would never own or invest in a condo building lacking in this safety necessity.

Considering that you rent in VT5 which does have a sprinkler system, how do you know that it actually works?

About 18 months ago a fire broke out in the office of VT5C as i was walking past in the lobby at 7pm the flames were over 6 feet high! The sprinklers didn't come on, the office was locked the fire alarm & smoke alarms didn't work and the security gaurds were running around like frightened chickens.

I shouted at them to call the fire brigade and they didn't know the number!

I told them to roll out the hydrant hose and they couldn't open the door as it was locked!

I had to force the hydrant door open for them with a scewdriver and help them use it as they were too scared to even break the office window to access the flames with the hydrant hose.

Make your own conclusion as to what would happen if there ever was a fire in the VT5 C&D Buildings.

Not all is at it shows when it comes down to fire safety as not everything is in working order. TIT.

Oh and for the record the smoke alarms still don't work even today, who knows whether the alarm and sprinklers work?

There's never any fire drills or checks carried out.

Yeah i lived in VT5C when that happened, i wondered why the sprinklers didn't come on as well, i also remember not long after that during one of the many power outages the backup generator exploded (day long outage)... walking up to the 18th floor is not fun.

from recollection the alarm didn't go off, but from the 18th floor we could smell the fire and were worried there was a fire in the building, came downstairs to look around a bit and found the office smoldering. someone said it was from the lighting storm or something? forget now.

on the upside VT5C did have 2 large (very wide) stair cases for everyone to get downstairs through. slightly reassuring.

there's always pros and cons with living anywhere in Thailand, each to their own, as long as you can afford it and it makes you happy live where ever you want.
